Just had a friend pop over with his set of 6x9's that he bought about 6 months back for $9 from a certain store...
He was telling me he just bought them as a " Step in" until he got his chosen choice as his Old ones had deteriorated with age..
So I had a listen to them... for $9 he still paid too much..
To look at they looked like a reasonbaly built 3-way 6x9 with Blue chrome Mid and Tweeter with wires attached to the Mid range from the Immediately noticable Poor Paper cone big woofer with a noticable foam surround, you know your typically Built Chinese constructed speaker.. Upon firing them up I could hear what I first thought was the Voice coil scraping and really poor clarity ( Running them from a 25x4 Headunit) so I said to him lets pull them out and check for any signs of foreign matter around the spider and anything that look liked it rubbed.. Tracked it down to the Mid power wires hitting the bottom of the mids magnet structure. At this point I still believed they were a 3-way...
I asked him if he still had the Box , he said " Yes,its still in the Boot" so upon checking the Specs of the Box I looked at it and it said " 3-way Design 6x9 inch woofer" then way down the very bottom near where it says it was built was an * with a little side note stating
*This is not a True 3-way 6x9. Only the Woofer is connected in very authentic looking print that most would need glasses to read....
Sure enough upon closer look the Mid woofer and tweeter were only thin foil with no internals to them at all.. so we cut off the fake part and that eliminated the bad rattle...
My friend now knew why his fill in speakers were so cheap and sounded bad...
Please read the fine print on the side of any Car audio equipment to stop getting burned when reality sets in...anything priced that low is too good to be true
