View Full Version : Car Vibrations at 100km/h

Ok, before anyone asks me, yes, i did get my wheels balanced and rotated several times, and the problem still persists.
Here is what's happening.
I drive my car as usual. As soon as i reach 100km/h, the whole car starts vibrating. Not just the steering wheel. I know i need new engine mounts (one on drivers side and the firewall side) and i need new steering bushes, but asking around, and that shouldn't cause those vibrations.
So im out of ideas.
Anyone have any clues or hints where else to look?
Cheers in advance

Sometimes it is not enough to just balance the wheels off the car, you may have
to get them balanced *on* the car itself. Only some places can do it.
Dad's big S-class ran perfectly fine around town, but once it got onto the highway
it started shuddering too... nothing fixed it until it got its wheels balanced on-car.

no matter how many times your wheels are balanced and rotated, if your wheel allignment is out, your tyres will wear unevenly and you'll experience shaking at speed.
A wheel allignment will set you back about $38 at your local tyre centre.

Theory, and I mean its just previous experience that I encountered with my previous old car.
Some engine oil can cause your engine to run not that smooth, and when I was using my old car, I tried using those cheap engine oil from Kmart etc. When I drive, it starts to vibrate at 80kmh quite badly and sometimes even bad stalls at traffic lights.
I changed to Castrol oil and it ran smooth there on. No vibrations what so ever. Again this was only some past experience, I did my wheel alighnment etc but that didnt help. Ensure you have a good and right grade of oil too for your engine. Again I am no pro, its just a guess, worth checking though.
Cheers!

Hey, I am getting the same thing, but have recently gone to a 235 wide tyre, I dont know how wide your tyres are but I have a friend in a maloo hsv and he is getting the same prob as well.

Regular balancing may not be sufficient depending on your car (everything to the nth degree combined always causes issues). You may need on-car balancing as suggested, or even radial or lateral force wheel balancing (only very specialised outlets have equipment to do this, such as State distributor branches for Bridgestone).
Try a set of known-good tyres/wheels from another car too.

yup it be good if someone does come along to say that cheap oil works for me. lol
Again, I am not trying to start some arguement here about the Engine oil, I bought those cheap ones like $6 for 5L? Thought it saves me some cash from buying branded ones. But this vibration did happen. and I changed it to Castrol GTX normal grade grey colour bottle, and everything just ran much better. (this was an old Honda civic)
There is no doubt that the tyres can be lousy etc... normally right pressure and everything counts, so wheel alignment its a normal thingy to do.
cheers!

Well, i know im not using some cheap sh1t oil. And i had that problem before and after the oil change. My tyres are 235/40/R18 and i didn't have this problem 4 months ago when i first got them. Only just started maybe last 2 months. Ah well. Might try that on-car wheel allignment.
Will keep ya's posted.
Thanks for all the replies.

just a thought but it could be your wheel bearings.

How many k's? wouldnt be a gearbox problem? Im not sure if a worn/damaged gearbox would do this but its a suggestion to check out.

I don't think a gearbos would have much to do with it...

Ok, could be out of round tyres, this is often a problem
Did you go to different places for the balance? Could be that the machine is out of calibration
Could also be drive shaft, have had this happen to me.

Hahaha, I use fully synthetic race oil so it aint that.
But, I have fixed my problem, I took my wheels off to spray my callipers black, and the buggers put them on with the ratchet gun, needless to say they were hard to get off, even broke my two of my tools.
But after putting them back on normally without over tightening I took it for a drive and it is as smooth as, so element try that mate, it worked for me.

Could be out-of-round wheels. Take the wheels off the car, put it on the balancing machine,
spin it up and hold a pencil to both the inner and outer rims and see if there are any
movements. One of my wheels from my ks was out-of-round and doesn't matter how many
times I get it balanced, as soon as it is put on the front, the car starts to vibrate above
100km/hr. It is not very noticable when it is at the back.

I did end up using that stuff at one stage, for when the Corollacoaster was using 8L/1000km. But then again, it was a bomb, for when the Magna was down at the shop.

Just an update for people. I have tried new steering rack, wheel balance and allignment and still did the vibrations. However, it moved to 110km/h now. So, now i have changed all 4 rotors (and break pads, not that this makes any difference) and the vibrations are gone. I knew my rotors were warped, and people kept telling me that rotors wouldn't cause this. Not to this extend. I guess sometimes you just have to try yourself and experiment and make your own mistakes. Luky for my i didn't listen and changed them anyways. :D
Good luck to ya all
