hey guys,
my wife's car is a 95 ford(mazda) laser and the fuel guage doesn't work. however the low fuel warning lamp does.
what i want to know is, do the TR/TS magna fuel guage/low fuel warning system operate independantly too? and if so which is most accurate; the needle position, or the light.

also if anyone knows how far you can go once the low fuel warning light starts turning on, that would be some handy info!

thanks

depending on how you drive your car makes a massive difference as to how long your petrol lasts... rule of thumb, light comes on fill up A.S.A.P...
having said that when the light came on in my lancer i used to get about 50k's then i'd fill up but still often had 8 or 9 litres left... stay on the safe side and fill up before or when it comes on

Well, apparently the fuel tank holds 65litres, or at least supposedly the wagons do, and when I'm getting towards the "empty" mark a fill is 45-48litres or so (never gone to the empty light), so theoretically you could have up to 20litres left.
Personally, I never want to find out.

I have the opposite problem... the fuel gauge is fine but the light is up the spout... it doesn't come on at all... ever... I have done a 63L fill in my wagon and still no light!

Can anyone help me out with how to fix it??

On another matter the only car I have ever run out of petrol in was a SAAB 9-3 convertible... and that was because the stupid trip computer said "27kms to empty"

Yes they are independant. The empty tank light works by using a thermal resistor which sits inside the tank and when covered in petrol stops the light from comming on. When the petrol drops below the resistor the empty light comes on.
If your light isnt comming on it might be the resistor needs replacing or it simply may be the light in the dash is blown which would be more likely.
And like RoGuE_StreaK the needle in my car goes to empty when ive used about 45L of petrol which is fairly typical as the rest is the reserve which you either want to use on every tank to stop crap building up or you dont want to use at all ever as craps built up already.

the needle is a more accurate indication, i get my low fuel light coming on and off all the time. I generally take the needle and then the Kilometeres ive done and how ive driven to come up with hoe much fuel ive got left. generally if you want to run as low as possible, as soon as you feel the engine stumbling at idel means you need fuel asap.
