I had a look through past posts and found the end results but no " how to " threds.
What materials do i need?
Is it as easy as i'm thinking it is?
Can anyone help out with a guide on how to apply the tint ?
What is the legal amout of tint in QLD ( if any )?
Some pics of any 2nd gens that have had this done.

Buy a can of Nightshade tinting spray from supercheap autos and give that a shot.
yer just buy the night shade, all instructions are on the tin...
no amount of tint is legal, no matter wat u put on there its illegal
ive tinted mine and they look good :D but mines a 3rd gen. i didnt do them black black but they are darker, my old 1st gen i had them very very black, looked so hot and i never got pulled up about it

Yeah me too.. I gave mine a really light tint.. Just to take the sharpness out of the colour.. After u tinted them slap on some clear coat.. they will look heaps better..
Thats not the best shot and its in the direct sun.. oh yeah and that was before clear coat..
And that was all curtesy of my loverly girlfriend.. Great job tanya.. :D

The tint looks so cool hey. Do I have to remove the lights or just tape around the edges?.
I'll go get a can today and give it a try.
If I figure out how to i'll put before and after pics up
Would this spray stuff stick to headlight covers too?

yes remove your lights saves over spray on ya car, make sure you clean your tail lamps with wax and grease remover, then spay 4-5 coats per light but let each coat dry before applying more coats, then clear coat once finished with 2 coats and the the will lok great :D
yer also if u leave it on and u spray too much on it will drip...
u have to be careful while doin it too, it does apply alot more then wat u think

Apparently Acrylic clear can make the nightshades go white.. We used Quick Dry Enamel on ours.. Had to pack it on a fair bit thicker than the nightshades but gives a good result.. and you guessed it.. dries quickly too :)

Do I go over the reverse lights too ? I'm just about to start pulling the lights off the car and paint.

Yep the lights are off the car and the first layer has been put on. Good thing I tested it on a broken head light cover, my first practice attempt didn't go so well :) . I'm taking photo's as I go so people in future can see how it was done too. Also I bought higher wattage bulbs just incase I make them too dark.

do you spray the outside of the lights? i thought it was the inside?
Atlas
19-09-2005, 05:23 PM
The outside. To spray the inside would make it very hard plus if u get into any trouble with the " law " u can always just remove the tint. I haven't put the clear coats on yet but i did test it on my trial plastic and the brand shown has no negitive effects on the tint. Hope my little guide helps. Oh go by a socket set if you don't have 1. you'll need it.

Funny thing is that I thought that tail lights are there to show others when you are stopping, turning and when you are there at night.
If you get rear ended with tinted lights, be prepared to pay for your car and the other car as the person can easilly claim they were not aware you were slowing down, even if they were tail gaiting.......
I prefer bright, that way everyone gets the idea I am stopping.
smokeykebab
19-09-2005, 05:30 PM
good point. thats why theres a light in the rear window.
Madmagna
19-09-2005, 05:34 PM
Well I hope you do not get rear ended then as last time I looked there were no indicators there and also this is a very illegal mod, most police will not agree with your "good thing there is a light in the rear window"

i wont make them that dark then. or i wont drive at nite.

If you want a darker look that is legal mate why don't you go for the TR Elite/XI Verada or KS Verada as these have a darker look to them with a clear look indicator

atlas man, its looks grouse, and so do the lights. :P
id put a few more layers on, only looks semi-dark.
oh and dood, Debadge ffs!. just finished mine about 15 minutes ago, took and hour and 30 minutes to do, anyhoo.
cant wait to see what it looks like, and just a rough time frame it took you to do all that so far?
Atlas
19-09-2005, 07:23 PM
Can't remember what time i started at but
* Removal of lights - 10mins
* Cleaning lights - about 30mins ( I let them air dry inside as not to get gunk on them )
* I put the coats on in 20min intervals - 4 coats
* No clear coats yet coz it got dark too quickly.
And for those worried about legalities IT IS ILLEGAL to have them FULLY tinted unless you get the ok from your local transport dept. An alternitive is to place tape on parts of your lights ( in a circle or mitsu symbol mabey? ). These parts will miss out on the tint and still be fully visable - and IS legal. ( I gave the cops and transport dept. a call ).
Also remember to give your tail light housing a good clean when you remove the lights, you'll see what i mean.
