View Full Version : Why such low reving?

Okai is it just my car or are all the 2nd gens like this.
In normal driving/accelerating I hardly ever go above 1500rpm, and when i give it a bit it still doesnt go above 2000.
I can put the foot down and get it to like 4gs if im lucky.
Cruzing on the freeway at 100ks it sits a 1000rpm.
So i just take it this car makes all its power really down low, thats why its such a low rever? and also why it munches so much fuel.
I dont know if its just myne thats this bad, but if it isnt, then this engine really isnt one of misti's finest if you know what I mean.

Call me dumb Ascension, but it's hard to know without checking out your car. Could it be that your tacho is pointing about 1,200 rpm lower than it should (assuming you have a 2.6 auto)?
I have a 2nd gen 2.6 auto: I drive hard (toyed with a SP23 tonight!) 90% city and get 12.2-13.1L/100km, so it's not too bad for its design and age. It does have a K&N panel, Optima battery and runs RON98, though. I have included this for your reference/comparison.
I hope others can help you shed some more light on this matter! All the best.

Id say you have a dodgy tacho. 100kph @ 1000rpm doesnt sound right lol

yeah, the thing is, its not like theres no power, it just seems like the tacho readings are really low.
Can people post what revs they sit on when doing 100 ks in their 2nd gen autos.
Thanks.
i think your tacho is not reading correct.
i have the 3L v6 auto in my TS wagon, i expect the gearbox to be the same/similar for both 2.6/3L engines (??)
anyway, from memory i think i get about 2200rpm at 100kph.
the 2.6L are famous for huge variations of economy. some get 11L/100km some get 16L or worse. i dunno why that is -try the search function on this forum to see what you come up with.
potential problems could include dodgey sensors, incorrect timing, 'slipping' gearbox, driving style, dodgey autochoke. or a combo.

yeah my v6 man
<2500rpm 100km/h
=2500rpm 110km/h
=2800rpm 120km/h
=3000rpm 130km/h

2.6 TR auto = about 2100-2300 depending on conditions.
I'd say dodgy tacho for sure, no way you'd be sitting on 1000 rpm on freeway, i can get my car to redline with pwr mode on.

well when i in town... if i have over drive on i notice a defference between revs when i accelerate then what i get if its off... like i reach a good 3000 when its off and 1500 when its on..
might just be my car. but thats a thought
does the tacho show correct revs at idle? ie about 800rpm?
if your tacho has a 50% inaccuracy -ie 1000rpm at 100kph, then it might show 400rpm in neutral.

Its efi.
At idle in P or N its bout 750, in Drive its round 500. <- from what ive read this seems to be about right.

so it has a rev limiter ay...
see if you can reach that unmistakable sound and reference it with the tacho reading :D
just make sure you warm up the car first

:stoopid:
Didn't think of that, hold the car in L and keep revving til you hit the rev limiter (you'll know when you hit it  ) and make sure you take note of what it says on the Tacho.

okai, my bad, the car sits at 1500 while doing 100ks, not 1000. 1500 is still low as all **** right?
what happens when i hit the rev limiter? it just bounces back? im scared this car is gonna fall apart if i push it hard

The revs will just shoot back down and when this happens take your foot off the accelerator :P.

when SHOULD the rev limiter kick in? much after red line?

Well mine red lines at 6k and from memory its very close to that, i'm thinking it kicks in around about 5.7 to 6.5k, cant remember exactly. It is very close to redline though.

dont hold it there for 10 seconds but 1 or 2 cant hurt it aslong as its warmed up.
i wouldnt free rev it to that rpm, its not the best things for motors without load but even then it couldnt hurt it for 1-2 seconds at the limiters
you will know the limiter, it will sound like rally anti lag BABABABABABABABABBAABAB!

haha, the limiter kicked in at 4000 on the dot.
So now to fix the faulty tacho.
Just replace the motor in the back of the dash? I'm going to have to pull the whole bloody dash out arnt it.
Or will i have to replace the whole instrument cluster?

Dunno how dodgy this is but you could try pushing the needle accross more?

Does it sound like a normal car? If so, it's an electrical issue, I'd say there might be more resistance on the tacho then normal (if that's how it works). Either way, I'd assume it's definately a problem with the electrics. Could always go rig a new 5" riceboy unit up.
