It's not what ya know, it's who ya know right? I think I've found my preferred mechanic here. Worked with this guy for 2 years at a dealership so I know his work is spot on and he knows his ins and outs of cars, as he's had 25 years experience.

Firstly I had my handbrake adjusted today, he had the car for an hour or so, did a great job, cost me a 6 pack. 10$.
Also, remembering my belts are not far from being due for replacement, thought I'd see what damage my wallet was gonna suffer.

Here's my Quote.
Cost for Timing belt and all external belts including fitting for 350-400 bucks! All genuine Mitsu belts too. Mitsu quoted me 500$+ (from memory, probably more) for timing belt and fitment for it alone.
Think I'll book it in! What other prices has everyone come across?

i got timing belt and drive belts and all new pulleys for about $480, so yeah your price seems pretty reasonable

I know this is not a smart question but I still have to ask anyway. How do we know when to change it? Every 100000kms? Seems like an expensive thing to change but heck if it must be done I do it.

My handbook says at the 90,000km service, but yeah 100,000km is the general timing belt change interval, i wouldnt go much past that, they're an important belt!

I had my timing belt replaced, as well as my water pump and fuel filter...all for $450!!
Cheap as chips!!!!!!!

Have to go back to get the drive belts done though, I dont think they should cost too much....

I was bored and emailed a quote to LubeMobile.com .......for a drive belt replacement.

They quoted $99.80 .....

Is that a reasonable price? Just curious....

That's not bad if it includes belts as well.. stick with that I reckon. I was quoted $99 with genuine belts, I don't use the after market ones.

100,000 kms is the general change for the timing belt, and it usually costs about $400-$500

dont goto dealerships, they will rip you off. find a good mechanic and stick with them.

nexus the reason its so expensive and important is because its so hard to get to, most of the cost is labour - and if you dont replace it and it breaks, there is a good chance the valves will smash into the pistons...which isnt worth a 30 buck belt =)

i have a 99 magna which needs to be done very soon, more than likely the end of the year.

So is $99.80 cheap for a drive belt repalcement?

They (LubeMobile) said it includes parts and labour........

I will have to ask my mechanic as well and see how much he will charge.

Considering that I got my water pump, timing belt and fuel filter all done for $450, I think I should give him a heads up as well.

Point taken, as I have reached 170kms its time to have a pro to look at it. When I was driving my old car I didnt even cared about the belts. Now that I am driving this car, there is so much to look after lol. Problem with my Mech is he is lame, going on with a gambling habit has made him from a cheap good mechanic to a blood sucker.

Any other suggestions? Auto Masters? Auto Tune? Auto Barns? or just plain old Mitsubishi?
One thing advantage about these shops is they are certified in some way and does gurantee the work. Does anyone here change the belts themselves? Or thats really too advance job?
lol, I used to tear apart Jet fighter A4 Skyhawks but a Magna is too difficult lol.

Ryde Motor Group (ex Mitsubishi dealers) quoted around $800 for 100,000 service plus timong belt, Parramatta Mitsubishi quoted around $750 for same thing and then rang back later and changed quote to $526 after I had said that I would take it to Lubemobile at Silverwater.
Took it to Lubemobile anyway for $450 including everything.
It's cheaper Labour rate if you take it to their premises.

I might just jump in the "Golden Bullet" and go to lubemobile up here on the North Coast I'll be lucky to get change out of $600 - $800.
