View Full Version : Replacing V6 valve stem seals, what parts?

From what I can presume, I will need the following:

- Valve stem seal set (12 pieces?)
- 2 Rocker cover gaskets + 4 bolt seals
- Inlet manifold to head metal gasket

I'll have the spark plugs replaced at the same time, is there anything else that's recommended? Engine has done 290,000Kms (and in surprisingly good condition)

Is there anything else I need, as I will be sending my car + all parts to the mechanic's, and don't want to get that dreaded call 'We need xxx part, and there are none in stock, you will have to come back in next week'

Thanks :D

Would it be cheaper if we did it together??? Mine has 270000km and also in surprising good condition... :D

valve spring compressor, a air compressor, a magnet, and a tool to fit into the spark plug hole to keep the valves sitting up while the spring is disconnected, wouldnt hurt to get a few extra collets either - just in case

Thanks Rhino, but my mechanic will be doing all the work so it's a fully equipped workshop. I just want to make sure he has all the required parts so that he doesn't have to get them from Mitsubishi on the day and potentially run into a situation of no stock.

What are these collets you're referring to; should I buy a small collection of them in case mine go missing, or are they replaced as part of the stem seals? How many should I buy?

Also the end caps in the head, on the drivers side, these go hard.

You do not need to remove the lower manifold for any reason other than you want to, so I would just leave it there.

Well anyone in SA bring it over, can do these with my eyes shut. BTW, you do them heads on, no need to remove the heads on the second gen.

Ive been thinking of doing these on my TR 4cyl for a while now. And its seeping oil from the valve cover.

I did mine , well , her's really , on her TS 2.6 ; heads on , used air to hold the valves up .. As a mechanic I make a good electrician , but it went well , about 3 hrs I think .. all the necessary info can be found with a search ....

I got quoted $20 for the seals and $8 for a gasket, need to find a spring compressor and some string to fill the cylinders with. Maybe new spark plugs since ill have them out anyway and not sure when the last owner changed them.
