View Full Version : Subs for better SQL?

Hey all,
As someone who's more interested in SQL than SPL, I've never really considered having subs in my car. After having decent speakers for a while though, I'm starting to reconsider. The existing setup is capable of making the inside front door trims rattle, the outside door handles rattle, and the plastic lower bootlid section vibrate like a mofo. I have a theory that maybe if I had subs, then I could direct most of the bass away from the other speakers and reduce the vibrating. Is my theory right or wrong?
For reference, my existing setup: Pioneer 5750 head unit, Boston FS60 6" splits, Boston FX93 6x9s. Front doors and rear deck have been sound deadened.

Well dude I am running the FS-60's in the front with deadening and powered by a Audison SRx2 ( 65WRMS x 2 ) and even with them HP at around 60-70Hz anything below 250Hz can make the trim vibrate... its just that the tweeters cover it up :bowrofl:
A sub will take lots of pressure off you speakers though when it comes to the sub sonic hz. I run a Boston G5 in a sealed box off an Audison SRx2s ( 600WRMS x1 ) and it is so dam accurate its not funny, I have had people ask if I was running 4x 10inch subs or something. lol It is also very very loud if need be but yeah even a single Boston G2 woofer with moderate power will help your rattles dissappear... to the rear of the car anyways.

I concur that with your current speaker setup, Boston G5's would be an excellent choice.
FHRX recently had a Sub testing day, results are on his website http://www.fhrxstudios.com/
makes for interesting reading.
Looking at his site, he has a couple of Boston Pro12.5LF-4 that are second hand that you may be interested in. I'd imagine that the previous owner had an upgrade....

Hmm, #3 for SQL and #6 for SPL..

All boston drivers have good SQ.
It's just some lean more to SQ and some lean more to SPL.
I think the G5's are great.....

Maybe they wanted something with a little more bass he he. They probably upgraded to the G5. My 12.5lf blew up twice, once from "over excursion" ha ( broke the tinsel leads ) which was my fault, and the other from a voice coil melt down which was caused by a member on here. The new G5 plays lower and harder and has a field replacable voice coil, good upgrade I think. Boston always team the 12inch G5 with the GT28 amp and the minimum that thing puts out is 700WRMS and is capable of over 1350WRMS so yeah the woofer can take a beating.
The G2 may be enough bass for you though. :D

Yeah, I'm definitely an SQL man myself. And the G5 would go nicely with my other Bostons. :)

An SQ sub... You need to look at Boston, Eclipse and of Course Focal..
for SQ a Sealed enclosure will be the better enclosure to go for...
If you are looking at just adding a little Bass then go for a sealed 10 inch, if your looking at Boosting all round performance then look at a 12 inch...
Ask S_tim_ulate as I am sure he would probably recommend a DD sub or a ID Max12...

Sure would, single 12inch G5 with a super flat response curve, 3inch excursion, blah blah all from a 1cuft sealed box :bowrofl:

Sorry to ressurect an old(ish) thread, but what's the "best" setup for subs? 1x12? 2x12? 2x10? Also, those of you who know Boston gear, what's the difference between the G2 and G5? G5s are kinda pricey...
I'm currently searching the forums for an answer but haven't found it yet.

No 'Best' setup.
In terms of SQ subs I would go IDMAX over DD anyday. (do as i say, not as i do ;))
SQL though - DD3512 isnt bad but still no match for IDMAX
RE XXX is on par with IDMAX but requires lots of power to get them moving.
In terms of 'best' setup for subs Zaphod, the best setup could be dual 15's as these would have the best low end extension. Although this also requires large midbass drivers up front 8"-9"
There is no best though. I'd recommend 1 expensive 12" over 2 cheaper 12's. Generally 12" is a good compromise between accurate bass from a 10" that can't extend as low. Compared to excellent low end extension from a 15" (20hz-40hz) that suffers from sounding too 'loose'
Only generalisations though. Many 10's will outperform 2 12's. There are no hard rules besides you get what you pay for. Until you've heard a good subwoofer setup (NEEEDS a few thousand watts on tap) and proper box construction and design, and full sound deadening, you wont realise what ur missing out on...
*Im quite far from having good bass atm imo*

Thanks Tim. At the moment I'm thinking Boston - either G2 12" or G5 12". The G5 run to about $800, so would rather buy one than two! :) As an aside, are JBL any good? I recently had th chance to buy a single JBL 15" pretty cheap.
These are some of the best SQL subs on the market today for around the $1 kilobuck mark.

And the fact that I have entry level DD's...
Still once I get my midbass correct I will move back onto subs hopefully for the last time.

Since my last post in this thread, I have heard Dee's Vibe 12" in the fibreglass sealed bos she made heself!
I've gotta tell you it sounds very good. Only really usung it for sub-bass reinforcement of the rest of the system.
Unfortunately tthis was at Mysti's place at 11pm on friday night. Would really like to get it somewhere where I could open it up quite a bit and give it some real power.
But overall, SQ was rather impressive for a $400 (I think she said) class driver.

Greetings All.
Yeah...I must admit, that sub of hers is fantastic...LOVED IT! Hahaha...
We went cruising around the streets with it going loud...sounds great...nice and clear solid bass...lol
Im still tossing up between two Blackair 12" Vibe subs or two DD 2012 subs..
Cheers,

Yeah those Blackair Vibe subs are way better than DD, they can be had under $300 these days, the series II have better handling and are a little more. The Space woofers are just so dam sexy and bloody loud.
Difference between G2 and G5:
G2 is rated at 300WRMS. Uses the same tech as in the G5 but the G5 has 3 inch excursion, field replacable voice coil and the ability to swap between SVC & DVC, compatible with the GTR passive radiators, handle a truck load more power, radavent cooling, did I mention 3 inch excursion lol .
Only problem with the IDMAX, XXX and Space is that they need 1000WRMS just to wake up  I think 1 quality 12 will suit your need nicely, if you want 2 then you could always get the G5 with a radiator.

I thought you might, just because it seems many upper end systems have a 3 way component front stage with an 8, 5/6, 1 inch set up. What brand did you end up choosing (or is it a bitsa)?
keep us updated... and keep me updated if your willing to let go of your morels (they are the morels in the front aren't they?)
I'm sub hunting at the moment, but I don't intend to buy untill I have an amp to run my current speakers first. Was thinking one good quality 12" instead of 10's...
Cheers,
Danno

All Morel still. It's the Elate 3 way with supremo tweet.
My current frontstage will be going to my mate as it's still new pretty much. Will let you know if I come across any other gear or if any sales fall through.
