I am buying a 2001 TJ Magna Executuve. It is advertised as a 3.5 but it has not 3.5 badges on the front side guards where I think they should be. How else can I tell if it is in fact got a 3.5 engine.

not sure on the numbers but on the air intake black where the air filter should have 3.0 or 3.5 or 6g4 or somthing like that

VIN number should have 6G74 in it sumwhere

The VIN won't have the engine number in it, the engine number however will. The VIN will go somthing like 6MMTJ8D42XXXXXXX
TJ = model
8 = engine / trans (V6 / auto)
D = type (Exect, Advance)
42 = Sedan
So a VIN will tell you, just get the number and ring a Mitsi dealer and they can break it down.

The 3.5L has that stamped on the black rubber bend which joins the air flow meter to the throttle body. The 3.5L has only one air resonator on that bend and none on the snorkel at the front of the air filter box. The 3.5L has two vac solenoids in front of the plenum.

If you are buying a 3.5L exec, the number in position 6 (the number '8' in the example) of your VIN number as described above should be either 7,8 or 9.

Of course this won't correspond if the previous owner has changed the engine, in which case the methods in the post above will have to make do.

The 3.0lt engine sits lower down by a very obvious amount, if u can put a 3.5 next to it and have a look

The engine number on the block of a 3 Ltr is 6G72 and a 3.5 Ltr is 6G74, I have done a conversion.

or you should just test drive both 3.0 and 3.5, lol

If it is a dealer the engine number should be on the form that has the details of the car on it with the price...

The engine number should be printed on the certificate of rego (as in nsw) if 6g72 its a 3.0L, 6g74 is 3.5L.
