View Full Version : Removing resinator on air intake pipe

I hav taken the top resinator off the air intake as many ppl have told me to do (and plug it up with a milk bottle cap).. But i just wanna know the pros and cons in doing this... Plus what does the 2 reinators do? My exhaust is louder and it seems to 'Backfire' more when the engine is slowing reving down... Any help on this would be great

Spelling it correctly would help. http://physics.kenyon.edu/EarlyApparatus/Rudolf_Koenig_Apparatus/Helmholtz_Resonator/Helmholtz_Resonator.html

That resonator is designed to smooth out the response in the torque range of the engine...
It also helps reduce induction noise by "resonating" at certain RPMs (freq). I think from memory that the resonator you are talking about is for a resonance around the 1500-2500 RPM range, (unless you are using an aftermarket filter). This will help (slightly) with fuel consumption when coasting around this rev range and help lower noise levels also. However, this has a slight negative affect when the rev range raises above 3500 rpm and becomes out of phase with the engine RPM, therefore inhibiting the intake of air (only a very small amount). It can be argued that by taking out the resonator you can get more output higher in the rev range, but a slight decrease in efficiency would result while coasting.
There sholud also be another resonator underneath the front intake (just before the air fiter box). This works in conjuction with the other resonator to help induction in the same way, and (judging by the physical size, however not sure) works around the same RPM.
Mitsubishi has spent countless hours fine tuning these engines to provide a balance between noise, low RPM efficiency and a smooth output. I probably would only recommend doing this if you plan on increasing the high RPM output, want a throatier sound, and don't mind using slightly more petrol.
Hope this helps out....

In short.
Try it.
If you dont like it, put it back.

Yeah... probably babbled on a bit about it... But I have noticed that a lot of ppl are complaining of flat spots in thier rev range, particularly when using aftermarket air filters. In theory, if the fiter improves airflow, then these resonators will increase their respective RPM resonance and therfore can create a "flat spot" low in the rev range (due to the resonance being out of phase at low RPM).

Ok So How do I go about Removing them and what specific Instructions do I need to secure New Bottle Cap??
and how do I go about Replacing If I do not like it ???

Take the resonators off, block the hole with something that wont get sucked through. Make sure it's airtight and then drive around and see if you like it.
If you dont, then just remove whatever it is you blocked the holes with and then put the resonators back.

:blah: First, you have to go down to your supermarket and purchase a 1 or 2 ltr of milk. Don't get a carton however, as this won't have the part you need. After you have chosen your milk (in a plastic container) pay for it at the counter and go back to where you were (before purchasing the milk).
From here, unscrew the cap and tip the milk out (you won't need this). Now throw the plastic carton over the back of your head (keeping the cap).
Remove the resonator by either using a flat tip, or phillip's head screwdriver (no.2), or by using brute force. Loosen the resonator's holding strap (shiny thing around the hole) and shove the cap in to seal it off (don't shove it too hard as it may fall into the intake).
Now tighen the strap, but don't over tighten (around 2 inch pounds) and yippie you have done it. You can now put the resonator in the shed....
If you notice a popping sound or a sharp change in the characteristics of the engine... then um.... you have probably sucked the cap into the intake plenum.
In theory :blah: If you do suck the cap into your intake at full throttle (highly probable) then it may get stuck in the throttle body (holding it at WOT). This may be a disadvantage if you are driving at the time...
p.s. The eninge must be running for you to notice a difference....

Nope, I had no Idea..You have explained it really well..
I am just not too confident about sucking the Plastic lid in through the intake.. That kinda scares me..

CR4P!!! Now I feel like an a$$hole...
Sorry man I thought you were taking the p1ss outta me...
Yeah.... That's why I wouldn't use a milk carton lid... But if you could use something with a flange at the top it would help..
If your intake is stock then taking the front resonator off (just remove the bit that goes from the airbox over the radiator) will have a similar affect if you want to see the difference (without risks).
This is no good for long term use however, due to the air box sucking in hot air from under the bonnet...

Large Mc Cormicks herb shaker lids are the best, they fit perfectly and have a wide tip on top... there is no way that sucker is getting sucked in. pity about my two pepper shakers with no lids..errrmmm...! lol
p.s. I know they are green but it is not hard to paint them... I just cbf ;) look at very top of image.

There another one underneath that that you can also remove.
I used a hole cutting drill part and mdf for mine, put a nut through the centre for easy removal and used the stock clips to fix it inplace as the mdf fits in the gap of then perfectly.

Ha ha removing the resonators doesn't do that much... but with the pod and zorst yeah, people know I am coming before I get there lol.

didnt even notice that its pritty big will it have a affect on my engine will it hurt it in any way did you take the bottom resonator of aswell and did you get and gains or differences

Well I cant really answer your question with any great expertise but so far to my knowledge it has not hurt my engine, I am still doubtful it can actually hurt anything. I have had both off for probably over 6 months now... I guess there is a slight change in tone to the engine bay on WOT but nothing special, as for gains or losses I cannot give you any diffinitive information i'm sorry. I think it is more of a rogue modification... a bit of take it or leave it... it's not going to do that much.

Only the 3 litre has 3 resonators as Hyper TF has pointed out(the other one is under the scoop) The 3.5 only has the one on top behind the MAS sensor.
