I just grabbed Michael Jackson's Dangerous album out of the shelf and went for a drive... It's an awesome recording. And really blew me away, I hadnt listened to it in a couple of years. I drove around every street near my house as I couldnt bring myself to go home till the disc finished.
I'm about to do some big CD shopping soon, so what good quality recordings do you guys know/use to test out ur systems or for general listening.
I used to listen to mp3's all the time and just use CD's to tune. But with the new headunit and new splits/tweets i just want to hear good quality music wherever I go. So I find myself moving away from the mp3's which are becoming worse the more I listen to them.
I listened to this from thedifference and had to buy it
The Eagles - Hell Freezes over (I bought the DVD)
Some other ones that are in the house/car -
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Sheffield labs
Alpine F1 - First Encounters
The Great fantasy
Genre is irrelevent, what are some quality cd's you guys have?
Peace

anything by Nick Skitz, some reason has a lot of Bass kick and rumble and a high sample rate..
other then that I use Bass Mekaniks 5 for Testing..
Pandisc have alot out there for the Bass Heads ( Self confessed)
Dj Lazz : Journey Into Bass , I don't know what it is but I love the Bass Sweeps that this CD has.. a Thorough Test from the Highs to the Gut rumbling lows..( Caution Pandisc and DJ Lazz contains Bass Frequencies that can destroy your equipment Use caution when listening)
Click Link for a Demo of DJ Lazz's Journey into Bass... http://www.emusic.com/album/10598/10598391.html

To test my bass out, I'd just put on any Lil Jon track.
For SQ, I find that Shania Twain's music is fantastic, her voice is so clear, and there's still a bit of bass in her music to keep you pumped. Keep in mind, you do look like a homosexual (not that theres anything wrong with that) driving around with it.
I also got a lot of ballads - love and power ballads.

I agree that Dangerous is an awesome sounding album - i found the HIStory collection to be of similar quality and has some great sounding tracks. (so punchy and awesome rhythmic drive)
I just recently bought an Album called Fishermans Woman by Emiliana Torrini... It has a wonderful warm lush feel to it and gorgeous intimate close mic vocals... Not much in the way of bass but sounds awesome when i crank it up at home (where my real HIFI is!)
Any Tracey Chapman or Joan Armatrading CD tends to be well mastered and sound awesome on a quality setup (just beg you to keep turning up the volume) Although the earlier Albums are a little bass heavy (which most people love) - but if your system plays tight and clean they are thouroughly enjoyable
If You like Dark Side of the Moon check out anything released by Alan Parsons (or the Alan Parsons Project) - he was the sound engineer at Abbey Road for the Pink Ffloyd Album
If you enjoy classical music Phillips Eloquence and Deutsche Grammaphone releases are excellent value for moeny and well mastered (and the cannon fire in the 1812 overture is AMAZING on a high end setup... you cant beat a full orchestra for an incredibly dynamic range of music)
The earlier versions of Cafe Del Mar are great - up to about volume 7 think were all mixed by Jose Padillia and are gems for loungy chillout music
If you dig Hip Hop and like French check out any MC Solaar album - theyre awesome! Great attack, a good test for timing, image and plenty of deep lows
Dianna Krall- The girl in the other room is a stunning album
KD lang - Hymns of the 49th Parallel - Simply: Breathtaking!
Hope this helps

DUDES... Seriously, you gotta get your hands on Perth band Pendulum's CD featuring "Fasten your seatbelts" as heard on JJJ.
Seriously wicked techno that will rock you WILD !!!!!
It's new, riddled with bass and set to be the new hit Techno CD for the year.
My Fav track is "Tarantula" :D
mm, anything from dire straits is very very well recorded! has just about everything.
perfect circle i found wasn't too badly recorded. Gives your midbass a good workout...i saw a cd called maximum bass or somthing when i was at work on saturday. im not game enuf to play it in teh store, coz it has course language, but yeh...that would definately be one to consider if u want to fry some DD :P
dire straits- the grestest hits i think it was- but kinda too old for my liking
perfect circle- (everything, coz i like 'em)
tool- amenia
pink flloyd
tracy chapman
gorillaz- demon days
tracy chapman- odyssey
i find all legit cds are really good coz i'm scungy:P

Agreed MJ's albums are fantastic for testing the tonal balance + clarity of any system; it can really open up your ears to the finer sounds in music, if you are used to listening to poor quality MP3s most of the time.
Other albums I have found to be excellent include:
- Dave Seaman: Renaissance Desire
- Deep Dish: Yoshiesque
- LSG: Volume 2

i always find the foo fighters sound like sh*t on my system, so maybe a good way of testing a decent setup?
and cant go past a bit of beethoven for highs and lows and inbetweens :)
or try moonlight sonata...such an awesome song! theres a version going around with a bit of rain and thunder at the start, sounds really good :)
might be able 2 pick it up on a cheap classical cd, check the bargain bins! lol but it is a good song! or i can give u a torrent, dunno what quality the mp3 is tho.
or or or the forrest gump suite...that is a really good song!
and 4 anyone that feels like knocking me 4 liking classical music, u can bugger off! i went 2 a musical high school, so was fed classical music from years 8-12!

Man that is a Killer album - Jeff Waynes Musical Version of War of the Worlds!
I have that on double cd and double record! :D
If you find anything mastered by Jo Hanszch then it'll be a good quality CD.

Your all gonna flame me as being a lil try hard punk kiddy butttttttttt im gonna say it none the less. The last Used CD In Love and Death has been recorded in very high quality running through my boston splits its awesome to hear the champagne glass shrill coming out of the tweeters (All that Ive Got) and you can hear all little additions in songs which you just cant hear with normal computer/stereo speakers.

I like Ultra Sonic.. nothing like Driving Hardcore Beats of up to 180 BPM to test the Woofers and 6x9's not good for Testing subs, beats are a bit quick..
They are usually High Quality Recordings too..
Nothing Beats Money For Nothing by Dire Straits, the searing Guitars nice Drum beats very pleasurable at High Volume or at Low Volume..

I have found Fallen by Evanesence to be an exceptional recording. Very clear, well engineered etc.
A must have for any audio enthusiast's CD collection. Turn up very loud and enjoy it.
hmmm, evanesensensce and norah jones i find are good for imaging, but the highs are CRAZZY, I can't stand them from my tweeters....way too sharp for my liking. anyway, yeh, i don't dare turn it up without hearing protection!

Yeah Money is one of the top SQ songs around. I saw a chart of the top 10, but seem to have lost it.
I agree with Diana Krall, also listen to Evanescence and love Cafe Del Mar Volume 7, have also got volume 8 on cd but not as great as 7 imo. I've got the rest on mp3.
Does anyone have Lateralus by Tool in HDCD, I was thinking of buying that, I've heard good things, but never heard the whole album.
And same with A perfect circle I've never been into that music but want to expand my horizons a bit. I find it doesnt matter what genre, if its a quality recording I'll always learn to love it.
Peace

Faithless is always a great one Tim. Very clear, awesome bass at the start of one of the tracks on their 'best of' album (so run it with low volume first)
Andrea Bochelli (sp?) is great for male vocals. Most incredible sound engineering I have ever heard. If you can get a DVD-A copy of Romanza and run it down to 96KHz CD (or DVD source from the car) then it is just awesome. Expect tweeters to die a nasty death!
Chemicals from an original disc are good. It's always amazed by how Good nightcub systems reproduce those discs. Up the mids for the Chems though.
Depends what you like. Stay away from overdriven rock (foo Fighters) or vocoder'd dance.
Love Story (Tim Deluxe Long Mix) by Layo and Bushwhacka! is always a fave of mine.

Yeh huge faithless fan, I've got their special edition disc from outrospective which is really nice.
Saw them in concert last time they were in Melbourne.
Also a big fan of anything Ministry (in terms of music)
Pure Euphoria (digitally mixed by Matt Darey) isnt too bad for SQ, but I want to get my hands on some Noom. Anyone know where you can get Dark side of the Noom in Vic? Meant to be an awesome SQ techno disk (yes apparently there is such a thing ;))

If you think MJ has some interesting production quality try Ryuichi Sakamoto sometime - the Master of pop production quality and very much (poorly) copied. Track down the old 'Beauty' album in the $5 bin and play the track 'A Pile of Time' cranked... guaranteed to melt your sub-woofer! Pic Below...
David Sylvian as well (protege of Sakamoto's) - try the 'Everything and Nothing' twinset, David Bowie's 'Let's Dance' and the harder to get 'Tonite' are both great played very loud (big, BIG BAND backings). In recent stuff - Anthony Callea's album isn't half bad either when you crank it up and there are some new dance mixes of his out as well which doof doof surprisingly well for an 'Idol'.

I have the cd, and love turning it up LOUD. Sounds great! Love drving up next to boguns trying to pump out panel rattling doofdoof from cheap speakers and drowning them out with some Andrea!! Provides me with entertainment! :bowrofl:
Evanesence is another one of my favorites though up loud my baffles start groaning. I NEED to make my mdf ones :(
Nothing like a bit of beethoven to test the overall clarity and quality (not volume) of a system though, with a whole range of sperate refined instruments coming out cystal clear.
Eeks starting a band!
:D
damnit, you weren't supposed to tell anybody!
I'll have to reconsider your application then
yeh, Noom apparently has a good reputation...goodluck finding it though  then again...techno :doubt:

since alot of peeps listen to classical, has anyone had a good listen to some of Kenny G's music. The saxaphone really tests the boundries for the stage, so does pan pipe music.
And yeah gotta love stopping next to a car load of bogans with mozart or vivaldi playing, or anything classical, just gotta make sure the windows down a bit when you do it

I like my Bass, DJ Lazz has Bass so low that all you can here and feel is port noise... regardless of whether it is a 6 inch Ported PC Subwoofer or a 18 inch MTX so low it goes straight through you Guarenteed to make Even stock car audio sound good..
Kenny G??? Possibly if you like great sounding Elevator music!
Bass Apocalypse 2 has a Cool Bass overdoesed Remix of " Baby Got Back" Nothing like a track like that to show off the Booty in your trunk...

Dean Martin is something my folks play just to tick me off..

I've found Michael Buble's latest one (cant hink of the name  ) to be really well recorded with excellent vocals and a range of different instruments. Comes in real handy for setup & testing. Any Van Morrison album is also pretty good for testing, the later releases are better quality than some of the original stuff though. Couldnt live without my bass mekaniks discs though, nearly 1hr worth of sines, sweeps and pink noise :D:D:D
Daily driving though I'm listening heaps to Jamiroquai's new album Dynamite, its awesome! I'm also really digging MOS - Chillout Sessions 7 and Foo Fighters In Your Honour (disc two - accoustic).
PS if anyone has a copy of the Focal or Alpine test discs hook a brother up! Been trying to get hold of them for agesssss!

Hey tim have you heard the highway one cd?. I believe many years ago it was used for sq aswell. It has 15 music tracks, 20hz-20khz test track, zero bit track and a couple of others i'm unsure of (freq wise). Found it really good for staging as theres a coincidence stereo mic track on it,
Wouldnt mind getting my hands on the iasca cd cant remember what it was called though, it had I A S C A across the front and other words aswell. Any1 know this cd??

havent heard highway 1. But I have all the test tracks you could think of. Sweeps, pink noise, white noise, resonance tests, drum staging, voice staging, phase checks etc.
Not sure what the iasca disc is, when I find any I usually grab em asap

My Fav track is "Tarantula" :D
hehe... pendulum is drum n bass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_and_bass), not techno.
drum n bass = 170-180bpm with a breakbeat
techno = 130-140bpm with a 4/4 beat
glad you liken it though, dnb is very under appreciated. pendulum are pushing the more commercial side of dnb but there's a lot of very quality producers out there if you are willing to do a bit of digging.
if you like pendulum stuff head over to http://osiris.bur.st and dl a couple of my mixes and have a listen.. you will prolly like the suburban alert mix
here's a direct link to it (http://osiris.bur.st/djosiris-suburban_alert.mp3)
:)
I have been trying to fond an album of theirs in stores but not luck. The only track i have heard from theirs is "Spiral" it kicks ass.
that's the first track on my mix :)

Most people classify any type of electronic music as "techno," it's sad really.

Wow!!! That's good to know. I really like drum n bass music then... Does that classify "squarepusher" and "Photek" as Drum n Bass then? I love their work as well...

squarepusher can be classified as drum n bass although it's very experimental drum n bass and he uses lots of jazz elements as well. you won't hear it on a dancefloor anywhere
photek mainly makes drum n bass.. although i'm pretty sure he has also produced some house and hip/hop recently. :D
other sick dnb artists are subfocus, noisia, chris su, concord dawn, dieselboy, the list goes on
http://www.dogsonacid.com/mixes/ is prolly a good place to start to download some mixes.
