i have a boss 1000watt amp and a 12" eoss sub bridged on two channels. gain is max, super bass is on max. so anybody got any ideas why it is distorting? even at fairly low levels

There's a problem.... :P

Try turning it down. SOmething turned up to max is gonna lose quality. Try running 1 km flat out. You'll get pretty tired pretty quickly.

Try running 1km at half full speed... You'll do it alot easier ;)

turn off the 'super bass' - it is artificial EQing of your signal before it is amplified.

Quite often this can distort (overdrive) the signal before it goes through the amp.

remember: Garbage in, Garbage out.

Hence, your signal is distorted before the amp, it will be distorted after the amp.

There are a few other things that we would need to know about your system to give a better answer, but the golden rule of setting up car audio is: Set all EQ's to nil (centred, or zero dB), and gains all the way down. The turn up the gains until you just start to hear distortion. Back them off just slightly until the distortion goes away. Then 'fine-tune" evertything with the EQ's.

Gain isnt a volume control. It is relevent to the voltage of the signal coming in.

It is a sensitivity switch. If you turn it up the pre amps will start clipping.

Instead - Set your gains properly.

To do this turn the gains down to min, headunit up to 3/4 (or highest point without clipping) Its usually easier to unplug speakers if practical. Turn the sub up to the highest point without clipping
