I have for some time detected a strong fuel smell - particularly after I fill the tank. smell can last many days.
More recently I have detected a fuel leak which appears to be coming from the top of the tank and dripping from the front of the tank. I did note that the hose going into the fuel filter was sloppy and placed a small clamp on it however the problem is persisting.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Try the filler nozzle, since when you fill it up you only smell it then. Fill it up and then try and see if you can detect a leak coming from the filler tube where it connects to the tank.
Let us know.

Check the seal on top of the fuel tank for the fuel pump/sender unit, this is easy to get to by removing the lower part of the rear seat. If you have ever had a gauge sender replaced i will bet this is your problem, as its at the top of the tank it will only leak when you fill the car up?

Hope your car is still in warranty as the wife's TJ is having problems with a brand new tank from mitsubishi fitted 16 months ago that they refuse to replace.
Apparently the plastic tank develops a crack around where the filler pipe joins up to the tank.
$700 for a new one...
$250 for plastic welding
$??? for second hand.
Seems to be a problem with the TJ's...

John S..
There was a recall notice (in fact there were 2 recall notices about the fuel tanks) sent out to ALL TJ and KJ's regarding fuel tank problems.
If you are the original purchaser of the vehicle then Mitsubishi should have sent you the recall notices, if you are the second owner you will find a page in your owners manual that you can photocopy and fill out to notify Mitsubishi that you noe own the vehicle.
Ring the 1300.....? number and they will give you a fax number to send it to, and you can also ask them to fax ALL recall notices ever issued on the TJ / KJ.
Good luck, taking the tank out without a hoist is a bit of a bugger, about 2 hours...

I would be very interested in exactly what the recall entails as this is looking to be an expensive PITA.
If it is a recall item, it should be fixed without charge...

The TE-TW fuel tank is metal, not made of plastic!
although there were a few cars around TH-TJ that did have poor sealing/welding of sections of the tank, this was most likely just a bad batch as it is rare! i

Yeah - my bad, I assumed plastic.
Turns out it was a split on some spot welds on the tank.
They took the tank out, and silver soldered all of the joints and pressure tested the tank.
Cost about $400 all up (not happy Jan)

Thanks fella's.
I will let you know when the matter has been resolved however I suspect that it may be a faulty gasket under the fuel pump & sender assembly. A visual examination shows the it has not been fitted properly (ie. part of it is hanging out the side).
If so, the local Mitsubishi dealer who replaced the assembly some months ago (under warranty) has done a very sloppy job.
