Damn Car.. Im having some problems.. serious noises in the front when i drive.. sounds like a stick in the spoke of a bike wheel when driving and get twice as loud when i back off.. massive single clunk when i turn and thats it.. its either CV`s or gearbox.. if its the box im def getting a ralliart box for the LSD but hope its only CV`s.. its a very bad noise.. im not stupid and done all the simple checks and to me i reckon its CV`s but i cant explain the clipping(like a straw in ur bike spokes) niose when driving...
Has anyone had CV problems and what was happening and what where costs to repair/replace..
Kinda sux as i havent driven my car hard for months and i just got it back from panel shop last nite and MM05 is only 3 days away..no it wasnt panel shop.. they are good family friends..
Any help will be a help..
Cheers

dammit, what bad timing!!! I have not had my CV's go fortunately but it sounds possible... maybe you could get it done early in the week.
Sorry to hear it mate. Good luck with it.
Edit: you could ask them to give it a quick checking over JIC they forgot something... family friend or not, no ones perfect.

Did you say you got a new front bar? What about the Air tray under the engine that fits to the bar - maybe they got that aligned wrong and its rubbing on something... Just an Idea.

Whats pisses me off even more is the freaken thing is only 3 months out of Factory warranty..

After that lurid powerslide out of the carpark at Lithgow a number of months back, im not suprised if it was the CV's Ego. You do give them a hammering!
I hope it isnt the box. The clunking around corners is usually a dead giveaway for CVs

my last car (a nissan pulsar) had shot CVs. turning would cause heavy clicking dependant on speed, which got worse the more you turned. so i'd say it is your CVs. i only had the outer ones replaced, but it only cost a couple hundred bucks. have a feel under there and see if the boots are split, and if theres grease in there.

Sounds similair to the noise I had a while ago... Have you checked your wheel nuts? Mine ended up being the wheel nuts weren't tightened properly and they basically stripped the housing and left a nice big oval shaped hole. Made a real clunking noise as I was driving and only got worse as time went on... End result was 4 brand new rims in from Japan (mine was still under statutory warranty) so it wasn't so bad... I would imagine it would be expensive otherwise tho...

Ive had a chance to look at CV boots and all seem fine.. no big holes.. lol

Possibly Inner CV 's ??
Jack up each the Front wheels, spin each wheel then turn the Cars wheels and spin them again this should give you an Idea of where the noise is comming from..

if u want the ralliart LSD u could just get a 2nd hand gear box with low kms on it and get the only part that difers frpom a standard TJ box to the ralliart,.... may work out cheaper for u.
i dont know the part number but i know someone on here does, wont mention his name to save from a bunch of PM's his way
EGO, find a cul-de-sac, or large carpark, hold full lock and keep driving, tell me what it now sounds like, even though the CV boots may not be split the joints can still be stuffed, and it can't be a broken tooth, as a CV joint does not have teeth like a gear, the spline does but that won't cause any problems. also, you lowered your car more recently did'nt you?

because you have lowered ur car even more im not surprised your cvs are ****ed

SORRY TO TELL YOU THAT IS THE SAME NOISE THAT CAME FROM MY GEAR BOX before it broke but mines a auto though, but the drive pinion is the same so it could be the diff, does it whine around 80 to 100 kays ( sound like a wheel bearing noise from the pass side) if so then it may be it, i feel for if it is cause it costed me $5000:cry:

flat shifting, only really necessary when racing is when you shift gears as quick as you can without backing off the throttle. This gives u a bit more of a burst when u go from gear to gear.
No back onto topic about ego's car being all broken

Possibly a counter weight on one of the arms that holds the engine/transmission mounts has moved (rotated) and is coming in contact with the box causing the noises to be transmitted into the chassis and boom in the cabin???
Or if you're really unluck a thrust bearing/washer?

Car hasnt moved today and wont till tomorrow lunch when it goes to the mechanics.. I havent driven the car hard for a few months.. was a big shock.. it was oerfect then with in half an hour this..
Yes car had superlows and now it an inch & half lower as of my new wheels 2 months ago.. Another member told me he had same problem and it wa sthe CV`s.. so i hope it is as MM05 starts wed.. :D
I thought cv`s as i get one massive clunk when i turn and i mean massive, feels like i ran over a brick(shakes whole car).. Then the noise started up front which sounds like a stick in the spokes of ur bike which makes me think its the box.. if it is Ralliart LSD here we come. :D
Car still drives as hard as when i nail it but a mess when it comes to tight(pulling out of a street) corners..
Well a professional inspection will tell the story tomorrow..

U thought about drive shafts? One of my friends had similar problems on his front wheel drive, made clunking noises, he had to have his driveshafts replaced, was caused by 'excessive overuse' as the garage put it....... ie. wheelspins ragging it and hammering the gears..
SYNRGY
25-09-2005, 09:20 PM
driveshafts are CVs mate on fwd mate
ego, if it did a massive clunk i highly doubt its cvs
cvs are loud but dont really cause MASSIVE clunks....thats what diffs do

it doesnt sound gearbox.... iv been thru 3 of them (on my 3rd) (oh and its a mirage not a magna but basically the same but on a smaller level) and the only noises iv herd when theyv gone is a whirring noise and then some grinding when the diff goes and then when the synchros die nothing really much happens except for a whole lot of grinding...
it sounds like the cv's to me. when you get them replaced, ask for the old ones, pull the boots off them and pull them apart, inside there will be a crown, some bearings and if yours are f'd then some shrapnel. just keep a rag handy cuz the grease is hard to clean.
goodluck and my the force be with you.
oh and if you have the moolah for a new box (if this is the problem) PM me cuz i know a few ppl that can get stuff really quick.

Ego, do you think it's related to the fact that it's MM05?
I mean, I did my steering last week...

I'm inclined to agree, CV's click, they dont clunk, a clunk that shudders the whole car i would be guessing the planetry gears are buggered.
Most commonly with cv's they click like a stone in your tyre (mainly when turning) and thats about, over time they get louder, eventually they will break but its not overly common

oh noes...
i had the SAME noise, getting louder with speed etc etc the other week...
sounded like cv's, or gearbox
because i lowered the car i thought my lsd was out of allignment causing the ticking noise..
was my conrod bearings.. only $550 to fix IF you get it checked asap... if its damage to the rod it gets expensive (engine out re-machining etc etc)
if you get them to check it & im wrong, feel free to abuse.... it wont be dear, they only have to take the sump off to have a look... if im right, ill pm you my bank acc details for monetary thanks...
good luck eegs.... GET IT CHECKED
dont wanna put a piston through that lovely block of yours now do you...
