Hi, I'm a newby (formerly of Evolution.net Lancer forums) & I'm looking to buying a 2000 VRX Magna. It has 18"x8 wheels fitted, but can anyone tell me the stock width of rims & tires? (or point me to somewhere I can find it) I'm hopeing they are 16x7, but I'm not sure.
Only need to know so I can decide what to tell my insurer.. wheel width was the only thing they quized me on... go figure.
Thanks
PS. Also, whats average price for such a car with 77000Kms?

good guess.. it was NRMA..
Every site I've found says they're 16" on the 2000, but none say either tire or rim width. If it turns out they are less then 7 wide, I'll have to tell them the new ones are 7.5.

Hi, the 200 VRX had 16x7 inch wheels and216/60/16 tyres on it.
The change to 17 inch was 2001 I think

Don't sound happy yet. I'm pretty sure NRMA won't allow a width change greater than the stock width.

NRMA allows 1.3 times the width of the stock I believe. So a 15x5 can have 17x6.5 but not 17x7.

So, if a steel rim is 15x7 then you can go to 17x9?

Correct, try finding stock 15x7's on a factory car though :p

Rude, they told me I couldn't even go to 7.5's. Why do they tell people different stories?

It's a Dec 2000 model which had the original 16" grey rims (well the spare is anyway) but now wears 18x8 Chrome mags.
Purchasing for $20200

Hey dude...
From what RACV told me about putting different wheels on it:
(1) Diameter cannot be more than 2" larger than the diameter of the original factory rim fitted.
(2) Wheel width cannot be greater than 7 inches.
Hope this helps!

NRMA is 100% no ifs buts maybes...
6.5" width MAX!!!! on TN-TP
7" width MAX!!!! on TR+
Height can be ANY! ie you can have 14" upto 23" in Diameter.
This will be the same for NRMA and RACV as they are both underwritten by the same company.

Also you should check your respective motor registry's conditions.
In NSW it's no more than 2 inches higher and 1 inch wider before it needs to be engineered.
Here is a link to the NSW regulations:

No worries :) Just that I remember I've seen an insurance co. cover something that was deemed illegal in the RTA lol.
Edit: Not cover, but allow a mod that wasnt allowed by the RTA

Goddamn sh*t pisslin' PIG F*%KERS!
I rang NRMA and their excuse was about aqua planing! According to them, an 8" rim with 235 tires will aqua plane more then a 7" rim with the same tire! He dribbled something about 'agreed ratios' & weight of car, and all sorts of SH*T!
What a bunch of ludicrous Wankers!
Anyone know another good priced insurer? I'm nearly 21, & NRMA quoted under $900... the next best price I've found was over $1400.
Also do wheels bigger then 17" even come in 7" wide? I'm seen 7.5 in 18s, but never 7.
CRAP!

It's true though, wider tyres are more prone to that.
But I dont see why we shouldn't be allowed to have wider than 7"...at LEAST 7.5"

Just thought I'd add my bit with my insurer (soon to be ex :D)
AAMI (We allow nearly no mods bastards) only asked me if my rims were legal when I put them on & of course they are :p
& that was the end of that.

In response to Killbilly, unfortunatly insurers have these idoits they thing are engineers, they state that the wheel will be unsafe on the cars components of over a certain width, this and also risk of having the wheels or the entire car stolen and lack of traction on the wet because the car was made to handle with a particular rim on them.
We know in most cases, especially going to say 7.5 is a load of crud however they are basically talking computers ie rubbish in rubbish out
