water? mixed with the oil? apart from the fact they dont mix, i dont reckon it would be too good for your car...

i know they dont mix, but it appears water has leaked into the oil in the engine.

most likly is a cracked head, or if your lucky just a cracked or deterioted seal in between the heads and the block, means that the coolent running through the heads to cool them has found its way into the engine = not good, fix it soon as possible and dont drive the car unless you have to. You will alos notice your water level getting low if this is the problem after driving it for a while

ahh ok thanx for the info, and I have been noticing the water levels were always diminishing very quickly.

water leaking in the sump oil will turn the oil a milky colour
cause cracked head
most likely cause blown head gasket

well thats the problem, if you can rebuild the top end your self your looking at about $160 for all new gaskets to do it if thats all it is, if its a cracked head then you better look around at the wreckers for a new one, look around for hairline cracks on the outside of the head or take it to a mechanics and get it checked out pretty soon though cause if its just a gasket you dont wanna crack the head by over heating the engine, which is what willl happen if the water levels get too low

car makes a crunching noise also at startup and under hard acceleration, this sound right?

nope, dodgy starter motor most likly, hapens when the bearings dry out and eventually the mother of a thing will jam up and you wont be able to kick the car over to start up even with a steep hill, if thats the problem that is

Smokey ... If it is Crunching under acceleration then there is insufficient Oil being supplied... Get the car immediately checked out or you will be up for a New engine...
If it is a Head Gasket then it will cost approx $800 all up to get done Versus $2500 for a New engine...

prob not insufficient oil but more likly the oil is too lean as caused by the water leaking into the engine thus not lubricating everything properly

to answer the original question on where the water/coolant is coming from,
it would depend on which engine you are refering to, in a V6 i would suspect the usual cracked head/blown headgasket or unlikely but possible - a cracked cylinder wall.
In a 2.6L there is also a possibility that the coolant is getting into the oil through a corosion hole in the timing case.

That could also explain the crunch noise, timing chain maybe badly stretch and has worn a hole in the casing. Or in most cases the crunch noise could also be the bigend/main bearings, they tend to clunk/rattle when theres chocolate milk in the sump.

yeah, sounds to me like a cracked head gasket. might not be though

I work as a mechanic on bribie island Queensland, i've had too many magnas to remember and most days we have at least one hanging around the workshop (no kidding, we had three there today) i keep threatening to do the next head job (don't be dirty!) blindfolded, ok, i'm not bragging, i've just done sh**loads of them, NUMBER ONE RULE: DO NOT PUT THE HEAD BACK ON WHITHOUT GETTING IT PRESSURE TESTED AND MACHINED! i found that out early, THE HARD WAY, and i've had to fix quite a few other peoples stuff ups, we got one in the shop at the moment ,the guy paid someone a couple of hundred bucks to do the head gasket, it lasted about three weeks, wasted that money, now we putting a second hand (tested and machined with new valve stem seals) head on it, costing a lot more now but it WILL be ok, sure if you think you can do the job, by all means, do it, but take my advice, once you got it off, take it and get it checked and machined, YOU CAN'T ALWAYS SEE THE CRACKS. hope this helps
