My 6G72 3L 12 Valve V6 (Mitusbishi Verada) i have worn valve stem seals. I was wondering if a full rebuild or just a refresh of the top end would be the go. The Engine has clsoe too 195,000Km and i feel will last till 350,000km. The valve stem seal only annoy me cause at take off or or start up they blow a bit of blue smoke, and considering i spend alot of time in stop start traffic its annoying and polluting to other road users. I need to do some other things to the car such as new cat and rotors all round. would like the expeirence of others on this forum as to whether leaving the seals leaking will cause any major problem? any other input on this particular engine or vechile it is in would be appreciated.

6g72 engines are cheap. Call a few wreckers and see how much one of them are.

Valve seals are about $400 to get done.
They dont really do any damage when worn, some actually say it helps lubricate inside your valves a little better (dunno just what i've heard). The most damage will be done to your wallet having to buy more oil all the time :P.

You could always do the option im doing. Twin turbo dohc :D Mine is starting to blow a bit of smoke at start off from sitting for a bit, and mines unly just clocked over to 165,000 :( A rebuild of the top end wouldnt set you back that much. Less than a grand, but considering the kms done by ur car, id say a full rebuild would be good for it

Just get the seals changed, it is not hard, you do not have to spend much and the heads do not need to come off.
Mine did this at about 120000k's, is on about 145 now and since done no issues at all

What I meant was that I am planning on putting the twin turbo dohc engine into my car within the next year

If i was to replace the engine what would be a good alternative, would the 3rd Gen 3L fit? is it any better than the 2nd gen version?

im in the same boat, the TR when starting has alot of blue smoke coming out, similar to Maccy D, the mechanics coming out soon so he can verify this, in any case it bother me, cause my parents pay for it :P
no-one here has used something like NULON stop smoke? was thinking of getting a bottle but thought, how can a $10 bottle of oil fix a $400 job :doubt:
if the engines are cheap and worse comes to worse ill tell the mechanic to slap a new one in there

I bought some stop smoke, worked for about 10 minutes lol.
On the 4 cylinder its a small job, on the 6 its heaps bigger which is why it costs twice as much hehe.

i think that a engine conversion to the SOHC 24 V or DOHC 24 V will work out to be the best, more power and a newer eninge what could be better?

Unfortunately the engine from the 3rd gens wont fit, as we have our gb's on the drivers side, whereas teh 3rd gens have it on the passenger side. You can put the n/a dohc 3L from the diamante in there. Talk to KillBilly. He did it

Just get them replaced, no two ways about it, if it's a good motor in all other ways, keep it and just do what needs doing, mitsubishi motors are generally quite reliable.

yeah it is a good engine serviced meticulosy and driven properly, ie no short trips, no revving when cold, no idling to get temps up when cold, and driven with a few revs once and a while to keep cobwebs at bay. But i think i can deal with a bit of smoke at takeoffs and the embarrasment infront of other along with having to fill her up with oil because of it. Image to me isnt worth the 400 dollars.
its definitely not worth replacing the entire engine cos the valve stem seals are dead. mine were passing oil for a while before i got them done. it isn't urgent. but the extra oil burning will crap up your plugs much quicker and you'll be having to top up all the time -and you WILL have to get them done eventually.
a smoking vehicle also can attract cops.
i'd get it done at the same time as some other work just to save the hassle of going in twice.
