I grabbed this off of the wheels website and blew it up, I am 99% sure it is the new 380.
Oh, if it is, then it is sexy as!!!
Edit: put in a photochop with some wheels.
Edit: there is a blue one in the background as well on the "fight back" pic, I thought it was something else at first. How is that, mitsu's taking up the cover of "Wheels" about time I say!!!

holy sh*t! it HAS to be that! And those lights certainly look exactly like the ones in the pic posted in the Courier-Mail today (from the other thread about first driving impressions).
Looks pretty much identical to a TL VR-X front bar too, so my question is, is that a VR-X model?

Looking at the lines of the car I have to admit it has very sleek shape about it, very easy to do up I would imagine, yummy, I think I will have to buy one.
On the front page of the newspaper today. Judging by everyones responses seems like its been given the thumbs up. Now all you pessimist before are wrong. lol . Though the pic looks like the VRX version I'm sure.. wonder what the base models would look like. This one looks damn sporty tho..

Yeah it looks like a VR-X, the GT is very much the same looking. They didn't say the sport models where any different in power to the base, so i assume they are all the same.
Best thing- steering wheel controls std across the range and great design
Worst thing- No twin exhaust

It looks like the perfect sized car! Not too small and unsafe and not too big and sluggish. All with a huge interior (apparently bigger than Commodore and Falcon?) I think I'll buy 2 wheels mag. One for safe keeping (wrapped up) so I can say I have the original review of the 380 when I end up owning one, and another one to actually read etc.

It's no wonder Japan liked the aus version better than the US Galant - it's a massive improvement. Actually, without the boulay grill it almost looks a bit new lancerish - only better.

looks very new lancerish, esoecially around the headlights where they meet the front bumper, also the grill is very much like the lancer vrx's new one...
i can also see a bit of mazda 6 in it, around the foglights at the front, looks very similar to those on the first series mazda6 luxury sports...
me likes!! looks better than the TL/TW magnas as the fornt bumper sticks out from the headlights, the whole thing isnt flush like before

Yes the sunroof is std fit on the upper models and I think the VR-X too.
Is that sunroof standard or an option??? be awsome if it came standard.
Sunroofs are never standard on base model family sedans. Would be good tho lol The 380 should have probably the best power to weight ratio now along with the 173kw Sonata, and I think it's going to have about 350nm of torque so the base model 380 will have more torque than even the Sports spec Commodore (SV6) along with less fuel consumption, despite a bigger capacity engine and of course less drive-train loss! I hope they LSD is on the cards and the turning circle is adequate. They've got the styling right which is the most important part. If the handling/turning circle is good and the traction is sufficient, we have a WINNER!

Apparently the interior is perhaps the best aspect of the car and what they have worked on the most. Interesting to see what it turns out like. Perhaps Diamante1 who has actually seen the cars can shed some light in the interior direction and if it's competitive and modern.

i kept saying that everyone shouldnt judge the car untill they see it completely un-masked...
HERE HERE . Allot of people were casting fast judgement on the 380, when they hadn't seen the final product. If that's the styling of the model they are going to release, AWESOME, because I think it looks great, MMAL have delivered.
But its not over yet, the Rear has to look smooth, and the car has to drive well, be fuel efficient and have plenty of grunt to spare, that’s a big ask, But I believe MMAL can deliver. With all the R&D they've done, and all the Engineering goodness they've used on the 380, I think the 380 could be a real winner, they just need to keep driving a that marketing campaign, they need to get some good reviews and talk this car up. Which so far they’ve done well
***MMAL subliminal message**** "you want this car, your life is pointless with out this car, this car is desirable and you must have it, buy it, buy it now"******

I think the pic on the Wheels cover is a VR-X, there are no body kits like the TJ VR-X, the sports models have different bumpers and such like the TL series.
The rear send is very square, the pic Mitsi released when the announced the name with the 380 badge under the tail light is the 380 base tail lamp. I dont think they've done a hell of alot different to the rear from the Galant. The GT and VR-X have clear lamps and have a std bootlid spoiler much like the current Maxima spoiler (the 380 accessory spolier is also very similar). The top of the clear tail lights stick out from the the body so they are inline with the spoiler, kinda hard to explain but you'll know what I mean when you see one.

I recall comments on John Mellor's Go-Auto website of the 5th April 2005 about the styling reaction to the PS41 as it was then called.
"The first styling clinic in June 2002 involved 251 Commodore, Falcon, Camry/Avalon and Magna/Verada owners reviewing a left-hand drive Galant, the vehicle upon which Mitsubishi’s new model is based and with which it shares 30 per cent of its components.
Compared with AUIII Falcon, VXII Commodore, TJ Magna and the previous-model Camry, PS41 easily scored the highest ‘first preference’ for initial styling impressions.
After an intensive "Australianisation" program to distance the local vehicle from its US sibling and to make it appear sportier, the first iteration of the revised styling again achieved strong clinic results in mid-2003.
However, Mitsubishi says the final styling clinic - held in Sydney in July/August 2004 and involving 285 Commodore, Falcon, Camry/Avalon and Magna/Verada owners – produced the strongest results ever achieved for a new Mitsubishi product.
Compared with BA Falcon, VYII Commodore and the current Camry – PS41 topped the ‘first preference’ score, and also scored first in all key image attributes: sporty, agile, prestige, sophisticated, stylish, expensive, sleek and futuristic.
Mitsubishi says more than 70 per cent of respondents also ranked the smaller PS41 as ‘just right’ in size.
The Australian PS41’s styling has been further tweaked following clinic feedback and is now ready for production."
Seeing the photo of the 380 today, it's easy to see why the car was so well received.
I'd have to see the rest of it and of course drive it, but right now I'd like to buy one!

Woohoo, I started a big thread here!!! :D
On another note, I just scored myself a job, I am having a great day today.
heydude,
Congrats on your new job!
... and yeah, I like the looks of the new 380 too - can't wait to see one of you guys mod it !!!
Does this now mean we need a new forum section (4thGen or 380) ???

I think we should make a separate forum altogether for the 380 to differentiate it from the Magna. This might also help in the public differentiating between the Magna and the 380 and therefore increasing the 380 resale value and hence sales of the 380 and the future of Mitsubishi. We could incorporate an AMC link on the 380 forums and likewise a 380 link on the AMC forums.
I don't think it's fair otherwise. I know I don't call a Hyundai Getz a Hyundai Excel. And when the Toyota Avalon is replaced with a new car with a new name, I certainly wouldn't be calling it an Avalon. I think we need to differentiate between the 2 because they are 2 completely different cars. If anything, the 380 is more of a Galant than Magna. The whole point of changing the name to 380 and releasing an-all new car was to go away from the "Magna" name and image so i think we should respect that and do the same.

I have to agree, it needs to lose the magna name to succeed and build it's own class.
But we could also change it like Tim'e said and call it the "Australian Mitsubishi Club".

As discussed on an ancient thread, I don't agree about changing the clubs name to "Australian Mitsubishi Club", for one, it will create an influx of Lancer owners, Mirage owners and the likes.
I agree with everybody else that it looks good in the pics
just hope the turning circle is better than our magnas :)

Did anyone read Ged Bulmers comments?
"G'day, welcome to Wheels on-line. If, like us, you’re a big fan of local cars, raise a glass to Mitsubishi Australia's new full-size sedan, the 380. The Magna replacement almost didn't make it to the assembly line, but we're glad it did. Our exclusive test drives of the four key models in the 380 range prove Falcon, Commodore and Camry can’t afford to rest on their laurels. For drivers with more mischief in their eyes, the awesome rally-bred turbocharged all-wheel drive Lancer Evolution is back - this ninth iteration featuring more power, less weight and loads more fun! If you want your driving experience to be a little less sensory, take a look at our first-drive of Porsche's Cayman S coupe. Whatever your preferred cylinder count or marque, you're guaranteed not to feel shortchanged by the latest issue of Australia's top selling motoring magazine."

right..... so wheels magazine photoshopped it eh? I don't think so. Only the very last one is some poor attempt at making it white but the rest are real. There are ppl on this forum who have seen the 380 in real life and can confirm this is what it looks like.

i dont know were to begin..
take into consideration that these pictures are on the FRONT COVER of a magazine soon to released TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
Im damn sure Wheels magazine would not try to claim a photoshopped image to be real when the car is being released the same day
hmm lets get hypothetical here...im standing in front of a 380 looking at it with my own 2 eyes, but in my left hand i have a copy of wheels magazine. the picture is completely different.
this would send wheels' credibility down the toilet. bearing in mind wheels is a buisness, what kind of buisness would try to pass off a photoshopped image on their front cover, when the car can be seen in flesh in just a matter of days waiting.

I really hope you're right... I think with a big influx of younger buyers of Magna's and Verada's here in Aust lately, someone could do damn well... especially MMAL... I just hope some of the many guests we have had today have been some of them having a look to see what our reaction might have been and what a potential market there is.

Rarely do I buy a magazine, in fact, its been years. But, without exception I will buy the wheels mag with the 380. And yes, I'm excited. With seeing these pics I can say I love the car at a glance. I am waiting to see it in the flesh with hopes the interior and rear end are as classy as the front. Though I think I saw a pic of what the dash is meant to be and I pray it's not it, with gauges similar to the new lancer i think? I hope not. But, I'll be waiting with anticpation to see the lot. Also seeing it in the flesh will determine as to whether I cancel my plans of buying and modding a TH/TJ or if I have a stock 380 for a few years. At this stage i'm in favour of the 380.

yeah, from those pics, it looks like they did a very good job. i love that front bar -just right IMO -although its not the standard one i don't think, judging from sunroof and rims-it looks to be a non-base model variant.
with the newly revealed details, i adjusted my last photochop a bit to get a better idea on how it might look from a different angle than those 2 pics we have so far..
i like the orange colour- i also like the blue colour on the magazine cover too. looks like mmal have chosen a nice colour pallet for the 380.

Now there is a problem. Not you, Tom.. but the public will compare the Three-Eighty to the old Magna.
How to stop that?
Or, how to make it an advantage? ... this car is not the Magna. While not saying "this car is not the Magna" and all the negative stuff that is in people's heads about the old car.. we might say "this is a great new car from Mitsu Aus. and it owes some of its outstanding qualities to Mitsu traditions in family sedans, such as quiet ride, ample power, smoothness and economy."

It looks awesome, it shows just what MMAL can do when given autonomy from the rest of the group.
Most of Magnas were good looking cars, it was only the TL/W that was fugly because it had the Boulay grille bestowed upon it.
I'm glad the Boulay front is dead - 380 is damn fine

Yeah when I heard about some particular person from here trolling to other forums and posting up about the 380 I wasn't particularly impressed. Most of us here don't go about trolling forums. At the very least they should have posted the link to the Wheels magazine site, not a link to here. But anyway I guess it's just people getting too excited about a new car :P

it has a bigger interior then the ford falcon and the holden commodore, so it cant be that small... but if it is small on the outside, but huge on the inside, then thats actually a GOOD thing mate ;) best of both worlds

oh and again, the front bar is almost identical to the TW VR-X front bar, except for the grille part obviously. The lower part looks almost identical except the number plate holder thingy seems to be smaller on the 380 and doesnt protrude over the big air dam section at the bottom.

And same again, but these are rear shots, the 380 has these on VR-X and GT, clear lights with a small spoiler sticking out and the top of the lights stick out with it and a single exhaust pipe. The std models have to high mount light build into the bootlid.
I've also added A US Lancer pic coz the grille looks very much like the 380 LX grille.

Did nobody else see the ad on TV last night?
It was on during "The Rookie", I was on the phone so wasn't really concentrating until the very end.
At the very end a lancer drives into the centre of the screen and it's definately a 380 in the background (much like the wheels shot). It doesn't last for long, but the lack of centre grill bit and the mitsu triangle gave it away for sure.
From what I saw (Damn I wish I was concentrating) it looked nice.

-Dan
Is that the new 2.4l MIVEC ad for the new Lancer?
The second car when the Lancer pulls up is EVO IX and a wagon Sportback in the back ground.
Wheels magazine was meant to be out last Wednesday but it hase been title delayed for the 380 launch
Business Sunday had a interview with the going out CEO of MMAL, showed the production line, they got some pics of a car in production, the rear looks average (i like the 3rd gen rear) and the inside looks niice.
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14643
The rear of the australian 380 doesnt have the black bits arround each light, the light merges into the other light (e.g red into orance into white instead of orange, gap, red, gap, white).
P.S: If you understand that congrats.

VW Golf GTi has received rave reviews. However, I'm feeling quietly confident the 380 will win.
the golf GTi will get COTY... wheels have had nothing but praise for it everytime they write something about it.. would be awesome for the 380 to get COTY

Not so sure about that, Remember Golf range was eligible for last year's COTY, GTI is a model in the range and I don't think it meets the criteria of being substantially different.

just look at the stock airbox, i think it world be very accepting of a cold air intake, now that it looks as though they have gone away from the oval design, as im sure you all know is quite annoying..
all in all i think itlooks great and with over 65% of this car being all australian designed, manufactured and whatever that other word i can't think of is it will be VERY different from those galants, so everyone should just stop complaining.

Also...
* Are the front headlights tinted?
* The 2 tone rear bumper bar job looks heapers better than the limited edition TL VRX Attempt.
* Stock ridehight no longer has the 4WD look at the front :D
* Will the side mirrors automatically fold in when you press the remote control lock 3 times?? (The new Colts do this! - really cool!)
* Intergrated stereo :( Will this mean we'll have to do a BA Falcon style install at the bottom of the dash? (edit: OR do we get something like this as an option http://www.mitsubishicars.com/images/2006/gal/photos/large_3_in.jpg ???)

From "THE ADVERTISER"
Buyers stand in line for the 380
By BRYAN LITTLELY
26sep05
FAITH already has been shown in Mitsubishi's new Adelaide-built car, the 380, buyers ordering more than 2300 cars a month before it goes on sale.
The orders equate to almost 8 per cent of Mitsubishi's first-year 380 sales target of 30,000 cars.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia's corporate affairs director Paul Stevenson said the maker had been on a campaign to preview the car to fleet buyers.
"We've been getting feedback from them for some time and that program has been the reason for a very successful pre-ordering process," he said.
One buyer putting his faith into the 380 is Mutual Community state manager Eric Granger, who has ordered the top-of-the-line 380 GT.
"I wanted to get a new car and I arranged to come down here to look at it and straight away I thought it's beautifully done," Mr Granger said.
"Obviously, the GT model is going to be good to drive and the price will be very competitive.
"Three of the last four cars I've had have been Mitsubishis and they are fantastic cars.
"I reckon the 380s are as well appointed and will be as good to drive as European cars and they are half the price."
Mr Granger said as soon as he saw the 380 GT he thought "this will do me".
"One thing I know about this car is that there's not going to be anything wrong with it. There's too much riding on it," he said.
The covers come off the 380 on Wednesday and the official public unveiling will be at the Sydney Motor Show on October 13, the day the car goes on sale.

So your saying you had more than 600Nm at the motor!!!! lol I can almost garentee you had less than 600Nm at the engine.
Don't forget gearing multiplies torque and not power. Even in a gear thats 1:1 you still have the final drive/diff ratio.

i rekon it will be the biggest thing to happen for mitsubishi when they release the 380
with some other ppl that i have spoken to that drive holden ford etc etc they said magnas look awsome but they dont like them coz they rnt rear wheel drives and said if they was rear wheel drives they would ditch their ford or holden at the drop of a hat and get a magna/380
but wat i rekon would do MMAL the world of good is to make a RWD and make a V8 which is where most holden/ford drivers want these days so if they did that their sales would boom sky high i rekon

I don't believe the VR-X has got the same power as the base models. What were they thinking??? Slack mitsus probably didn't have time to develop a higher spec model. What was all the talk about close to 200kw for the sports model?
What a joke. Why would you spend the extra for the VR-X when it goes slightly slower than the base model? It was the same with the Lancer VR-X. Its only now towards the end of the current Lancer generation they put the 2.4L mivec in the Lancer.
Very dissapointing. Mitsu really need an up spec model to differentiate from the base models and compete with SV6 and XR6s.. :doubt:

Just remember back to the VN-VR commodore days when all the standard 5L V8's were 165kws no matter if it was a exec or a SS model the V8 all had the same power (HSV not included) BUT at least holden did offer later on in the VR model a 180kw option that was changed to a 185kw option with the VS but not many took up that option.
So give MMAL a bit of a break, ya cant expect a company with stuff all money left to develop a hi output engine for 1 or 2 models in the range, just yet.
The base 380 is there bread and butter car (the one that will sell the most) when and if that model sells well and MMAL start making some returns on there 600 million dollar outlay, will we then see the hi output version. :D

Be awesome to see AWD standard on all models other then the base model (gotta keep the fleets happy) and a turbo AWD Ralliart version with a minimum of 250kw
i dont care if im dreaming dont burst my bubble!! :D

The MMAL execs are keeping a lid of future developments so as to not have people back out on buying the current 380 and there by not bringing money back to the company to further complete future developments.
As most people probably didnt know MMAL actually started working on the ralliart magna when the 1999 TH model was out, the first early mechanical protoype ralliarts were done using TH sports as the base and the GTP magna racecars as development too and the company execs kept most of that quiet. :D
But having said that i have been told that work has started on the development of the AWD model of the 380 and at this stage the auto is the only one being developed (they bloody better do the manual this time, the 2 manual proto's they had of the TJ AWD were bloody good)
Time will tell what happens i guess mate. :P

If there is a Manual AWD VRX model (with upgraded power) I'll buy it.
Should be around the right time for me to get a new car (just bought a new one last year) so that could work out well. :D
Btw in the current issue of Wheels (pg 20) there is a little blurb about some things to come with the 2008 facelift.
196Kw MIVEC engine
new all alloy V6 with 3 sizes up to 3.5 (I speculate possibly 2.7, 3.0, 3.5)
and a new 6 speed auto.

problem with the 3.5 is that, although it would probably be a sweet engine, they would have to rename it 350, which is a lower number and it may not work out well as far as marketing goes

I don't see a problem having a car called 350.
Works for Mercedes and BMW

I just got back from the Brisbane 380 launch!!!
Totally awesome night - they put on quite a show too.
We also got to sit in the cars, open the bonnets, boot. Mitsubishi were VERY wise not to leave the keys in them however, as they might've had one less :D
WILL EDIT in more....It was extremely exciting and well worth the wait!!! :D
