View Full Version : Detailed The Car, Took Nearly 10 hours!!!
[TUFFTR]

hello everyone, well i got up @ 10 today and detailed the car, well, im sure its called detailing.
all together took nearly 10 hours including debadging.
and i have a new found respect for car detailers, as my hands and arms are absolutly killing me.
i also recommend to EVERYONE here to use a clay bar after washing, i thought my car was clean after 13 years of regular washes. how wrong i was.
using it on the roof, after just a few rubs, the clay bar had turned green, thats how dirty it was!
then i used the scratch remover, that thing does *** wonders, i was simply amazed.
all done by hand mind you.
then a quick spray of meguairs hot shine tyre spray, and goddam the car looks bloody awesome.
$97 and about 10 hours later the end result is marvelous (sorry about the pics it was getting late, ill take some tomorrow when its sunny:))
Clay Bar - 10cm of roof! (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/magna002.jpg)
Magna - finished! (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/magna004.jpg)
mmmm no more swirls (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/magna010.jpg)
it was a long and painful day but its all done, now all i have to do is rebadge (thanks to snu2 and temagna for the badges, well appreciated).
i hope some other people can take something out of what ive done today. anyhoo, im bloody starving and dinner is being served!!!
comments ppl!

Awesome end result. I've been using meguires gold class shampoo and wax combo since the beginning of the year and am pretty happy with the results - but starting to get some very fine swirling in the clear coat.
Been thinking about trying out the clay bar and scratch X for a while now....... but I know first hand how long it can take...... so I might just wait til I'm on holidays in October.

well i used meguiars scratct remover 2.0, retails @ $25, and takes alot of elbow grease to get a good result, actually, the swirl remover worked so well i didnt need to polish it (cause it has a polish in built aswell.
im very happy with the results for a noob like me!
and yes black beard, the clay bar will open your eyes when you use it on bonnet/roof/boot and it turns green, its amazing stuff

Awesome finish mate
Now for a detailing noob like myself who is wanting to give the car a good going over this weekend ready for MM05, like you have inspired me to do, can you please list the products that you used in the order that you used them :)
1. wash
2. meguiars scratch remover 2.0
3. clay bar
4. meguairs hot shine tyre spray
Is that it?
p.s. What the hell is a clay bar and what is it meant to do?
lol thanks

lol, well yes 8 hours to do that, and 1 and a bit to debadge, so 10 all up.
hyperTF, a clay bar, properly used gets off all the contaminants and pollution you cant actually see on your car, if you really want to understand what i mean do this;
get a frezzer bag (really thing type of plastic bag)
put your hand in it
and touch the paint on your car, after a wash, you will notice it feels like sandpaper.
what the clar bar does is lift all this crap off the paint, leaving it feeling like glass, and i kid you not, it bloody works.
about $35 from super cheap.
excellent product indeed.
ok now;
wash
Clar bar (to remove crap from paint before opolishing)
scratch remover 2.0
polish.
then the tyre spray
now i did not polish my car, why? well after all the treatment i gave it today, it felt so nice, i felt spending another hour polishing would be a waste.
also, hyperTF, if you get in quick super cheap auto has a meguairs gift pack, has the tyre spray, polymer sealant, wheel cleaner, dash and trim foam (AWESOME ****), and soft wash gel, for about $50, now, considering the tyre shine retails for nearly $20 itself, the pack is worth getting. all up i spent about $100 but its stuff which is top quality and should last for ages to come.
tyre shine is supposed to do 50 tyres, its a big can hehe:P
just make sure you buy some foam pads, and have some terry toweling cloth on hand as you'll need a bit of it.
hope this helps dood!

ahhh well seeing as you live in SA, itll take you 8 hours to get here, 8 hours to detail, and 8 hours to get back, got a spare 24 hours?
when you have a day off work and want to do something productive, detail the car its really worth the hassle

mate i cant even imagine how hard that must be, i did one and im about to collapse on the keyboard, yeah i gave inside a good clean aswell, i usually use armourall, but this dash and trim care stuff absolutly craps on that, it leaves the vynal with a wet appearnce and leaves a tip top smell in the carinside - stock as a rock (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/magna024.jpg)

lookin good mate, but i would wanna seal it for extra shine n protection, but looks like a top job mate
im halfwy thru my car, swirl remover 2.0 is doing SFA for it lol, the guy who had the car before must hav used a scourer or sumthing because the paint is scratched/hazed all over the place, ive done the rear and boot, drivers side of the car, front of the car nad the bnonnet, still got one side of car and roof to do (wish i had a day off when it wouldnt rain, and my GF would let me clean the dam car!)
i shall be investing in a RO Buffer soon, with better polish to combat these scratches, im not particularly happy with my shine either
[TUFFTR]
20-09-2005, 05:52 PM
well when i used 2.0 first it did sweet F.A aswell, i said to myself this is **** i want my money back, i tried it again but this time really rubbed hard into the paint, virtually until i broke a sweat, then i saw results, im pretty sure if the swirling is more serious use the meguairs fine cut polish, if you take note on the 2.0 bottle theres a graph indictaing the "cut" level, 2.0 is around 3/10, a fine cut is about 5-6/10, and a medium cut is around 8/10, you might want to use those.
well i have nothing else better to do with my time, so what the hell ill go polish the car (in myabe 10 or so  )
cheers dude

Ur Polish first and then wax. Do it soon so you get a better and good shine that will be sealed by the wax. Its really a lot of hard work. I recommend you to do the rear first, then the roof, then the doors and lastly the bonet.
Cheers!

Then it was those really windy days recently in melbourne, car was covered in dirt and crap. So I gave up. 3rd week running with no clean. Tell you what, the rain keeps it pretty clean :D

just used the wet look polymer sealant and mate it make a huge difference
example, bonnet has been resprayed, front gaurd has not, i could easily tell the bonnet had been resprayed as it was shiny, and the front gaurd was a duller color and full of swirl marks, NOW, im getting to the stage where the front gaurd resembles the bonnet, its magic stuff i tell ya.
oh and btw dood im not blowing $40 on wax, the turtle wax will do me fine

trust me you will not be "blowing" $40 on Megs NXT Wax... its like the other stuff you have used, u need to try it to see for yourself.... this stuff is magic... I have 3 - 4 shelves full of detailing products, spent $XXXX (sh!t loads) on waxes/polishes etc over the years and NXT is my all time favourite.... well i highly recommend it and dont think you would be wasting money, however i havent used this turtle product u are talkin about so it is hard to say which would be better... i was turned off turtle a long way back, never used any of it since, might give it a try... one wax i got wasnt bad and that was Mothers Premium Wax, it was a promo with a matchbox car at supercheap, promo had finished and they were clearing the stock.... $5 BARGAIN!!
when waxing with any of these products i recommend:
-make sure car is clean
-park in garage or complete shade and allow car to completley cool
-using a yellow round megs hand applicator pad (~$4 for 2 at supercheap, autobarn etc) apply the wax (NXT etc - whateva) sparringly to the whole car
-MOST IMPORTANT STEP (well it think it is) allow applied wax to completley dry. U will know when it dry by running your finger across it and it wipes the powder clean from the paint and leaves absoluley no trace of wax left.
-Use a soft terry towelling or microfibre cloths (x2) (i prefer the Kenco Twin Pack of Microfibre cloths from autobarn - $14.99 for the 2 and one is yellow, one is blue... the best cloth i have ever used, have about 10 of them) use one to remove 99% of the dried wax from the entire vehicle then use the fresh one to give the car a thorough wipe over..
-BINGO!! you have one nicly waxed paint job

I've been using the Meguiar's waxes for the last two years and I've been very happy with the results. I just got some NXT and I've got to admit it's pretty impressive. It's definitely not a waste of money, particularly on dark coloured cars.
You should always wax after you have polished the car. Remember that by polishing you are removing any protection the paint had. The wax will protect the paint from the sun and other contaminants. You only need to polish the car 3-4 times a year but you should be waxing every couple of weeks depending on where you keep your car.
Your car is looking excellent. I love how the deep coloured cars look after a good detail. You might also want to splash out for some Meguiars Quick Detailer. It's excellent for giving the car a quick clean in between details (really good for removing bird poo). It gives the car a just detailed look without all the effort but it should only be used on a relatively clean/waxed surface. I can't live without the stuff. Luckily I have a 5 litre container of it. :D

Meguiar's #9 (Swirl Remover 2.0) IS a polish, with light abrasives to cut down the swirls.
If you want to use #2 (Fine Cut), you better have a rotary, or orbital buffer at least. You will be at it for far more than 10 hours if you want to use if by hand.
If you haven't sealed/waxed your car yet, do it ASAP. Wash your car again or use QD. Have the people on DP taught you nothing? No point polishing if you don't put some protection on it. Give some credit to MRJUCY too.
All that money would only buy you a can of Souveran so I would say you're still scratching the surface. There is a lot more beyond what SuperCheap offer. Maybe for your next car.

I'm pretty sure the polymer sealant is a polish/wax combination, so you don't need to wax. You'll be surprised at the difference if you do though. I used to use the carnauba wax (from Meguiars), it gave it a lot more depth.
You can go over board though. :D

Is that the standard TR steering wheel in your car?
You can only get quick deatiler in the small bottles but Final Inspection comes in 5L containers. I just pour off what I need into a QD spray bottle.
I've definitely seen the 5L container in a SCA but Meguiars stuff is a bit funny cos different shops will carry different products. I'm finding it really hard to find some of the new NXT stuff. Apparently they have 5 star and 4 star dealers. I'm not too sure how it works.
That final photo looks awesome. 8 hours well spent.

thats the funny thing, after caring for it for years you wonder how so many bloody scratches come about!.
but those days are over thanks god, well least not for a few months.
and blackVRX yes thats the standard wheel, pretty much everything in that car is stock.
ill be changing wheels early next year, get the sporty feel going.
and well yeah my dad took some shots this morning, i think he's more wrapt about the paint then i am, and yeah well the shots came out awesome, not bad for a $250 camera.
o and to anyone interested super cheap auto now has an exclusive line of boher ( i have no idea how to spell it, i think it swedish) polishers/buffers. instead of one large pad it uses 3 seperate ones that look like donuts, just lettin yas know incase anyones in the market for one. i havent got exact specs yet but am told this is premo stuff.
oh and the seatcovers rock, $35 retail at super cheap, they give the car an eeny amount of street cred, ......ahh....sorta

yeh mate, i swear he used a scourer to clean the car, meg #9 did SFA just get rid of the minor swirl marks and hazing, parts aroudn the car have been resprayed, basically nearly eveyrthing accept the doors and roof have been resprayed, and not well (bit of sand on bonnet stuck in, the prep work on the bonnet sucks and the body kit is orange peel city)
the car looks shiny now, but upclose the paint lets it down, wil lget osme pics on w/e
