G'day Fellas,
I recently purchased a Boss 1200 watt 4 channel amp at a reasonable price, to compliment my Kenwood 7x10's and Blaupunkt 6" rounds. The amp seems ok but everytime i switch on the head unit, i recieve a squealing noise followed by the amp switching onto the protection mode. im not sure what's causing this and so any info you could provide me with would be really apreciated.
Cheers in advance,
Leon.

Have you checked all your wiring. Maybe rca's need re-routing or replacing

Sounds like you've either got RCA's touching car metal or one of your speaker cables are touching car metal.
Solution:
Dont let them touch car metal :).

search for altenator whine... its been done to death.

Try moving RCA's away from power cables.

He says the amp goes into protection Mode.. If it is a Boss Amp with a cooling fan , I would say the cooling fan motor has gone...
We had a similiar problem with a Friends Boss amp, Lubricated the Fan motor and all was good again..

( So much for me not Helping)

Ah yeh, i didnt read past 'squeeling noise'

Well if thats the case then check out the fan. Although the lack of fan wouldnt cause the amp to shutdown straight away.

possibly power wires shorting out. is the wiring all clean at the amps?

How long till it cuts out? 1 second? 1 minute?

More symtpoms plz

The AMC Stereo Doctors do need more Info on the Problem.
1. Is it a Really loud Squeel through the speakers??
2. What Model of 1200W Boss Amp, is it one that can be found on Strathfield Website?
3. Was the Amp working Prior to your install??
4. I hope your friend didnt sell you the amp as he has just bought one to replace it..

5. You say the Amp seems Ok, yet it goes into protection mode, You turn the Headunit on, the amp turns on , you get a Squeel and it goes into protection mode..
Is there a delay between the Headunit turning on and the Amp squeel ?
or is it instant??

Yeah, sorry fellas, more info....
going from memory (my car is outside and im too lazy to check) its a Boss Audio BA-4300. don't quote me on that though. it doesn't have a cooling fan on it. the squealing will begin as soon as the accessory power is put on, and the sound will cut out, with the amp switching onto protection mode in about 1 to 2 seconds. I'll sort out the power and RCA's and I'll get back to ya's if the problem persists. Cheers.

check your grounds

squealing is caused by rca's but u should also check ur grounds, as well as speaker impedence. it shouldn't be going into protection straight away. check that ur speaker/sub isn't causing a funny impedence on ur amp.

Turn the Gains down on the Amp to 0. Does it still kick into protection mode?? If yes Proceed to
1)Disconect the Speaker wires that the amp is powering, does it Kick Back into Protections mode ?? No then we have a Speaker wiring Problem
If Yes Move on to

2). Disconnect the RCA's going into the Amp... Does the Amp still go into Protection Mode ??
If Yes then I am likely to say Dead amp...

(Each time you do one of the Above.. Have the Power turned off, then turn it on and see. do not mess around with Cabling with your system on)...

Easiest way to fry ur rca tracks....

Or at least damage them so you get more and more engine whine.

Ah well...
