I've got $1500 to spend on subs + amps. I want good quality and good sound. I want the bass to be crisp for my music which will mostly consist of alternative rock and heavier stuff. I listen to bugger all rap/techno etc, so I need a real crisp bass note, I was thinking dual 10". Also I think i'm going to need 2 amps, 1 for the subs and 1 for all my speakers. Some good advice here would be much appreciated, thanks fellas.

with that sort of coin i would get 2x 10" subs for the boot, a good amp and some 8" speakers for the doors and amp them

that will give the ultimate responce to all frequencies imo

Yeah... It's already a 14 speaker system (really only 8 REAL speakers - 2 mid-range on the parcel shelf, 2 tweeters in the dash/door, 2 6inch in the front doors, 2 6x9's in the back) I'm really after some brands and specifics here...

Okay, just a few questions first before I pass out the ideas....

$1500 is the budget for the equipment, or equipment and install plus ancilliaries?

Can you give me some more examples of the music you listen to? Like band names etc

Are you looking to do a full install, or just drop a box in and maybe the amp mounted on a plate on the side of the boot?

From the sort of $$$ you are talking, I think you may need to raise the budget slightly (only $200ish) and you would have a great system compared to a good system....

$1500 is total for installation etc.

I like bands like, Tool, APC, Soilwork, Deftones, American Head Charge, Sevendust, Muse etc...

Subs in a box I guess with the amps somewhere... haven't thought about it too much, open to suggestion there...

An extra $200ish is possible...

Autobarn has boxed 2 x 12" Pioneer subs + 500W amp for $789 ( pretty sure that's right ). Sound good and falls within your budget.

okay... here goes.

If it is $1500 complete install, I wouldn't be going for anything flash.

Just so you know - I am running 2x 12" JBL GT4-12 subs (like the avatar) in a basic DNA-brand made sealed, grey carpeted box. This fits very snugly between the suspension towers in the boot - no need for screwing or tying down. Powering these is a JL 500.1 Monoblock and it is wired in parallel configuration (2 ohm load). This amp is capable of producing 650WRMS @ 4ohms, so possibly 1200W in 2ohm mode... The whole lot cost me $800 - subs $150 each, box $120, Amp $450 (retails $1100 but $990 is common) from a fellow member on here. Already had power wiring.

It's capable, the subs have a high sensitivity, they sound ok. They are no SQ machines.

I'd be making a board that tyou screw into your car which is made of MDF, and either painting it or carpeting it to match. You then screw your amp into this board rather than directly into the car which CAN produce ground problems.....

You have a few options in speakers. You're right, Dual 10's would be nice, there are however other options.

JL (and someone else... can't remember which company, might be boston - Tim, you help me out??) sell a set of 10" subs in a box. That's right, a set... 3 x 10" subs in a box. These could be right up you alley. Very loud, but well controlled with a powerful amp.

I actually like JL.... not everyone does. I find them good for Rock, but not as good for dance.
Boston Acoustics make some awesome 10s that are also worth considering. Alpine Type_R subs are good, and would come into your price range. If you couldn't pick up 2x Alpine 10" Type-Rs and an MRD-501 amp plus a 4guage wiring kit for $1500 i'd be very suprised! You could also go for the Type_S, they are cheaper but less power handling.

The other possibility is a 12" sub with very lightweight cone. 12"s are still very punchy, and give a nice amount of rumble too. You'd be looking at Vibe or Focal in a single 12, and spending.

As for what amp.. Tim and Magnat will suggest...

Damn with 1500 why settle for 10's ???
You listen to Rock... That makes things a tad hard as you want the Bass to kick Hard yet most of the Rock Bands you have mentioned have great Bass lines...
If it was me, I would forget the Crisp Punch Bass and leave that to the 6x9's and go and get Two 12 inch Subs in a Ported enclosure...

I would look at Getting a VIBE SPACE Custom Ported enclosure.. Should be able to be attained for around the $1000 mark
Seen Here...http://www.vibeaudio.co.uk/index.asp?page=p-spacetwinenc.html&header=p-spacetwinenc-h.html The CBR-S12 Twin would be my choice...
* Checked FHRX website for price and it is $1,024.67

For the Ultimate Bass in 10's the AC 10 Twin 10 inch would be Ideal but not sure on Price

http://www.vibeaudio.co.uk/index.asp?page=p-actwin.html&header=p-actwin-h.html This alone would Cost $1500+

To keep it all in the Budget I would go with just a Simple Jaycar Monoblock...

As you can see I am more a Bass head then an SQ Freak...
Hence the reason why I go for Large enclosures and Big subs... Tim will be able to attack the SQ side of things

For my money I'd pay Marty at http://www.fhrxstudios.com a visit. I spent $1500ish with him a while back and picked up an Audison 3 channel amp, Boston FS-60 splits and a Diamond M320 sub, along with enough sound deadening for the front doors and all the necessary wiring and fuses.

I'm not saying you should go for that kit, but tell Marty what you like and what your budget is and he'll fix you up with speakers that'll do your favourite bands justice.

Damn. sound like a walking advertisement lol

At least you speak the Truth, Marty would be the Ideal person to see.. He would be able to recommend something that will not only suite your budget but Blow your Doors off at the same time and give you a Discount if you mention you are an AMC member....
