hey all,
I've just installed a 6.5" touch screen and i was wondering if there is a way to bypass the "park" feature so it can be viewed while the car is in motion...
any ideas???
p.s. is it legal???
any help would be appreciated
cheers

I don't believe it's legal, hence why they make it so you can't see it. But there is away to get around it, ****ed if i know what it is though :P

Hook up the handbrake wire for the screen to a ground source. Problem solved.

As others have said, it is illegal.
If you really want to be illegal, you'll find a switch somehow wired up to your handbrake. A lot of people install an isolator type switch in a 'secret' spot so they can have the screen on all the time but if they need to go back to full legal mode you flick the switch and hey presto it's operating on the handbrake again.
I can appreciate how frustrating it would be not being able to see the touch screen to change tracks or stations or whatever while you're driving, but the law is there to stop people getting distracted by tv or movies while driving.
Exactly how you'd disable it would depend on how it's wired.. and I've never seen one before :(

What about if you have kids in the back, who want to watch the tv? Why the hell is it illegal, doesn't make sense at all.

my touchscreen works as my headunit, so i wonder where the law lies...
what happens when they make headunits that are ALL screen?

There isnt an actual law that sez it has to be hooked up to the brake afaik.
That is just how they are installed.
playing a video in ur car is VERY distracting to other drivers and if a cop sees it they will have grounds to tell u off/fine you.
Besides the dangers to other drivers, there are also issues in respect to copyright, and you playing a commercial movie in the open. etc etc
Anyway, who cares, if i had a screen i would want it working whenever i want to watch it, so...
Ul have to disable the switch that goes to the handbrake. (Confirm that it is a handbrake switch (when the car isnt moving ;))
If so follow the wires down, find the switch reconnect or disconnect the wires appropriately. Post a piccy of the switch if u cant figure it out.

Yeah, sure it's distracting but so are hot women walking down the footpath, but we don't have police officers pulling them over and fining them. Which reminds me of a Seinfeld episode.. :-)

Yeah..... What about the new JVC EXAD with the 3" screen built in? It's gonna be a grey area I think..

Some brands of DVD players such as Pioneer provide a front and rear video output. The front cuts out with the handbrake whereas the rear video does not.

What a stupid law, heh, sorry for my negativity and ignorance on it all but that really is stupid. There are many distractions on the road, and if having a moving image on a screen in your car really causes accidents than these people shouldn't have their driving license. A good looking car would be more of a distraction, like a done up Magna, Commodore, or Falcon. Undercar neons, loud exhaust, a ferarri, a good looking person, a loud stereo, an ambulance, a police vehicle, a speed camera...I could keep going... :)
anyways, thanks for that hurl_m, pretty interesting stuff if you ask me.

Yeah I completely agree with you. There is a complete lack of personal responsibility on the roads these days. Everyone is trying to blame everyone else for their own mistakes. It's this sort of attitude which leaves us car enthusiasts being the scapegoat for the ignorance of others.

the handbrake cable is not ground, and on most HU the cable that goes to the handbrake is a +12v
so all you have to do is wire the cable into a acc power and it will be on when ever the HU is on

if this is the case with the copyright laws, then how come new pajero's and many other cars often have TV's with DVD players (mainly for rear seat passenger)... the new holden Caprice is a brilliant example with the monitors mounted in the rear of the front seat headrests as a standard factory accessory... they are there for the entertainment of the rear seat passengers on long trips, they are there to watch DVD's... surely the copyright laws dont prohibit this type of use??

I have a switch to turn the screen off straight away, so when i see cops I just switch it off.
If they do end up noticing it I just come up with
"Its my in car navigation system my mates hooking up for me, but its not working yet" :bowrofl:

Laws generally prohibit the public broadcasting of copyrighted material in a public place without a license. I rather doubt that inside a car is considered a "public place." It's no different to somebody walking past your house and being able to see your TV in your loungeroom (WRT copyright laws obviously, not the distraction issue.)

These laws are just about impossible and unreasonable to enforce, so no one really takes it seriously :bowrofl: . Only, if your presenting it as a public event, and making money from it will it be called into question... and even then, most of the time no one will do anything about it  ...

edit: exact NSW laws are
299 Television receivers and visual display units in motor
vehicles
(1) A driver must not drive a motor vehicle that has a television
receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operating
while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if
any part of the image on the screen:
(a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position; or
(b) is likely to distract another driver.
Offence provision.
Note Motor vehicle and park are defined in the dictionary, and vehicle is
defined in rule 15.
(2) This rule does not apply to the driver if:
(a) the driver is driving a bus and the visual display unit is, or
displays, a destination sign or other bus sign; or
(b) the visual display unit is, or is part of, a driver’s aid; or
(c) the driver or vehicle is exempt from this rule under
another law of this jurisdiction.
Examples of driver’s aids
1 Closed-circuit television security cameras.
2 Dispatch systems.
3 Navigational or intelligent highway and vehicle system equipment.
4 Rearview screens.
5 Ticket-issuing machines.
6 Vehicle monitoring devices.
A touchscreen that only displays head unit controls whilst driving would be considered as a vehicle monitoring device IMO.
