Alrighty,

well about 2 weeks ago, my transmission on my TE died. Got it towed and replaced within the next few days with a second hand one that had done about 120 000kms. Came with a 3mth warrenty for about 970$. Paid an additional 300$ for the 6hr of labour. i drive it out of the lot.. all fine. was a very happy chappy.

however..

about 2 block away, it chugged slightly, and had a bit of a clunk going down to first.. im like.. grrrr, ill see how i go. All went well that night. However, next morning, mum moved by car by reversing out of the driveway, but couldnt go forward. I wake up, mum tells me, so i go thrash her around the block 20 times, trying every combo etc, was 100% fine, even better than the old trans. I pull off to the side of the rd on the phone for 5mins, in Park and with handbrake up, motor stil lrunnning, and when i went to pull out, she wouldnt get first. Huge screeching noise (as in stuck in neutral and foot to floor) . Turned ignition off. Sat there going .. **** **** ****. Restarted the engine, and she went normal. She went fine for a few days, but then, she started doing this sparadically, even when reguarly driving, she would jerk and screech at diff spots, such as 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and even down gears. Throw in a few really jerky clunks when i park the car.

Anyway, the other day, i had had enough (i had previously been stuck when i went to move out of a carwash), and the other morning i went to rush off to uni for an exam, and she was stuck in 1st. Couldnt go into second. I tried sitting in D, and changing from L to 2.. but she was stuck good. Even after turning engine on /off a few times, no fix. I started out going to m mehcnic in 1st gear (on main roads.... god it was terrible), but stopped off for fuel for 2 seconds. Went to pull out of petrol station and she went fine. FFS! Went to the mechnic, he took her round and tested her out, and of course, she behaved herself, and no problems.

Driving to work today... i would stop at a red light, then when it went green, i went to put my foot down, and screech. turned engine off then on again, and put foot down, she would screech, tyres woudl do a little burn out and she would fly off. I work in parra, and did this about 10 times on the way to work!!. Almost got re-ended about 5 times etc etc . Each time im lucky she started when i turned the engine on.

BTW.. the people that sold me my recent transmission are currently in the process of trying to find me another (hence why its been about a week since i told them to replace it). However, along with that replacment will come another slug of labour $$. So basically, ive been thinking... of the following that could be alternates to be wrong. (what are the odds and perfectly good 2nd hand trans would have the same problems as before).

1) Transmission Oil (this was oriinally checked when my first trans died and it was fine). But i dont know if it was replaced/flushed when they put the new one in. Is the transmission oil kept sepeeratly outside the transmission itself?
2) Transmission Filter?
3) ECU? ( i was also told transmission ecu by a mate could be a problelm, but is this in the tranny uni, or the main ecu?) BTW, my mehcnic plugged my car into the special computter thingie, and showed me all OK.
4) luck has it, that its the trans unit itself thats gone.

Basically, i just dont want to forking out more time and money for reinstallation of a unit if it could be one of the things ive mentioned above, or something else??

sorry for the long story, just needed to explain the varying times that the problem happens. More and more frequent now, and going to visit my mechanic tomorrow, and ask him to do a transmission oil/filter replacment (but again thats $$$). BTW, i had my original transmission fluid replaced about 1mth ago.

thanks for any help guys

(btw... sometimes when im crusing along at about 50, foot of the accelerater, no brake, she feels like an elastic band, that is normal, but then she tries to drop but hesitates, and this will happen about 5 times in a row, all within the one gear).

edit* hahahhaha that was long :d

There shouldnt be any labour charge.. Its the mechanics problem.. it has a 3 month warranty.. there should be no labour charges.. i would ring fair trading and double check for ur own sake but im 99% its all at there cost..

Tell them to search harder.. they should be able to find a box for u in half and hour and a few phone calls..

Tell them to ring GMS dismantlers in revsby.. they have a sheet load of magna there.

Good luck.. :D

nah, it was brought from elsewhere. It is the suppliers problem.

its like if i brought a muffler to a muffler place to install, it would cost me $$, and if i found out the muffler was made of jello and not stainless steel, its my problem, not the fitter.

i actually did ring fair trading about this the other day. I am hoping to get my full $$ back when they fail to supply me with a new 2nd hand one within a respectable timeframe.

any other ideas of what the problem could be outside the transmission box?
