Hey guys

I've been using Shell Optimax for the past month and my fuel consumption has been poor -

380km/tank before the warning light comes on. I had used 53L by then. The magna book

claims that we've got a 71L tank.

The thing is that i have a tendancy to use the entire fuel tank before i fill up( only about 5l

remaining).

My friend(got a Magna as well) said this is not good as there is an accumulation of dirt at

the bottom of the tank and that could damge my pump and filter!!

Just wondering if u guys know anything about this and what sort of consumption do you get.

I have a manual TE V6.

Also, how mush does a fuel filter cost + installation? Is there any specific brand i should look out for.

I can vouch for vortex. I've been getting 550-580 out of 65L and I try to only use vortex. Seems to work because before caltex, when I used BP or shell, I was only getting 500...
Might be a coincidence or change in driving habits but I'm happy with that kind of milage

No best for me is BP 98 Ultimate, 1 full tank =620+ km (TJ auto) but Optimax is crap maybe 520 km

3rd gen Magna?

Your car will already have a factory fuel filter, should be located near the tank.
Need to get under your car to access it, go check workshop manual.

Bought a RYCO # Z528 some mths ago - been too busy lately to install.
Not sure if its same for sedan/wagon; think it was about $20-30.

Not very big, Size about can of Coke. (smaller than 1st gen's!! )

I think you'll find that the differences on fuel consumption are more to do with what type of driving and what driving style you use rather than the type of fuel.

REV937, I find it very hard to believe that just by using a different type of fuel you get an extra 100ks out of a tank....if you think about it, from a physics and chemistry point of view, the magna engine should'nt really derive any benefit from premium unleaded petrol as its not tuned to take advantage of it in any case

Ego, you dont count as your haltech improved your fuel economy heaps if I recall correctly? was'nt it like nearly 20% or something like that???

You wont get anything out of ur car running it on Premium unless its tuned for it..
So if its not tuned to run on 98ron its pointless using it.... :D

Thanks.. Save the few cents per litre up and after a few years u can buy a piggyback and tune it for 98ron.. :D

I think at the moment, I'm more interested in an LPG conversion...dont even know if its possible in a magna...but might be worth it if petrol keeps going up like it is :doubt:

EGO ,I couldn’t believe it too, but I done little over 620km, Also agree with some of you ,that using Optimax I can’t see any benefit.

I just drove 2500km this week, lots of highway, and with the fuel prices I ran regular all the way. First tank I got 664km to 62litres, and all tanks thereafter I got 350+km to half a tank. Worst was 340km to half a tank. I cant see any probs with regular! I once used BP Ultimate and found this fuel sh@#t, maybe a bad batch, but I drove all highway and only got 550km to a full tank, nearly dry. I say regular is the go, i cant justify paying 10c per litre more for a naturally aspirated engine..

For the Price of these higher ron fuels... you would expect more milage ( i would )

considering how much these fuels are....i could get the same km's people state they get.. using norman fuel :) i do understand its a cleaner/better fuel tho..but cant part with the extra 10c/L to use it

Some of us dont have any choice but to use 98octane (95octane if i really have to but it pings on hot days with it), Blame my hi-comp pistons and aggresive ECU tune for that. Having said that i still get great economy for the set-up that i have.

So im happy :D

Am I right to assume that its 600kms before the fuel light comes on?

i always thought it was good to run the car to an almost empty tank then re fill.

when i used to work for Caltex, i would sometimes use their vortex and that was really good on the engine. Does the difference between 98 or 95 octane etc make a difference on when you should fill up etc???

Hi I am a newbie here, I just read in here that someone said the fuel filter is located underneath the car near the tank? Is that correct for a 97 Magna TE as well? As I could nearly do all the servicing myself except I just couldnt find the Fuel filter.

On the talk about how far the tank can run. I believe 680km A BIG IF you travel long distance as I ever hit 350km with half tank. My half tank now hits 320km for normal drving to short distances.

An important note is your driving habit, If you press the acelerator without thoughts you probably only hit 485km with mybe a quarter left to spare. If you use the pedal lightly and carefully, you definately hit 550km without any effort.

I use Castrol Magnetic for my engine oil and seems to run well. Intend to change my Auto Transmission fluid soon.

I got 640km to a tank of Optimax last week. Got about 580-600km out of regular unleaded.

90% Country driving, 10% town. My driving habits are pretty eratic too. When I fell like it, I take off quick, which is quite often. Other times when the cost of petrol is high, I try to take it easy, but thats usually hard.

Does somebody know.....when the fuel light comes on, approx how many litres is left in the tank?

Holy crap 500-600kms!!!

I can barely get 380kms on one full tank!
My Verada must be sick or something or im just accelerator happy........!!

Sheesh, I might try driving conservatively, (although I think I drive conservatively already) and if I still dont get anywhere near 450kms, let alone 500kms, then there must be something wrong with my hungry engine!

And too repeat what the other poster asked, where is the fuel filter located? I just purchased a new one, but dont know where its situated. I was looking everywhere in the engine bay, but saw nothing of resemblance! The fuel filter looks kinda cool I have to admit, compared to my old Ford Lasers fuel filter, which was a little plastic container thingy lol lol lol

lol yeah currently I am already at 460km mark with at least a quarter tank more so should reach at least 500km.

I am already posting pics of the fuel filter on that thread. Its located below your car just slightly in front of the REAR LEFT tyre. you will see the filter there attached.
More advise are already posted there. Cheers!

get a service champ, i used to strugle to make 450kms out of a tank, i reken im getting over 500-550 now after my last service, hopefully will get 600kms when i put my CAI and sports exhaust on. Also get a K&N panel filter if you dont have one this should make it a little bit better

cheers

Approx 8 to 12 litres in my experience. Depending on when it first comes on. Mainly up-hills for me. But I've done further than 100km from when the light first comes on, and when it comes on and stays on, everytime I fill there's still about 7 litres left.
It's not the best thing to drive around with an empty tank, ya start picking up and dirt in the bottom of the tank etc, and if ya sucking air out of the tank when its nearly dry, doesnt do any good to the cat converter.

It maybe possible to get 440-460k's but that is it...

You guys that are getting 500-600kms out of a tank, are you guys running the 4cyl or the 3l V6?

Or do you guys have the 3.5l?

I have a 3.0L V6 TF. I'm not a conservative driver either. I mostly drive on highway though, which is probably why I can get up to 640Km.

Question about Optimax...I have noticed that I get maybe 50-60km more out of a tank than regular, and the motor is smoother and more responsive. The motor is basically factory standard. Does a higher octane in the fuel make those differences or is there something else about the fuel thats better?
