i read on the faq how to get cabling through the firewall but there has to be an easier way. it is too ****ing hard to undo the white plastic cup and all that crap does anybody know an easier way? how has everyone else got there amps hooked up to the battery? do you have to hook ur amp up to the battery can u use acc or something??

I would hook it up in series with the +ve and -ve terminals on the head unit so the amp is only on when the head unit its. Because the head unit is connected to acc, the whole system is off unless the key is in.
i'm not sure how it would affect the power available to the head unit and amp tho... someone should know tho...

theres a remote cable that goes from the headdeck to the amp neway that controls it being on and off with acc

ok, well what about just hooking it up in parallel with the ciggie lighter?
To be honest I've never done it, but couldn't see why it wouldn't work other than possible power drains because it is distanced from the battery terminals.

nah already been told its a big no no

ok, well if you want to connect it to the terminals, I'd follow the bonnet release cable and try to feed wires through the same hole. I've replaced this cable in a commodore and it's a **** of a job (magna's would probably be a lot more simple) but it would work...

nah lol tried that today its probably more ***d than a commy. u have to take the whole side panel off and i could not be screwed

sorry but your gonna have to go through the firewall. There are no factory wires that you can use that will be thick enough.

okay so whereabouts in the firewall i dont want to screw around the way it said in the faq its too hard and fiddly gotta be a better way than that how did everyone else get theres through the firewall

aw man, thats crook. Is that how you'd have to install spottie switches too?
surely there's another way

spottie switches?
danstraz
04-09-2005, 03:24 PM
yea, if you wanted spot lights that have a switch independant of high beams.
What about through where the handbrake cable runs, under the console?
Could run out, under the car and up into the engine bay?

i will try ur handbrake theory out tommorrow maybe got any other ideas? do u have an amp?

Dunno about everyone elses car but for mine.
From the drivers footwell, looking towards the centre of the firewall, (level with the auto shifter) pull down the carpet.
You'll see a grommet with a tube already going through it.
Grab a screwdriver, poke a hole through, make sure you dont go too close to the metal as a cut here will result in a short circuit. Push the wire through from the inside.
I've fit 0 gauge through here easily.
This is hard to see from the engine bay as the grommet comes out just below the firewall deadening material.

wot is this guage stuff?
s_tim_ulate
04-09-2005, 03:35 PM
the gauage is the size of the cable.
0 gauge = large cable approx 50mm diameter.
You wont need it this big.
Go look at ur car and let us know if you can see the grommet in question.

yeh i checked it out it looks easier than the way on the faq ill try it out tommorrow. is this the connection ur talking about its like two pipes kinda together see the pics.

50mm! I would've used about 2mm myself :D
Don't have an amp yet as S_tim would know because he hasn't yet sold me a head unit, but I'm sure he'll get back to me about that soon :D lol
Na not yet, tried to put a cheapie in the comm but i think it was broken so didn't work.
I'm interested for when I get an amp myself.
Is the hole referred to in the '0 gague' post the same one that the bonnet release cable is poked through?
edit: cheers for the pics, makes things a lot easier

nah i dont think the one that opens the hhood starts at the hood release lever then goes up into the corner and then into the side panel of the car and down the side of the car towards the headlights then goes accross to the hood latch

50mm is massive is that a typo or not

Ah good work meiztom, (i've been sick of trying to explain where that grommet is, and too lazy to take a pic myself.) Thats the grommet, make sure you poke a smaller hole than the wire so it makes a nice tight seal, and use cable ties to keep the cable away from the engine block.
Ah soz was a typo... 0 gauge = 50mm^2 I think it's around 10mm diameter...

Yep is a breeze to fit through there, from there u can run the wires down either side of the car or through the middle. Plan well as u dont want ur rca cables running down the same track

man getting through this firewall ain't all that easy and i'd hardly call it a breeze. u have **** all room to work in, not enough light ( unless u got a tiny torch and a 3rd hand). i tried piercing a hole in the grommet and then pushing wire through but as soon as i take the wire out the hole just disapears i cant see where to put my cable through how did u do it?

i went througth in frount of the battery and over the wheel well and out under the console on the panssanger side i also have run 0 garge/50mm cable, was a little daunting working out how to get that bloddy house type power cable througth lol but it was easy as.

mathias could u take some pics or something to give me a idea how u did it coz it would help ive almost given up on the faq method and stimulates method.

just thought i'd mention....when doing the install in my brothers TH, taking that white plastic cup off was seriously the hardest thing i had to do! Strangely i cant remember it being difficult in my TE
I did it the FAQ way (pretty sure anyways), but I will keep in mind s_tim_ulate's way if i have to go bigger than 4 gauge in future.....so thanks tim :)
P.S. my dad took my camera while on overseas holiday otherwise i would go take some pics for you meiztom...

grab a 2mm drill bit, a centre punch, a drill, a 25mm drill bit and a rubber grommet.
use the centre punch in the spot you want it. pilot drill then big drill. clean the edges with a file, place grommet in, run cable thru... VOILA!

i will have to try that one day soon if i can be screwed
