View Full Version : "Sucking" sound after killing the engine

I've recently noticed that my 2002 TJII auto exec makes an extremely strange sound immediately after killing the engine. If I have my window down, I can hear a sound like air being 'sucked' quickly for less than a second. Sort of like a "SHHHWOOOOMMP" sound.

Kinda sounds to me like air either being sucked into (or out of) the plennum or maybe a cylinder. The sound definetly originates form within the engine bay - but is so short, I can't pinpoint exactly where it's comming from.

Like I said - I've only noticed this sound recently and infact the car has been completely stock up until recently and I'd never noticed it when it was stock (this doesn't mean it wasn't happening). In the last 3 weeks I've installed the following items on the car:
* Flowed Throttle body
* K&N Pod Filter (in the engine bay - temporarily)
* Redback muffler

I'd really love to hear from anyone who can shed some light on what would cause the sound I'm describing, or give me any ideas as to what I should be checking.

Thanks.

I'd think it's the pod filter dude.

Yep pod filter or CAI was my first assumption too.

Dont worry about it, sounds cool...

Tell em thats the BOV. :p

its the pod.

check the clamp on the pod to see if its tight as if it is loose it will cause it to be louder in terms of whooshing
you should hear it when u have CAI..it is very loud

wow - 3 out of 3 for the POD filter. I didn't mention it in the original post - but this sound most certainly doesn't exist when the car is running, I've confirmed this by sticking my head under the bonnet when it's running, and even when giving it throttle - I wouldn't describe the sound as 'whooshing', if anything the difference between pod / no pod is a deeper note comming thru the exhaust.

The surface area of the pod is huge, and air passes thru it with relatively little restriction - it would have to be a sh*tload of air either being sucked in - or expelled out the pod to make the sound I'm describing. It sounds alot more like expanding air, or air under pressure escaping or being sucked thru a relatively small 'gap'. I'm not saying you guys are wrong - but I can't imagine why the pod is the culprit. I guess if everyone out there with a pod experiences the same thing, and no ill effects then I guess I can live with it too.

Thanks guys.

yep it's just the pod, mine does it too, nothing to worry about.
well, not specifically the pod, but the fact that the sound suppression provided by the airbox and intake is removed when you put a pod on.

If the winner of the X-torque dyno comp says so - I'm convinced!!

LOL - just joking

Alright - I feel better about it now. Thanks Johnny, Synrgy (love the car BTW), Tim and Disciple.

I think I'll follow Tim's suggestion and tell everyone it's the BOV!

your car is trying out for the new role of darth Vader in Car wars..
My friends VR SS does the same thing, kind of like an Asthmatic Wheeze with the igniton off

Yeah, same with my pod... I'm glad... cos it's one less BOV noise I have to make out the window while i'm driving.

Its the air intake. Mine does it when i had a pod on, quite loud. And with the standard induction system, not quite so loud.

Its normal, I get it on gear changes from 1st to 3rd.

With the K&N Pod on my ks, I coud hear hissing sounds as the engine is running and the sucking
sound is much louder with the bonnet open.

It's the pod but not because it's a pod. My car does the same and it's a panel with the entire stock induction gear still there, resonators and all. Quite normal.

Actually, I don't think it's the pod at all. I believe it's the air.

I think we need to talk about this in detail...

Sounds really cool i reckon.

Same here. My KR has a stock intake (and everything else at the moment  ) and there is a "sucking" noise after the engine is turned off for a second or so.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say that you've got a major problem with your cylindars...

You've actually been pushing your car so hard that you've put a hole in one of your cylindars, and when you turn the key off, with all the background noise of the engine running gone, you can hear the air rushing out of the cylindar as the piston tries to compress it...

It's a fairly major job to fix, you'd probalby be looking around the $5k mark.. And all the stuff about a pod is bs!

jk dude.... lol
