Guys,
I'm looking at buying a set of 17inch rims which were on a car that was written off.
Two of the wheels are damaged, and I'm wondering about getting them repaired.
Both of them are "Gutter Scratched" what I would call "Moderate". I think it will be able to be buffed out to my satisfaction. (I think that I'll inevidable scratch them at some point, so it's not a huge big deal if they don't look 100% brand new)
More importantly, they are both 'dinted' so they are off round. One has one smallish dint (about 4cm long) and the other has a couple that are a bit bigger. I had a really good look and neither are torn/cracked so I think they are pretty much OK.
I'm just about to call around for quotes, but I'm just wondering if anyone here has had this done, and your experiences with it.
Thanks,
-Dan

Good suggestions guys.
I think they can be fixed OK. no cracks or splits or anything like that. I explained the damage to the guy on the phone and he said it sounded run-of-the-mill (obviously, he needs to see 'em)
I just got some quotes and I'm going to get it done (probly tomorrow).
One of the wheels was completely destroyed (thrown away) and one is perfectly OK. So I'll buy two damaged and one fine. I'll now just have to find one more ;)

Do an anonymous check with your insurance company over this. Most insurance companies have kittens about wheels being repaired.
Repaired wheels will never be as strong as they used to be so make sure you get a couple of opinions on their repairability before you get it done. Sounds like you are doing that already though.

Didn't think of that one. Will do.

what about regular 'gutter scratches' on my VR-X 17s? how do I get them buffed out? Can I do it myself? the scratches would go about 6cm along the very edge of the rim where it meets the tire, and are prob 1mm deep in a couple of places, maybe 2mm.
Anyone??? :)

I need to have my front right repair, im not sure if it can be done however.
Thanks to a silly asian lady (not being racist) cutting me off in her big new mercedes only to rear end the car infront of her and forcing me into a median strip. Well anyway it left me with a nice dent in my rim, its not leaking eair or anything i just wonder if it can be rolled out, if not i'll just buy another and keep that one as the spare :D

Yes kerb side scratches and those mentioned above can be fixed.. It will generally around 140-170 per alloy and what happens is that they fixed up the damage and re paint the whole alloy wheel a brand new look...

Well,
I just dropped the rims off then.
The guy was a little concerned about the bad one. It has three 'dents' in it.. and it had some funny little lines that he said are a sign it might crack when they try to roll it.
The other one with only one dint he said would be no worries.
Both would be no problems getting the gutter scratches out.
I took some pics with a mates digital cam, so hopefully when I get them back I can have some nice before/after for you guys to have a look at.
Fingers crossed I get two rims back.

Im thinking of repairing mine myself. I just need to be able to have some stocker rims while I do it..and to get my tyres off.
I was just going to do a strip and clear over the rims again as it's not the chrome that's come off..just the clear over the top.
