View Full Version : Advancing Your timing
Hey guys, me again
Has any1 advanced their timing?
if so, what have you set it to,
and what should i be setting it to for the best results?
ive got the 3L 24V engine btw
Thanks
Matt :)

You will need to set the timing on a Dyno Matt, this way you'll know by retarding or advancing the cams will yield more HP, that's what I'm doing for mine anyway...

Matt I thing is talking about ignition timing not cam timing.
Be very careful as your engine does not have a knock sensor so if you start to get pre ignition you may do damage.

i have advanced my timing but its a 4 cylder..
and u probably would all yell at me again...
Yeah im talking about ignition timing not cam, so whats the safest way of doing it then?

Nothing wrong with advancing the timing pines :)
Just be careful you may have to use high octane fuels all the time to make sure you don't get pre-ignition.

yeah KB u are right..
its been high octain All the way!!
NO pinging as of yet ;)
:) and im still playing with it!!
i have it awsome now ffor fuel but the mid range is a bit DEAD..
b4 i had it awsome for speed but it was crap on fuel!! so i decided to go for the fuel instead of acceleeration!
ide like to find some middle ground :)
can any1 help me here? :)
sorry, off topic, but thats more than 40 characters on that sig!!!!!!

It's an old signature...I didnt know they were only 40 characters until I went to change mine.
come on guys,
some1 must know how much i can advance my ignition timing safely
24v 3L incase it got lost in the off topic :P

i used it to adjust with pulp. i have no timing light whatsoever just pure feeling :D
imo unless you're upgrading to pulp, there's no point advancing your timing, just make sure that your car has the right timing which wil produce power and fuel economy.
just my 2cents
ive got no problems with running pulp all the time:P
i do half the time anyways
so hence why im asking... ive got a mate thats gonna advance it for me, i just want to know what others have advanced it to?

it wont make much more power dude... otherwise everyone would be doing it. Your most likely to lose power and time. Better to get a fuel computer and tune fuel and ignition MAPS. That way you can doi much more tweaking, without any blindspots. Your car deosn't have knock sensors, you should be careful.
peace
Hi All,
Anyone know how to do it for the TR/TS/KR/KS Magnas/Veradas?

GET A UNICHIP/OR GREDDY EMANAGE... $1300 a peice
Retarding timing will aid in reducing detonation. And using good fuel in conjunction wil ignition timing will increase power slightly.
In practice this process can be seen in imported cars. A Toyota Soarer for example. In Japan the pump fuel is over 100RON, these cars are tuned for 100+RON fuel. When they come here to Aus where the best fuel is 98RON, the cars engine management senses detonation, and reduces the timing advance, lowering the power output of the car.
Relate that scenario to your car; you wont be able to use the same fuel if you want more power by advancing timing (i.e the point in the crankshafts rotation at which the spark plug fires).
so $1300 will get me how many exta KW? (roughly) :)

if cars stock about 8kw, all the way through the rev range. Its not Just the power, it future proof as well. Everytime you get another mod, you can tune the fuel maps and timing to suit, maximising the potential of your engine and the modification.
If you have mild mods, like full exhaust including extractors and nice induction setup, you will gain alot of power by tuning to suit with the greddy emanage. (people have developed over 200kw with these mods)
Please dont expect there to be a magic power chip which unlocks hidden 50kw from your engine... its not possible.

ive got a K&N panel, redback muffler, extractors are probably gonna be on the list next then ill probably upgrade to a emanage, unichip motec or some other ECU :)

Andvancing timing will only aid in reducing detonation. Using good fuel in conjunction wil ignition timing will increase power slightly.
....oooooooooookkk Crazed info guy or mitsuboy or whatever please dont go telling people to ruin there pefectly good Mitsubishi engine's.
Advancing the timing will do the oposite and if advanced to far will induce detonation, you must retard timing to reduce detonation.
I advanced the timing on my ae86 only because at the time i was going to change the engine and didnt care for the current one, i just loosened the distributor and advanced the timing with the correct tools ( read. loosened the distributor and rotated it with my hand , then took it for a hard drive and if it backfired or had detonation i slightly turned the distributor back a bit and keep doing that) as a finale i drove up a big hill full throttle. This was over 6 month's ago and the engine is bloody strong , doing this the engine did seem to have a little more power.
However unless you know what your doing and have the right tools i wouldnt do it to a nice engine that you plan to keep.

Its Crazedmitsuboy, and you dont have to be a smart ass about it.
It was a obvious misprint and I'm sorry if anyones engine blew up because of it. If you read my other post regarding the soarer and how its knock control RETARDS timing (or any timing advance) to reduce detonation because of Aus fuel, you would have noticed the error.
Widow; What else dont you like about my post or name:?: Seems as though you have a problem with me...

yeah np, things can be easily misinterperated on forums. Its just annoying when people make a big deal over a petty mistakes thats all...

Yes - but it is always best to correct petty mistakes incase someone doesn't realise and does something to their car which could damage it - we are all here to learn!!
