Hi guys, I'm in NZ. I have an Australian esmebled TP Glx Magna Wagon 1989/90

I have been having problems with the water pump. It seems to be leaking through the small holes on the top and bottom - I think its stuffed. After stopping for a while, I have to refill the radiator (how embarassing!)

My question to you is this - can it be pulled apart and have new bearings and seals put in or not.

My other question is can you put another model's water pump on.

I really don't know what to do I'm stuck!

I have been quoted from supercheap to get the right pump it is $80 and from Mitsi it will be $170 (big difference)

If you can get a compatible (new?) pump for $80, go for it.

It ain't very hard to install yourself on the AstronII - coupla bolts, coupla hoses.
Might as well renew the $15 drivebelt also whilst you're doing that job.

Yeah I know, I'm a girl, its a thingy magig.

Yeah its a small hole on the top to the left of the bolts (in the middle that join what looks like the two halves). Does that make any sense at all.

Thanks guys. its great being able to talk to people who know what magnas are like. I'm glad I stumbled on the website.

Would you know if Repco or Supercheap have the seal that i'm after.

You know if it were NZ emsembled the pump would only be around $50, and easy to get.

So what if you're a girl - being sexist of something!?
Even one of the mechanics at Porsche Centre here is female.

Don't know what those holes in the pump body are for, but yeah if water is
coming out of there it means its getting past the bearing seals in the pump.
Dunno if the seals can be replaced alone, but for $80 cheaper just buy new pump.

(I used to shoot some aerosol grease into those 2 holes... why I dunno either.)

You cannot replace the bearing in the waterpump. Well, you can, but it won't seal.
And, you can get the waterpump for $80 trade, from Bursons.

I'd assume you should be able to pick up the gasket from such places.

It is simple to replace. If I'm bored, and can find the camera, I'll create a basic step by step on Sunday.

(I need to visit the u-pull-it, for I need some bits and pieces.)

AU -> NZ Freight is damn expensive though. The supercheap one would be better.

Having said that - the seller you give (Ringwood Auto Parts) rocks :)

I am female and have replaced several items in my car - alternator - water pump - reverse switch - tappet cover gaskets and the rest. Just coz ur a chick dont mean u cant do it. its piss easy and just remember that when you do the belt up, dont tension it to tight coz that leads to leaking water pumps. the belt should wobble slightly. (its in the manual - well for my car anyway lol 91 TP)

if i was you, id err on the side of caution and just replace the pump for $80. they do have a tendancy to corrode and leak : \ had to replace mine few years back.

Interstate? International more like it.

Freight to NZ is horrendus, even to post a letter there costs $3.00. I can send one to the US/Europe for $0.80.

I recall ordering some stuff from Germany a while back, had it within 3 days, faster than within Australia LOL

You guys rock.

I actually did a pre-apprenticeship paper, oh god, way back when I was 20, (6 years ago). So you see I have forgotten ALOT of things.

I've decided, along with my neighbour, that we are going to replace it with a pump hes got, and hopefully all the bits match up. (its of a galant). And reverse all the plumbing. So we will see how we go.

I dont want to spend to much money on it, it runs like a piece of s??t

Yep it costs $170 from Mitsi - its the geniune part, and the others are generic.

Hopefully it will work. I've also got a blocked carby jet, so that will need cleaning out - god i have doing those. I remember at course, i totally stuffed it up. I was really good at all the theory, but not really good at the practical. The tutor concentrated on the guys in the class instead - sexist twit.

I must say i do like to tinker with cars

Just get a SuperCheap replacement pump complete,.. yours will probably be fully rotted inside, and you would probably break it where it goes into the engine block.
Get some silicone (automotive) and a belt while you are at it.
Don't use plain water, use premixed radiator fluid, it will help to stop corrosion.
