View Full Version : Electronic Tune Up?
Well, yeh Ive been posting and creating new threads like a Mad-man today! LOL
This is getting addictive, I dont know how I would survive without this community!
Anywayz, Ive just recently taken ownership of my Verada, thats why Im asking all these maintenace type questions.
Well yeh, as the title states, I was wondering whether or not an Electronic Engine Tune Up was necessary? And what do they actually do in a electronic engine tune up?
Im wondering, because im pondering whether or not I should have a Tune up. Because what im thinking is that in an engine tune up, they check and adjust engine timing/ignition timing etc.... and looking under the bonnet it says, "engine timing/ignition timing - non adjustable" so I was assuming that, a engine tune up was not neccessary, as im guessing that, in a engine tune-up, thats what they basically do, like check and adjust engine timing and ignition timing etc....IF im wrong let me know...
Thanks for the help guys....
Anyone? 40ish views and no replies?
Or is this just a stupid post on my part?

There's nothing to tune with a 3rd gen. You can't alter the behaviour of the ECU without installing a piggy-back computer. Sorry.
So I wont be neglecting my car, by not doing one as I cant do an electronic tune up at all?

I think by electronic tune up you mean hookup to a dynomometer and adjustment to dwell angle amongst other things.
This is what most people assume is happening to their car when they take it to places like Dyno-Tune etc but cars aren't really fiddled with this way any more (unless you have an old car) presumably because the computer (ECU) handles all of this now.
If you have a programmable ECU (which I'd say you don't), then that's a different story as they are "tunable".

They probably just disconnect your battery for 5mins then hook it back up. Then charge you $80.
If you pay $120 they might check your ECU for DTCs too.
Hmmmz maybe not that.
This is what I mean. I took this quote from Lubemobile.com.au.
Electronic Tune Up
This is performed using a diagnostic oscilloscope (tune scope) to check and adjust the engine and the fuel/ignition systems to ensure peak performance, reliability and fuel economy. A compression/balance test will be performed and results recorded.
And so by that quote from "Lubemobile.com.au", I take it that my Verada does NOT need an Electronic Engine Tune up, as the Engine/Ignition timing etc. is NON adjustable.
Am I right or am I wrong?
So all in all, there is no need for an Electronic Engine Tune up?
Have you guys ever had an Electronic Engine Tune up done on your 3rd GENS???

clam down man.... give it some time
ahahahahaha
I will, I just had to get that last post out before I forgot.
I shall relax and wait for replies.... lol

best thing you could do for your car is a major service so you know that every thing in there is new. timing belt, sparkplugs, plug leads, distributor cap, oil and filter air filter, fuel filter, etc. most of this you should be able to do yourself. even change brake fluid, coolant basically start from scratch. Then do regular services every 10,000km after that.
Never trust log books they are easy to dodgy up.
and forget about the "electronic tuneup" i doubt whether there machine will talk to the mitsu properly
So an Electronic Tune-Up, gets a "BIG FAT NO" from everyone in here?
Because its not NECESSARY??
If so, then my questions have been answered!
Thank you!
Much appreciated!

CRAP YOU CAN RESET IDLE SETTINGS SPARK PLUGS AND PLUG GAP.... THERE IS NO TIMING AS THEY USE CRANK SENSOR.... THE TPS CAN BE MOVED AS WELL ....ELE TUNE ALSO CHECKS IDLE SPEED IGN LEADS KV READINGS EXHAUST READINGS ECT

Idle settings are reset by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes, makes little to f*ck all difference, idle along with fuel/air maps, ignition timing, shift points and anything else worth 'tuning' are all controlled by the ECU.
The ECU that only a mitsubishi service centre can 'tune', and even then the most they will do is throw a later firmware version in if there is a known issue - they sure as hell aren't going to do any 'tuning' in the literal sence of the word.
If you want to pay "lube mobile" the price of an 'electronic tune up' to check the condition of your spark plugs and leads then that's your problem (they'll charge you an arm and a leg in labour to check the rear bank plugs), and as far as emissions testing the vehicle, all that will reveal is that either the catalytic converter needs replacing or the car should be booked in with mitsubishi to get it's ECU checked out!
As others have said - these cars cannot be 'tuned' due to the ECU being locked down. Anything else they will charge you for is just testing, and inspection of parts. If you're worried about plugs / leads, ask your mechanic to check them out next time you have it in for a service........
Thanks Black Beard and all others that posted.
You guys have answered everything that I needed to know.
As I was assuming an Electronic Tune-Up was unnecessary for our car, due to the fact that it was stated under the bonnet, that the engine/ignition timing etc..was non adjustable. And as an Electronic Engine Tune-up consists of checking/adjusting those things, I assumed it was not needed for our car.
However, I still had some doubts and questions to be answered, that is why I posted my query here. Glad that you guys could help, and also glad that I did not end up shelling out cash unnecessarily for something that was not needed. My wallet is also breathing a sigh of relief as well, thanks to you guys! lol
Once again, thanks for all the input.
Cheers!

lol disconecting the battery does not reset idle theres a 10 to 15 step procedure to reset base idle the max you should pay is 1 hr lab for a mechanic to reset idle and check the ele system out including tps, idle, kvs, plugs, exhaust ,,ect disconecting the battery only resets fault codes if there are any ........
What are these 10-15 steps. My car isn't idling properly, and I've already replaced the ISC and checked the throttle postition sensor.
If there are any mechanics here.....HELP ME!!!!!
Hmmmmz
Whats KV readings?
Whats ISC?
Whats TPS?

KV = KiloVoltage, refers to the spark plug voltage.
ISC = Idle speed control motor, it sits under the throttle body.
TPS = Throttle position sensor, tells the engine computer how much the throttle butterfly is open.
Sure there are some general service items that can be done, but none of the above or a "tune up" is needed unless you have specific problems with the engine.
Oky doky!
Thanks for the heads up Leo!
Cheers!
