Ok, We need to look at Two things
1. Power Wire to the Amps does it only happen with the Car off ???
2. Settings on the Amps.. Too high could be causing Excessive Current draw
After we look at these we then have to determine if the Battery and Alternator are up to delivering the current needed..
If your Power wire is too smal then it may be struggling to provide the neccessary power..
The only other thing I can think of is The Amp hitting thermal protection does it have a protection light ?? if so does it come on when the sub cuts out ??

never tried it with the car being turned off only when i'm driving
power wire to the boot is 0guage to a distribution block then 4guage to the amps, speaker amp runs off a 1.5farad cap but sub amp does'nt ... just straight off the ditibution block
battery is an odyssey 1200
not sure about a cutout on the amp but even if it's been running for a longtime it's still cool to touch
speaker amp is a crossfire vr404 and sub amp is a crossfire vr1000d mono amp ... if that helps

Well the Power wire seems up to the Task and so does the Battery..
We then have to look at other possabilities such may be loose wiring or Poor Grounding..
Thermal Cut out or a Short could be possible..

Check connections. one of your wires could be shorting out causing too much current draw.
Either power or speaker wires
Doesnt sound like ur overheating if your amps are still cool. Most likely being loaded down too far.
What config / load you running ur subs at?

my first reaction would be to check the sub terminals inside teh box for any shorts, even cabling between sub box to amp. Thermal protection cutoff normally occurs gradually rather then a sudden cut. So I think its either a short or you're clipping the amp.
So yeah, i'd suggest start with these diagnosis first and work your way down the list.

when it cuts out though as soon as i turn the volume back it comes back on
for example if the volume is at 35 for say 5 minutes it'll cut out but as soon as i turn it back to 30 the amp will come back on

It does have the symptoms of thermal cutout without the signs of heat??
Possible Short in the sub coils causing the amp to short and cut off??
( Its only a Theory not a 100% accurate assumption)
I don't know it does sound Tricky..
What we have to establish is if the Protection light comes on when it does cut out...

It is the speaker wiring i rkn. The amp is being loaded down too far, either by incorrect wiring of ur subs. Or a wire shorting against the ground or another wire.
Have you check your connections at the amp?
Short in the sub coils sounds very unlikely. It will be something simple.
It's obvious that the amp is going into protection, so u dont really need to know if the protection light is coming on.

when we tested and tuned it we ran it a high volume without any problems ... it's only done it about 10 times in the last couple of months ... on the other hand i only drive the car on weekends if at all as i usually use the work ute

If it is itermittent it still may be a loose wire
HAVE YOU CHECKED THE WIRING :P

we rewired the sub amp yesterday to take it off the cap that i was using so from the distribution block to the amps was pretty much all rewired and the battery side was fine when i put the new battery in yesterday ... when it cuts out the speaker side of things still run fine
it just sounds like the subs loose bass as you can kinda still hear them vibrating but very low
sounds like a wiring problem, seeing as though it turns off.
Does the 'protection' light come on, or does the amp look like its completely dead? (no lights at all)
it says the VR1000 can be loaded down to 1ohm to produce 1000w on the website. Im assuming you're running the two pioneers? loaded down to two ohms? (two 4 ohm subs wired in parallel?)

Looks like a Process of elimination..
I agree with EEK, we need to see if the amp goes completely dead or just into protection..

the protection light does come on ... amp stays off for about 5 seconds then comes back on again
*i think* it only does on real bassy music from memory

What load are you putting on the Amp? 2ohm, 4ohm? Sounds like the amp is faulty to me.

i think the subs are running at 4ohm ... what are the chances of a faulty amp though ? that's why i bought something more upmarket to avoid these kind of problems you get buying the el cheapo amps

we upgraded the earth wire from stocko to 0guage and it seems to have fixed it ... was talking to an audio rep and he said what ever your main power wire is your earth should be the same size
see what happens in the next few days
on another note though i had to pull out my air filter box to replace the ground cable and my air filter was that full of crap i could'nt believe it ... not bad seeing i've done 200klm's since my 60,000k service
they did'nt even check it
