If you are going to do it, do it properly. After you cut that roof off, ALOT of the structural support is gone. This guy did it to his corvette and had an accident. The Front end of the car bent and the front dash crushed his legs.

Just have search on google on convertables conversions. I have seen an add in the yellow pages and they do it for around $2k i think.

I would imagine you would need to get an engineers certificate for that sort of major structural work, don't forget you are removing a significant part of a vehicle, one that provides a degree of safety... some other things may need to be strengthened or added to replace that functionality, as if you rolled, your windscreen would probably fold in a flash as is, and you might find the part of your anatomy that made the decision to do it is no longer attached to your body!

First port of call I would recommend is asking your insurance company what the damage will be to your premiums, if you can even do it at all. And then find out about how to acquire an engineers certificate... My guess is your states Road Traffic Authority as a starting point.

Instead of asking how to do it at this stage, maybe find out all the things that may affect you financially if you do decide to do it...

Listen to your father ;)

According to your profile you are around 15 years of age?

First wait till you have your licence and have a car (if you don't already) learn how to drive it, figure out if it is the car you want to do up then you can do it if you really want to. I personally think doing it right now is nuts, thinking about it is certainly ok though.

I think you might be under estimating the amount of money involved... more than the car is probably worth anyway. I have seen crazier things done tho.

but yeah I will raise you $50 Tim lol ;)

lol

And have you put any thought into what you'll do when it rains? How will you construct a softop to go over it? This will set you back a few grand to have custom made.

Never been in a convertible, Timmy?

If you drive fast enough (> 60km/h), you won't get wet.

(ok ok, stopping at traffic lights might be a problem)

Nice Merc Timmy. Love those big classics!

Dad had a 190SL, pagoda 230SL & 280SLC... and a few 4-door saloons.
Those were all built like tanks - nothing like the tinny crap in the MB showrooms now.

...i can get a magna for like $50
Is that a Question or a Statement?

Q: must be a few TMs around these days asking to be "taken away" for free or therabouts.
If you can drive it probably $200 might get you one without much looking, no RWC.

S: good! Low resale values help you a lot. :P

Y'know, I'd be real interested to see any 1st gen bodyshell with the roof lopped off.

Not the stiffest shell around - Do you reckon the doors will still close properly?!

wasn't talking of a photochop.

Knowing how floppy a TN's shell is (hehe, mine saw quite a bit of "air"),
a wagon's shell needs the roof even more - those roof creases aren't just for show.

Chop that off and the base would be floppier than a carpet.

roof creases?
any car is floppy with its roof off. my sigma needed its doors welded to the body just to stop the middle twisting. the ass end can still lift and the car run on 3 wheels if u take a corner sideways enough.
ive posted this so often, but always fit the thread
