I don't know if many people know about the process of extrude honing or "Abrasive Flow Machining".
It is used in many industries including aircraft & water. It is much like porting & polishing but alot easier & in some ways more effective.
What it involves:
An abrasive paste is pushed through the part to be machined IE cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds etc. Pretty much anything. As the paste flows through it removes the burrs from the sides & polishes & bores out the part.
The good thing is it reaches every area that's possible & makes it more consitant then doing it by hand.
Anyway check out this website for more info as there is a lot.

Engineers firms are more likely to have the equipment to do it so if anyone knows someone or how much it would be great to know.

I read an article in hot 4's once about this process (had a white wrx and the sexy owner, she had a fit bod so did the car). It is particularly useful on turbocharger and supercharger components and also the harder to reach areas within the head/s.
I tink there is a place in sydney that was profiled for that article, but there should be others that do it all around Australia.

yeah i dont know if many places are doing it, as the paste is being forced through it follows the best route it can, like the air would, most efficient process out there, anyone know if this is happening in brissy?? easier and faster the the old machining

Haven't heard of one in Brisbane but that mob is in Sydney. Dudes and Redcliffe Dyno put me on to them ages ago. Seemed to be a decent price for the work but for the gains, hard to say it's justifiable.

just as a side note, i used to own a 1.6L efi lancer, and i had the cam reground and the head ported and polished by a place called Ultra Torque Heads. Got the car back and with previous mods included was comletely undriveable in the wet and great fun in the dry.. lol suprised a heap of people at the lights and track. It was also very lumpy at idle and very willing to pull all through the range. Was great for track days but a bit too light in the rear.
Have thought about visiting them again and seeing what they can do for this AWD magna.

would be interesting, wonder how it compares to RPW's pricing.... Sure you'd have some downtime while their off getting done but how would it all compare?
Anyone else had the heads of for a port and polish and care to share the costs??

with the AFM process you can also get different grades of paste.
Again I don 't know how much better it is in terms of gains etc.
Might ring some people I know who do it tomorrow & see what the costs are.
