Hey PPl,
I'm a newbee... Got a Magna Altera TE/TK 96 with about 190Kms always serviced.
Took is out of the garage today where is had the complete job... Trany Service, Timing belt, water pump, sparks, leeds, plug tube seals, ignition leads, distributeror... blah blah.. cost about $2K.
just driving to work this afternoon it jerked jump, skid, and went into limp mode (N flashing). Turn it off, back on, and it locked the wheels.
Before it went into the garage, the trany was very jerky in slow accelaration and thumpy in braking. But I never thought it would fail. It was like that since 4 years ago when I bought it... and I kept fixing different things hoping it wasn't the trany... no mechanic was telling me its the trany, but I always suspected.. one said its the ign leads, another the throttle body, another the oil leak in the plugs... but all that is fixed now and the trany gave up imediatly after.
All those faults could have kept is working :) but now its dead.
I have a few quetions and any help is greatly apprecaited...
I this a comon failure on the Magnas? From just reading around it would seem like it at about 150k, seem lucky that I got 190kms out of mine then .
Who makes cars with a trany that only lasts 150k!!!
Would any of the repair had anything to do with it? could my mechanic have forgotten to do something or stuffed up something?
Where is the best place to get a new trany in Sydney? Whats a good price?
Thanks!!!!!

Sorry to hear it Frooti, it could be the Computer responsible for the Gear box, you said Neutral flashed ??
I have never incured the problem you are having as I have a Manual...
Stay tuned one of the More Advanced Auto owners may have a better diagnosis.

before today when you braked did the revs drop and stall the car or jump forward when the revs kicked back up? could be the internal clutch in the auto tranny sticking. I had the same thing on the TE and replaced the tranny under wearranty before it jammed.

yeah sounds like the same problem mine had, and it was up for a new tranny, now i bought my car at 100k and it was a deceased estate, i drove it untill 120,000kms when the gearbox died. i took it in got it replaced but when the guy took it out he said it wasnt a standerd gearbox, meaning somewhere along the line between 0 and 100,000 the gearbox was replaced, then i replaced it again at 120,000. a breif description from the autotranny mechanic said. the gearbox is all alluminium, so bit slowly wear off, they then float around in the gearbox and wearmore bitts off, so in a sence the gearbox is blending itself to peices.
I got it replaced at A Class Automatics In Lemko Plc Near Peachtree rd in Penrith. $2050total cost, and i had it back in 2 days.

Hmm no idea yet, just changed my Auto transmission oil few days ago. I have 171000kms on my odo, it seems to be working fine with mine, (touch wood). Frankly After doing my ATF change, I think is better to change every 50000 rather tha 100000kms, as I would really see dark red fluid when I flush the ATF crank case. and its not really a that expensive thing to do.
As for your options, get some mechanic to do it for you using a 2nd hand one or do it for mitsubishi dealers.

i have 160 000 on my TH with mods (190kw at flywheel) and i drive it hard and the tranny has had no problems, i suppose some last and some dont. I have heard of ppl getting more than 250 000 out of it before it goes as well

Hey mate, i'm not much of a mechanic....but i do know that when neutral flashes in the 3rd gen magna it means that the Auto Transmission Fluid needs replacement, hence why your ride might be feeling a little jerky from time to time.
How i know this??....well lets just say i got bored one day and decided to read the mitsu manual that comes with the car :P
Hope it all goes well for ya. :)
My car (97' TE) has done 94,000 kms....another 6k kms and i gotta send her for her first MAJOR MAJOR service...keeping my fingers crossed nothing goes wrong

Mine has 312000 ks on it and it only started playing up when I swapped the engine, Try setting the selector cable first, hope it works, it did for me, then maybe try spending money on fluid changes!

Hey ppls, thanks for all the replies.
Yeah, it was always jerky on accelaration and barking. I bought it second hand from the dealer 5 years back.
The interesting thing is that it died staight after I had the AT serviced????? any ideas.
The fluid was always clean and at max. I thought I should replace it because the car was jerky.
I'm also thinking about a conversion to manual?
Cuz I spoke to a Magna Transmission expert in Marrickvile and he said that its a common problem because of the computer. So if get a rebuilt tranny I should really also replace the computer which he said would cost about $1k. That would total aprox. $3.3k for the complete job.
So, is a manual conversion a good idea?
And, is the tranny really died? Anything I can try to get it going for the time being?
Thanks!!

Good idea or not, how much is that going to cost ya?
That is also interesting, can it be done? that means you also have to change the transmission crankcase? and transmission fluid again...hmm not sure its a great idea. ask around if I were you, not sure you really need to replace the cpu.

First find out what fluid they put in the tranny. If it is Dexron, that could be the prob.
Ask Mitsubishi dealers to check out the tranny 4 u. 1 hours work and they should be able to tell whats wrong. If you can find a good tranny workshop they should be able to tell you whats wrong. Unlikely it is the TCU (TRANNY CONTROL UNIT).You can download any fault codes, if there are any from the TCU.

good advice. Heard about Dexron ATF. not recommended.

Before you spend big, i would seriously go and buy a container of mitsibishi fluid, then see how you go. Other than the jerking, if its happening when you turn, your diff could be shot. Everywhere else, the tranny could be in trouble big time.
By the way, who is this "magna transmission expert"
Im intrested, im on my 3rd auto tranny now, and about to sell up for a manual
