Has anyone else ever experienced whining power steering.
My KJ2 currently sounds a little like an old VN commy that has had a hard time. It is giving off that whine sound. I'm 99% sure it is the power steering. It still works fine but is noisy. The fluid is at the correct level but have to admit is very black.

Car is still under warranty so will take it back but i'm sure they will say it is due to the filthy oil. I'm sure it doesnt mention anywhere in the service book about flushing power steer fluid. Could be wrong.

Anyone else ever come across this?

How does powersteer fluid get dirty?

17yrs & 200,000km in my TN, never flushed and the reservoir is always red.

Current KJ is red too, no whining.

I always avoid doing max full lock and holding it there for long times, do you?

Yeah i never even touch the bump stop at the end. I donno how it gets dirty. The little white filter tube was clogged with black stuff when i got it out. Cleaned it with de-greaser. came up like new. Even my KE and KH fluids get a little off coloured but still fairly pinkish/orangish but neither are like the KJ which is nearly black.

You recon Mitsub will warrant it with the dirty oil as they dont recomend a flush at any stage?

Probably best to go back & quick.

Uncle's TN blew a powersteer pump when it was about 4yrs old, cost $400 to fix.

Really no idea where/how/why the hydraulic fluid can be black... unless
someone's gone and filled the reservoir with engine oil or something worse.
Nothing gets burnt in the system so there's no possible source of carbon,
it don't get exposed to dirt as its all sealed by boots.

My TN reservoir got refilled with ATF too... just 'cos there was some lying around.
That's definitely red.
