View Full Version : AWD power issue... darn car...

Hey all...
Getting this looked at this week, but just wanted to know if anyone else has this issue with their AWD.
I bought a Sienna Red AWD that turned out to be very bent (as in chassis bent) but it went like a scalded cat - put your foot down and you needed a neck brace at the lights. It also was very nice on fuel round town (11.6) when driven politely, had good throttle feel (felt nice and light and responsive).
I took it back (due to the fact that the body was bent) and got a perfectly straight white AWD.
Hmmmm... Vibration when taking off from the lights in 1st, heavy throttle, uses lots of fuel, doesn't pull very hard at all. In fact it seems to be having difficulty in keeping up with traffic some days.
Not fair.
Transmission has been serviced, new spark plugs, and a new standard air filter.
Weirdest thing is when the computer is reset, it goes like hell for the first 5 klms or so, then starts to act up again.
Grrr...

Strange, how bad is the fuel consumption of the white AWD?

That RED car must have been one of the Targa Tasmania hacks.
The White one is probably just an ex Hertz rental. :P

Fuel consumption on white AWD is struggling to get under 14.0 in traffic (whereas the red one would get 11.6 with ease).
The white one was ex Sydney Department of Public Works, whereas the red one had an unknown history (hits/repairs all over, bent chassis, no log books or manual)

AT least it would have been religiously serviced on the dot with Public Works. Can the dealer take switch off the learning function on your ECU for a week and see how it goes?
When I got my car it was doing 13L/100km, but a few months ago it came down to 11.7L/100kms where it's stayed ever since, I'm at a loss to explain what happened.

There ya go, you've answered your own question Heath.
The white car is used to a life of idleness.
Sure, once upon a time it thought it had to get up & go... and it did it too,
for like for about 5 days after getting offerred the position.
Then yeah, it talks to all the other fleet cars in the carpark and starts acting like them too.
Get into work at 8:30, smoko at 9:30, coffee break at 10:00, smoko at 11:00....

it almost sounds like the white was was FWD and the new one is AWD as the AWD always had much worse fuel consumption and where generally quite slower, but you would obviously know about it if it was a FWD instead of AWD so i have no idea

Nope, red was the old one, white is new...
Red was definitly an AWD, it had a rear differential
Magnette - very funny! :)
Joukowski - not sure about turning off the learning function, didn't think that they could...

Out of interest, did you buy that car from a dealer on the northern side of sydney?
heathyoung

Nope, a dealer in Newcastle, but it is possible that it may be the same car (they do tend to travel if they don't sell them).
Heads up on a Sienna Red AWD that goes well, but really is a POS with numerous badly done repairs (and rust in one of the doors - well hidden) as it didn't sell at the dealers here (afaik)

kl awd verada and i get the same mileage around twon - have had city mileage down to 13.5 give or take, and they are slower to take off, i just reckon it the ratio's of the gearbox.

My TL VRX AWD was getting ~14l/100km in traffic and was a bit of a slug (well handling, but a slug), but as it gets closer to 10,000km it's returning ~13l/100km and seems to be a bit quicker off the mark. The traffic and route doesn't vary much, so it's either settling in or change in climate with Spring coming on.

Funny... The red one must have had one of those 'freak' engines people hope to have...
It hauled ass in a serious fashion.
Ah well, I asked mitsubishi to fix it so I don't have to trade it in on a WRX (which I am thinking about doing.... mmmm....) he thought I was being funny.

my prob is the wife is a lead foot and doesn't know the definition of economy. i get around 13.5 around town - i hopped in the car last night (haven't driven it at all on this tank) and it said 16.2 - bloody hell. i still think it's a bit sluggish off the line (have 12,500 on the clock). but i dunno - still think it'll never be as quick as a standard magna off the line - a bit heavier obviously

AWD equals a bit heavier and more drivetrain losses. Now, does anyone know what the losses are for the FWD versus the AWD?

Well,
I got it back from Mitsubishi, they say there is nothing wrong... But all they did was check the codes on the MUTII... This is the first step in their troubleshooting list.
1) MUT-II Diagnosis codes - Are codes output - Yes - refer inspection chart NO - GOTO 2
2) Check the injectors for operation sound - NG - check injector circuit OK - GOTO 3
3) Check the ignition timing - NG - Check Crank angle sensor - OK
And so on...
Grrr.
Also, took my wifes car in and the fuel tank that was replaced 16 months ago is leaking - they won't do it under warantee.
Better built better backed my ass.

Would have been cool if you had dyno'd the Red vs White!! :P

Tell me about it - try finding a 4WD dyno in Newcastle... There isn't any.

Would it be worthwhile to take the cat out and check it? Some others have had some problems with them, solid chunks etc.

So I have heard - the interesting story with the AWD Supercharged magna where it was restricted by 25% + fuel filter dodgy... makes you think -
Especially with a highflow cat $200 from Philcom.

I would try to give it a visual inspection first. If that is possible, spose it would depend on the honeycomb density.

I have a KJ2003 AWD Verada!
When it had 15.000 it was slugish of the mark and did 13.5Lt /100 km in the city.
Now it has 32.000 km on it and it is not slugish!!!!!!!! with 12.6 /100 km in the city.
Found that the driving has a lot to do with how many Ltrs I get per 100. I drive it Smoothly and dont play too much with the trip-tonic!
AWD are slower ........... but on wet roads .......... nothing come close!!! (For an AUS made car).

If it makes you feel any better - I get about 15L /100km for my AWD sports (has done 2800k,) but admittedly I drive it like a maniac - maybe I'll be good for a month and see what the best I can do is - also short trips ruin the economy I think...
Are you taking the figures from the trip computer or from actual mileage vs amount of petrol used?
heathyoung

Trip computer.
I think it is in the exhaust - I started it up and the cat (or internal exhaust components) rattled (my wife noticed it this morning).
Will get it checked soon...

Have you changed the intake snorkel? I pulled the snorkel off my wagon and economy went from nearly 15L/100km to to about 13.6L/100km according to the tripcomputer. And this is with the wife useing it for work around town on 91 octane, and carrying the 2 prams. Not only that but you can tell that there is a serious restriction with it on, compared to it removed. EZYboys CAI is VERY tempting now.

My AWD is on 10.8-11.3 range depending on the temp outside, a/c, traffic etc. I gave her a hard time on the rounds last week and crept upto 12.2L. I have found absolutely NO benefit in economy or power from using 95 or 98RON with my current mods or stock motors.
Do you use the a/c a lot? I notice hills kill my economy (der) - but even gradual ones. Time for a flowed TB, zorst and CAI me thinks.
What about your tire pressure?

Yep - I agree... A/C is barely used (I usually drive with the window down)
>What about your tire pressure?
38-40psi... So not too low.
I will have to catch up with you on the TB methinks...

I just swapped the TB out with one from EZ Boy and I can notice the difference in throttle response when you get rolling from a standing start. You also really don't need to have the throttle down much at all when cruising around town.
Only changed it yesterday (with the attendant funny noise from the ICS  ) so don't have any real performance / economy figures yet but have made sure that I am keeping all my fuel dockets and manually checking against the changes I am making to see how everything goes.
Just got to sort out now what the best form of CAI will be for the car and debating whether or not to install the alloy fuel rail spacers.

In theory, any restriction caused by the snorkle would be mitigated by the snorkle scooping in cold air rather than hot air from the engine bay.
