Hoping i can get some help on this, Just got myself some
Focal 165 v2 polyglass splits and upon inspection the cross overs have several switches
one for the tweet (0db, -3db) and one for the woofer (0db, -3db,-6db) ,
im putting the tweets down low like stimulate has them and obviously the woofers are in the door. They will be running off a JVC DOHC 2x150wrms amp. Any ideas were these switches need to set to.
any help is much appreciated
cheers

Nice spreakers. Well done.
I would set everything to 0dB and have a listen. If it sounds too bright (treble-y) then set the tweets to -3 (that's half as loud). I wouldn't touch the mids at all - you may as well just turn down your amp....
but yer - tim - where are ya?

I was pretty stoked picked them up for $220 delivered.
I was a bit concerned the cones look very papery but appearently thats what there meant to look like ??

-3 dB is not half as loud. A 3dB change is about the amount that is just noticeable in absolute loudness.

-3db will just take the edge off the Tweeter..
I would wait till the SQ Brother Posts up....
S_tim_ulate will be able to offer some settings for you as he has a talent for the High end sounding Gear... If you need Bass I can help there...
I would Run the woofer at 0-db that way their is no attenuation on the Woofer...

Try it at 0 db on both. As the tweets are down low and far away from you, you may want to attenuate them +3db, to get a bit more character out of your top end. But generally you can leave them at 0db, unless the tweets are up high when you need to take that edge off them.
it depends what music you like as well
Light cones have high sensitivity = good
You want to highpass your fronts between 50 and 120 hz. Depending on how much your doors can take and how loud you want to go.
I'd try around 60 and work your way up from there. If you dont have a sub you may want to run them full range (for low volumes) and utilise the drivers natural roll off. (comes down to how you want to listen to them. If you find them distorting, raise the hp level.
Good luck, let us know how they go, focals are very nice....

the paperish look to the focals do make them look a little cheap compared to other speakers, but thats because focal dont worr about gimmiky looks or colours to try and sell their speakers, once they're in and u listen to them, you'll be very happy :D i love mine!

The focals are known for their brightness though.
titanium metal dome tweets, can be very harsh.
All depends what type of music you listen to, when listening to band/live music i find the focals are amazing.
With club music (techno/trance) I dont like them so well.
The focals are very different to other splits but, and im guessing this is why they are so different to other speakers.
Because the crossover is set so high, the tweeters only play very very high frequencies, where as most other tweeters go much lower then the focals tweets. Thats also why the tweets have such a low power rating, bout 15rms. Not to sure if its the same across the whole focal line but thats how myne are.
Also 3db just represents a double in energy.
Eg a 200 watt sub is 3db louder then a 100 watt sub.
9 db increase is perceived as a double of loudness.
So to get a double in loudness you need 8 times the energy
100 watts to 200 watts is 3db gain
200 watts to 400 watts is 3db gain
400 watts to 800 watts is 3db gain
Overall gain from 100 to 800 watts is 8 times energy and 9db (double in loudness)
hopes that clears things up.
oh and about the focals, keep the tweets low when installing them and probably on the lowest setting for the attenuation.

Ok i have them in, Left them set to 0db and wow they sound so clear.
the tweets are a little harsh up high,
cant beleive how much better they sound then the kickers.
I mounted the tweet on the door above the woofer (about 6").
Without any tuning they have awesome imaging and yeah the live acoustic music sounds so real. Also added more sound deadening to the doors aswell.
I used the spray on stuff until the gun exploded and covered everything  .
Its a pain to clean.
I've basically turned my sub off just so i can hear the fronts now. Very impressive.
I get the same volume now with the HU on 28 as with the kicker it would have to be on 36.
how long do they need to be played(burning/running in) before cranking them. Al did tell me i just cant remember
I'll play with the crossover today and see what results i get. Thanx guys
Cheers

I am not sure what the Focals need but my Magnat woofers came with a Certificate saying they had already been burnt in for 24 hours..

Damn thats not good, I usually Paint on Sound Deadoner instead of Spryaing it... It reduces the risks of accidents..
If it Dries then the only thing you can do is Chip it off.. There should have been removal instructions on the can...

Not entirely sure about the polyglass, but my Utopias have an inverted tweet not a domed one, and it's got a fairly high rated power handling, and the magnet is around twice the width of the actual tweet cone. But yeah the tweets are very very strong, they have huge presence and in some music can be too much, I guess it depends on what your listening to. Interesting you mention that the focal crossovers have a very high low pass for the tweets as I'm running my tweets through my clarion crossovers because I preferred them :P
I found the very same thing as you, in electronic music(in particular my mates gothic/industrial) the focals didn't work, to precise and hurty on your ears even though awesomely clean, but put them behind instruments(my metal) and they work a treat, separation and clarity :P
Tis funny how the cones look cheap tho, I thought the same thing, but then again if you look at home audio top end, the cones are mostly paper and are nothing to look at. The excursion of the focals is phenomonal though, at a guess I'd say mine have 3 times the excursion of my old clarions and punch a whole lot lower.
But all in all there awesome and I'm not dissapointed, I'd recommend focals to anyone if they're prepared to pay the money as they can be expensive, unless they listen to electronic music.

Yeah, maybe its just the polyglass.
But in general, the higher the xover the less power handling it will have of course. (another duh thing i guess)
So im guessing the utopias xover is lower then the polyglass hence the higher power handling.
The 15rms on the polyglass tweets is just weird.
good to see im not the only one that things the same bout the focals with electronic music, hence im getting rid of myne.
Def going for a soft dome tweet this time, unless i can be bothered hooking up these home theatre horns for my car

The tweets that came with mine (tn47) are inverted dome. They are a little bright but using the EQ ive taken some of that away. Now i have done that they seem to perform very well with all the different music i have tried. Its probably a good thing i dont listen to electronic music,
All in all considering they really need to be mounted properly and tuned properly they really do sound very nice.
hopefully over the next few weekends i'll be making up some pods similar to the one tim has made. And of course more sound deadening, this time no misshaps lol

Lucky I don't listen to didly squat electronic music ;)
