Im guess'ing its not normal on an AUTO, the gear should not be able to move as when your dirving it shouldnt be able to 'slide down' on its own.
If it was a TIPTRONIC it would be different.
Id suggest getting it check out, unless someone else on here can descirbe why its like that or if its safe still.

normal - off the top of my head i'm gonna say it's a feature of all auto transmissions. All the auto cars I can think of having driven anyway.

yyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaayyyyyyyy
was worried aye lol
you can pretty much shift from N->D->N->D while the car is moving without any problems. Just
make sure you apply a little throttle before moving from N->D. Done D->N many times in my KS
accidentally and just shifted back to D without having to stop.

Thats very interesting that you need to press the button to go down to 3rd, or back up to Drive. I've driven cars where there is no lock on 3rd but a lock on 2nd. 3rd is nearly always used in my opinion since its the 1:1 drive ratio in autos so a lock shouldnt be neccessary.

I drive a 02 Nissan X-Trail occasionally (auto) and it has 1,2,D,N,R,P and you can freely move it from N - D, D-2 and vice versa BUT to go from 2-1 you need to push the button in then move it into 1
This is just to help confirm TecoDaN's conclusions :)

it wont let u go into third because third gear is part of the hold pattern where the ecu doesnt change gears for u
drive is automatic so when u go from nuetral to drive the computer calculates the revs and speed and selects the appropriate gear
