View Full Version : Hydraulic clutch problems

Ive had problems in the past where the car hasnt want to change gears smoothly, like its not releasing the clutch properly. Well today i had to (once again) pack the pivot on the clutch release fork in order to give it more travel and release the clutch, but now theres another problem.

For it to go into gears properly (up and down) i must double clutch, i think it may be some way of it "pumping up" the clutch with hydraulic fluid, but ive bled the system, maybe i have to do it again.

what i think it is, is that now that ive "fixed" the pivot, the piston in the slave cylinder now rests much more retracted than before (like almost all the way in). So could this be why my hydraulic clutch doesnt seem to be pushing the release lever enough? I replaced the clutch, along with the hydralic stuff, not too long ago, and this car, well the clutch, is really giving me the s**ts! I am so sick of it!

well you've definately got more mechanical knowledge then me, so this most likely isn't going to be any help, but maybe your synchro's are worn? is the rough change the same into every gear?

I have had similar issues with the red Elante.
1) Hydraulics shot - pretty easy to check though, pedal would get stuck at the floor and not come back up by itself and felt spongy.
2) Syncros shot - 2nd and 3rd are gone on the old girl's box.

Nah shes not the synchros, its gotta be something to do with the hydraulics, but i replaced them not long ago (like 6 months to a year ago).

If i put my foot on the clutch, from the top until about half way down the clutch feels like it has no resistance and the second half of the travel is fine. When I take my foot off, the first time i do it, the clutch comes about half way up normally then snaps back to the very top, then i do it again and its fine. Its not that its losing pressure cause if i double pump it and hold it the second time it holds its pressure just fine.

Its kinda like the self adjuster is adjusting itself backward! I dont want to spend another $150 on parts and have that not the problem!

Thanks for you input anyways guys :D

Not overly familiar with the early models but the later model slave cylinders have slotted holes so you can adjust them forward a bit. Just a suggestion but loosen of the bolts on the slave and wiggle it forward then tighten up the bolts

Sounds like there is air in the hydraulic system and it needs bleeding. There is a bleed nipple on the slave cylinder.
