I have been reading up on DC - DC step up converters because I want build my own car amps, like I do for my home audio equipment... thing is, there's not much out there (it seems) for kits and things to build a psu from a 12 volt souce for a power amp.

Is there any electronic engineers out there that can help.

Other thing is; I've done (well... looked up  ) some figures on the amount of amps a DC - DC coversion is gonna pull from the car battery for the supply rails of a 50W power amp, it comes out over 21A. So I thought it might be a good idea to chuck some dry cell backup batteries in the boot to run the audio gear, so I can run short cables to the psu's. Should I do this. If so does n e one know where to get the batteries.

I intend to have 4 50W (RMS) amp modules and 1 100W (RMS) module. No prize for guessing what's gonna plug in where.

If you do end up doing this, keep them away from the amps themselves. The DC-DC converters put out a lot of interference.

I would stick to car audio gear though.

Dry cells -> look for Optima or odyssey, ul also need a suitable charging system to charge one battery at a time so it wont kill ur altenator.

What supply rails do you need for the amp modules? +/-?Volts @ ?Amps
It's not gonna be cheap...
Is your reasoning behind the DIY SQL or Cost?

Not too hard to build these.

Here is a good jumping off point...

I have built this one myself, it works quite well.

It looks like these would be ideal, thanks.

Why am I doing this? Purely for fun. And it will make my car "me". I just like doing and learning. Cars are a money spong n e way.

Go make some tube amps.... Mmm..

Show us pics of any progress too... Sounds like a fun little project.

Good link there Heath!

As good a reason as any!

The valve amp would be good in winter! No need to turn the heater on :)
