I have recently gotten a basically stock '97 TF 3.0L. The midas report it came with says there is a small hole in the "middle" muffler. do magna's have two mufflers, or does this mean theres a hole in the middle of the muffler?

that's sort of besides the point, i want a new muffler! i haven't got much cash at the moment, so keep that in mind. i only want to replace the muffler for now, but i'm not sure which one to get. i'm looking for something that will give me the extra kWs, with a nice sound, but not too loud or droney if possible. how much would this set me back?

thanks!

Contact Dave @ www.rpw.com.au

I got a new Lukey High Flow 2.5 for my beast cost $175.00 with freight (Stainless steel)
needs to be welded on etc so that's going to cost you 2.5 hours labour say another $130.00

as for the hole in the middle muffler...magnas usually have two (or is stock three) mufflers...the rear one behind the rear bar...and one in the mid section (others call this one a hotdog) so you may need the mid section replaced as well..."or from the cat-back"

2 mufflers a cat and a flex piece iirc

just have the mid muffler replaced with pipe or a resonator of the same size, dont pay more than 120 all up.

If you want a bolt on ....10 minutes.

If you have to cut and fit 2.5 .....works out the same in the end.

some newer cars have a hole in the muffler as standard to let moisture drain....stops rust.....get another mechanic to check it out

Is it possible to do the job myself? Is welding required or can some mufflers just bolt on? If i bought say a Lukey Ultra Flow 2.5", could i put it on myself onto my stock exhaust system? If i can't, approximately how much would this be?

For our "armless" critics - there are many types of mufflers out there .... if you buy a cheap bolt on then you often get what you paid for.

I went for a premium Lukey in stainless steel. Recommended from a performance works outfit (rpw.com.au) get guaranteed performance with a very high flow rate...it takes some welding etc but that's the price you pay. Muffler plus fitting cost $350.00

Other muffler places offered me a variety of different exhausts....most were around $260 - 280 bolt on....done in 10 minutes cost $60.00 to fit - Total $340.00

It's a toss up but I preferred having a brand name I could trust with warranty and the famous Lukey Growl. :P

Not necessarily. I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) that both lukey and redback offer bolt on mufflers that should provide similar, if not identical performance gains compared to a muffler that has been welded on.

As for my advice… shop around. There is bound to be some exhaust shops around your area. Tell them what you are after, and they should provide you with some decent suggestions. And just for reference, I got a high flow muffler, chrome dump tip, my resonators removed and all fitting done for $230 (heres a link (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15692) to a some pics and info about my exhaust)

well i just got a peice of stainless that goes onto the exhaust wher the muffler is ment to start and then i bolted it on and now i have the worlds loudest magna, ive got a full 2.5" system with the hotdog and the whole kit and kaboodle and without a muffler she makes a bit of noise. its worth a try especially if u hate ur whole neighbourhood

I too had a hole in the middle muffler (also known as resonator). 'tis common. I also had a hole in the main muffler from a stone strike from taking a lowered vehicle on 4WD tracks :)

2nd hand VRX muffler cost me $50
Then fitting plus new resonator (a higher flowing one) plus 2.5" cat back replacment piping (press bends) all up came to $290.

And if I might say so myself, it sounds marvelous :)

I did just that shop around.... plus I did a bit of
research...http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0383&P=1

I also asked the guys at www.rpw.com.au high flow mufflers are not the same the most important thing to me was the balance between noise suppression and flow rate

So two recommendations for the Lukey...autospeed and rpw.

Other members are obviously after different things....
