View Full Version : Help! Front swaybar removal
I realise I've also posted this in the 2nd gen section, but I can't really use my car atm because I can't figure out how to remove the front swaybar after unbolting it.
Do you need to take off all the stuff thats runs underneath (lower control arms, engine bay beam things, gearbox support, exhaust pipe)? I don't know whether I should stuff around with these sorts of components.

How come you're taking it off? Are you swapping it for another one?

Yes you do, the exaust should be unbolted, the cross member unbolted and so on, it not hard but isn't easy either.
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer.
The cross members don't look like heaps of trouble (easy access and clean 14mm bolts), the exhaust might be a PITA (rusty bolts and crappy access), but what about the control arms? They look like they'll be in the way and they have big 17 mm (I think) bolts that are probably tightened to 10,000,000 Nm ;) I only have a 3/8" drive rachet and I don't have spring compressors (for taking the control arm off). Will I be able to do this job?
Last Friday I was trying to take off a 17 mm bolt on the right strut and I ended up bending the ratchet :)
Also, will anything fall and kill me when I undo these things? :)
Redav, I'm installing a Whiteline swaybar. I've already done the rear and installed the front camber bolts.

Cool. Let us know how you go and what you saw as a result. It's something I'll be looking at one year.

If I remember rightly yes the conrol arms need undoing, my work did the job as I didn't have all the tools either. It's not hard though if you have all the tools. The bars make a nice difference too. Well worth it

What's the increase in size from the stock bar to the Whiteline? How much are they worth again?
What's involved in fitting a rear sway bar? Once again I presume it's worth the effort? I think the VR-X and Sports have them fitted.

Both bars are a increase of 2mm, or around a 47% increase in roll stiffness, not sure of recommended retail as I got mine dealer cost but I think they are around the 150 mark retail. There are two different bars for the rear, those that have a factory fitted and those that don't, mine was a direct replacement and so a snack to fit
Actually the rear bar (none present normally on my car) was easier to install than the front one is to replace. In my case it is the same diameter but solid instead of hollow. They were both $156 from memory and the newer Magna bars should be the same.
Tomorrow I have to go buy a long extension bar and deep 19 mm socket just to remove the damn exhaust pipe that joins both exhaust manifolds.
This is a real PITA. Pedders said it might be around $250 to install the front swaybar. I'd rather spend that money on some 3/4" drive sockets and a ratchet.

Good point. Plus you can say you did it yourself, it's fun and you learn new things.
Is it just a case of bolting the bars in? Or is it a bit more involved than that?
Someone shoot me.
All up I've spent about 16 hours stuffing around with the stock front swaybar. It's off now. But I've found that it's 22 mm vs the 20 mm Whiteline one. In other words, the replacement whiteline one is the same stiffness or even softer.
Either Veradas got fitted with larger swaybars, or V6 TS/TR Magnas/Veradas have bigger bars and Whiteline worked on a 4 cyl Magna.
Who can turn back time for me? :)
