I just installed my amp kit and hooked up my stereo along with the Alpine EQ (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21567) and it sounds bloody awsome!
I only have a pair of old Kenwood 6x9's atm (yes i know) but damn! the EQ made them actually nice to listen too. I turned the EQ off from the button and i cant beliebe how ****ty it sounds without it lol.
The only problem with the EQ is that the sliders are really short but i can live with it :) I havent installed my splits and subs yet i just cbf for some reason (its been 2 months since i bought the EQ and just installed it now  )
Here is a pic of it installed. I know it looks dodgey but i just wanted to get it in. Maybe later on ill get some fibreglass and make it look stock.

PS. dont laugh at the cord thing i thought it would have looked better.

Doesn't look too bad..
Just becareful what setting you have on it as a Bad eq setting will make a Great system sound crap..
Set your Head unit to Flat, or EQ off and just use the External EQ to do your settings untill it sounds good...

And an EQ is not just a way to boost up ur bass. If you want to use it for its real purpose you should try and get ur car onto an RTA. The EQ is there to overcome the problems associated with a different acoustical environment to the recording studio.
If you get ur car onto an RTA (at most car audio stores) u can get a graph of the frequency response of ur car. You will see major boosts around the resonant frequency and also areas of high response around areas our ears are most sensitive to.
Tune these out, (preferably cutting the frequencies, instead of boosting them)
Good stuff!

A properly designed + installed system doesn't require an EQ, IMHO all they are good for is to impress people who don't know anything about car audio, or if you want to give your music a vinyl sound :D

It depends what you are after. There is no way to get a flat response without an EQ in the car environment. The car itself will naturally boost around its resonant frequency 200-300 hz. Then you have to take into account reflections of glass, other passengers blocking speakers, crossover points between subs and mid and mid and tweet. All these make it hard to reproduce a flat response.
Especially in competition, lots of people have 32 band parametric eq's and Ive seen a few 128 band parametric EQ's just to iron out the little peaks and troughs that the car and speakers introduce.
Parametric EQ's are just those that enable full modification of the frequency, -> Ability to select any frequency with any width (q) and any db cut.
Graphic equalisers are like Gemini has here have set width and frequencies but allow db cut/boost.
Peace

mm yeah but i dont like only having bass and trble to stuff aorund with. I have always had a thing for EQ's. I just wanted to hear what it would sound like just with the bass so thats why its set like that in the pic.
IMO, an EQ is good for people that cant afford the best brands and new stuff but still want it to sound like it is a good quality system.
Also, The MAIN reason i bought this thing is because not only is it an equalizer, but it also has rca outputs for the front speakers, rear speakers and a sub including faders. You dont know how happy i am to be able to fade my sub in and out and to be able to turn it off with a button press!!

Sounds like a better reason! You need sub control :)

I also have an ALPINE EQ like that but a few years older.
I had it installed in my first car and boy did it rock.
This particular EQ is known as a PASSIVE EQ. So basically if your head unit only has 2xRCA outputs on it and no sub control this EQ does it for you. It has Front, Rear, and Sub channels(outputs RCA at the rear) so that you can run it directly to your amps.
Cheers
