Hey all.. as some of you know i own a 2002 VRX.. since ive owned the thing i have had a noise in the engine that is like a rattling ticking noise, esp at idle.. it gets a lot worse come the warmer weather like summer.. I know there has been a few other people here that have experianced the same noise and know one seems to have the answers but everyone likes to think they do.. Mitsubishi keeps telling me its the engine pipes so they have replaced them three times and the noise is still there.. u would think once or twice was fine but its there money.. that didnt work so they then replace the Cat convert.. still there..
Well.. my car was at Hitech Mufflers yesterday and i told peter to have a look and see what he thinks.. He had a good look and has come to the conclusion that there is an exhaust leak at the heads.. he says the headers(exhaust manifold) arent sitting on the heads properly.. he said the Manifold needs to come off and be machined and replace the Gasket and use silicon on Gasket when replacing and that will fix..
So for those who have the noisy idle problem on there 3rd Gen its proberly the headers not sealing properly at the heads.. its ment to be a common problem..
well im to Mitsubishi now..
Good luck & cheers
Jason :D

Could some people be passing this noise off as transmission rattle?
I've been told I've got that and a trans rebuild will fix it for 5,000k...
Similar?

Yeah I got a manual too, and notice a sorta rattle when in neutral with the clutch out. Is this the same as what you're talking about or not?

ego... had the same noise... 02 TJ Ralliart (as you know)
took it to the mechanic (performace mechanic)
turned out to be conrod bearings... get it checked... otherwise you may get a close look at a 6G74 piston, through the side of the block...
ive only done 42,000km's too btw... was only 550 to replace... DO IT

I had that noise badly at idle, got the tappets adjusted, all gone now.

I've got the dreaded rattle noise after the car is warmed up. My next thing in the list is to get some thicker oil and see what happens. It's not the usual tappet noise however, because it is louder from the bottom of the engine then it is on the top (which amplifies yet again making my car sound like a diesel during those extremely quite moments).
Ego I have a feeling you have a different problem, the last time I heard your car I didn't hear any rattle noise like mine. I'll have to compare next time I see you.

I had the same noise on my 2nd gen, turned out to be that exhaust manifold was missing 2 of 4 bolts holding it in  . The gasket was worn out also which made it become worse gradually. But all is good now :D.

I've got the same prob EGO is describing. Mitsubishi replaced my 'engine pipes' once, and I think the sound may have gone away/got quiter for a few weeks - then came back exactly the same. I figured if it was the 'engine pipes' and nothing else, and mitsubishi were just gonna keep replacing them with ones that do the same (under warranty mind you) - then I wouldn't worry about it.
I'll be replacing the stock headers very shortly (if Dave hurries up and gets Race spec headers back in stock!!! only been waiting a month  ) - hope not to hear that crappy sound again after that.

My old TJ was like that, rattle sounded louder from the bottom than it did from the top - was still the tappets though - what can happen is say you had a couple of noisy tappets on the rear bank, close to the body of the car, the noise is actually amplifeid off the panel, and out the bottom....the only reason it sounds louder from the bottom is there is more noise at the top of the engine than there is from the bottom - so it "sounded" louder from the bottom than it did the top.........
