well after a bit of impulse buying i went out and bought a new HU, its a pioneer, cant remember the number of the top of my head

anyway, i got my dad to help me install it. i suggested we use an adaptor of some form to connect it, i get " bah, we dont need no steeenkin adaptor"

long story short, theres now no hu at all in my car, neither of us have figured out which lead is accessory and which is always on (obviously ground was easy to find) and the original plug has been chopped off hours ago.

we connected the HU`s ground with anothe ground we found elsewhere in the dash

dad decides to take a stab in the dark as to which of the 2 wires we narrowed it down to would be which (after disconnecting the battery of course) and wired it up as such. after recconecting the battery, no go. so we switched them around. still nothing.

any ideas? wiring diagrams have been no help whatsoever..all just to save 80 bucks i am seriously regretting DIY

At a guess, you haven't got a ground, or neither of them are power wires.

I say, go and spend the $80 you saved on a multimeter and find out for sure.

Also, check the fuses around the car and deck.

to find the acc lead u need to turn the key to acc position and then use either a multimeter or light bulb and test which cable has power. with using a light bulb you connect one part to earth the other to the cable.

Or if none of them have the acc them u might have broken the cable somewhere, that or you wired it to something wrong

Tom

edit: multimeter is about 20 bucks unless u want a pro one

well at the moment im thinking its not grounded properly. ive got a multimeter but not a clue how to use it. the 2 wires we assumed were power were a red one, and a red and white one. these were beside the ground wire.

match the colours up with the right lead off the pioneer instructions :) piece of cake!

would this guide be applicable for a TS in saying that it does not have a ground wire? because that would explain alot.

yup that would b correct

just print that out, then go 2 ur dad and say 'looky what i've got' and he'll probly growl at ya :P

yep just did. hopefully we''ll sort it out tommorow

thing is with that diagram tho, the colours explain do not match the colours in my car for those positions

Off memory (for a 3rd gen), so I dunno whether it's applicable or not, but red/white is a speaker wire. red is +12V acc, and yellow is +12V

oh my goodness.

dodgeybrothers installation :bowrofl:

I would never had gone ahead with installing it without knowing which wire did what.

Switch ur multimeter to DCV- 20Volts. Basically all u need to do is go around every wire, touch the red probe to the wire, and touch the black proble to a metal part of the chassis. If it displays something (usually 12V :P) iit means its putting out power. Follow what TF_ADVAN said, switch the key over to identify between constant and ACC.

I suggest u get a little crimp-on ring terminal and bolt that to somewhere solid on your car as a ground. Stock ground positions can't be trusted.

Next up, once you're done, find the ones that aren't putting out power, and grab a battery (any kind) and touch the wires to the battery and they'll pop. that will tell u which speakers go to which speaker. To find out which one is positive and negative u could try shining a tourch to the speaker and see which way its moving, or u could check and see what colour the wiring is (somtimes u can't see the speaker, and sometimes the wires colours don't match up so eh)

If you have a multimeter, its easy. All you have to do is switch it over to the section where it has this continuous line ____ over the doted line ........ and put it on the double digit number.

Conect the black lead onto ground, and with the other lead, while the car is off, touch it to each wire you have there. The one that gives you a reading would be your constant power. Turn the key to ACC and do the same to find acc.

Or as TF_ADVAN said, find a light bulb and do it that way.

EDIT: **** this thread moved fast.

Wouldn't that imply that it's not a power wire.............................................. ....

yes, but we began to doubt that when we got the same result for each wire

its all unplugged now. start again from scratch tommorow, armed with a wiring diagram this time

i know what ur going through, instead it was worse for me, left the battery connected, blew 2 fuses, and then the car immobilised itself - after 5 hours it was done :P

the ahhh test light is pretty good, coulda used it DURING the installation - not after, but ah well.

hope everything works out fine

definatly helps if you dont just assume a certain set of wires were speaker and not test them at all :P

lol how could you possibly test the power wires if you disconnected the battery?
That's why you didn't get a reading from any of them :P.

Hehe, was gonna say the blue/red wire is ur acc wire, but you've got it sorted. In my TS, that wire was disconnected (along with the consant +ve), but the previous owner had put in all new power cables. (So when I put my headunit in, I used them)

BTW, Good to see im not the only one who impulsely buys a pioneer headunit (end of financial year sale at strathfield)

Mine was because my headunit consisted of my discman plugged into my amp that was powering my fronts. I scored a free set of Boss 6" 3 ways, that i have no idea what to use for
