I have been toying with the idea to de-wing my TJ VRX and I am 99% sure of going through with it.
For those of you that have done it already, is it a real hassle to take the back spoiler off and what did you use to plug the holes once the spoiler was off? Or is it recommend to take it a panel beater to do this?
Advice much appreciated.

Best advice, is to go to your local hardware shop.
ask them what a search button does !!!
then the answer to your question shall be revealed !
P.S.- i had my sports de-winged, swap your boot with some1 else's boot !

filling the holes up should not be a problem for a panel beater/spray painter, i had mine done for 100 bucks mates rates. So possibly 150 200 bucks.

Definately going to de-wing. Ego's is an inspiration.
What I was really wanting is what can be used to plug the holes on a temp basis? Just until I get the car to a panel shop to fix, or until I can get my hands on a boot with no spoiler. Any ideas guys??

Couldn't agree with you more Ego on removing the wing! It would be the first thing i would do to either a ralliart, vrx or sports magnas they look so much better without them! Can't believe more people haven't removed them.
Hey Ego where did you get the other pod for the second exhaust tip molded? looks awesome!

i love the standard look of vrx's ej TJ,TL, TW, once you mess with it by removing spoilers and adding 19 inch chromies it looks gay and ricey, then all you need to do is add a canon muffler, recline your seat back as far as you can, wear a baseball hat backwards, and you might as well call this a commodore club

Funny.. if you are refering to my car i dont really care what you think as its mine and does the job.. Oh BTW they arent 19 inch gay ricey chomies.. They are 20inch bling chromies..
You dont know what ricey is u fool.. my car is bling because of the chrome wheels, its aint bling bling as its not over the top and its so far from ricey that you dont even know what you are talking about..

Thanks mate.. I when to Repco and got some rubber gromits which come in all shapes and sizes to plug the wholes.. did a treat for around $8-10..

being the original black magna with vrx kit and no wing id say definately de wing it. the wing makes the car look higher than it is and makes the body look narrower looking at it from behind. Plus it detracts from the boot lids lines.

to set the record straight, i was only saying i like your car better in standard form than in modified form, it's your car, your money you do as you wish with it, i was only generalising about the modded car scene not you.

If I was going to do it, I'd buy another bootlid and keep the old one. 5-minute job to swap them over to suit your mood. :)

If you have the room to keep it this is the easiest and best way. If someone welds the holes in the bootlid for you and they aren't the best welder in the world they may warp and buckle the bootlid, resulting in your bootlid containing a large amount of bog.
By starting with a new bootlid you will have a good panel fresh and the job will be easier. Plus you will have a spare you can keep, sell or trade.
But not with me. I can't stand spoilers, Thats why they are called SPOILers

You can buy "blanking rubber grommets" from the screws display at Repco/Autobarn.
Work out how big the screwholes are and get the next size up.

It all comes downt to cost in the end. Thinking to de-wing I place some rubber grommets in the holes until I can get it a panel shop OR does anyone out there want to swap bootlids?? TJ 2002, colour is Sable. (black/green colour) Located - Vic.

would using ucalyptus oil (spelling) to get the sticky stuff off wreck the paint?
i would use a hair dryer to heat the sticky stuff and use a very very flexible plastic blade of some sort to scrape the majority of it off, then use a polish, maybe a very fine cutting polish if need be, to remove the remainder. Big Kevs Goo Remover may also work but im not sure if it would damage the paintwork or not...

I finally got rid of that crappie VR-X wing and the car looks brilliant!! Totally different looking car.
Tea tree oil is the go to get the sticky stuff off. I used a bit of it and it doesn't harm the paint at all. Just followed up with some polish.
Next is some wheels......

General question: How many people actually know what a spoiler (wing) does?
It is very funny when you hear the answers from all sorts of people.
1. It makes it look COOL!
2. It makes the car fly!
3. It makes the car go faster
4. It slows your car down!
5. Its meant to keep the car stable at high speeds.
Ego's car looks better without the wing I have heard quite a few here have mentioned it looks better also without, and those are from some who have their wings on, and regreted it.
Think the best way is to goto Wreckers to get a 2nd hand bootlid or get panels to do it for you. You get back you money back by selling off the wing.

Ok, update. Now that I have actually decided to take the damned thing off, and am amped to get it off, it won't darned come off! Twice now we have tried, and have been told by MitsaJerk that occasionally the screws (not the bolts) have to be drilled out, but Seiryu and I tried that today and it bloody didn't work! Argh, always the way! Did anyone else have MAJOR headaches trying to get the wing off their VRX?
All this talk about clipping. How much do 3rd gen black boot lids usually go for?
vrx578
20-10-2005, 10:45 AM
Yeah I had some trouble undoing one of the screws. I had to go the local Autobarn and get soem tool that I had line up in the screw head and bash the cr#p out of. Once it 'bit' inot the screw, then I was able to undo. There are 4 screws in total to undo. Once done use some fishing wire to pull through to sperate the wing from the boot.
