I f****ed up and dont know what to do. just changed the auto tranny fluid and filter but i started to do up the oil pan bolts when i had finished doing the job. now the manual says 12nm i set my torque wrench to 10 nm and sarted to tighten , was waiting for the wrench to click but instead the bolt snapped :tantrum: :swearing: leaving me with half a bolt in the hand and half a bolt in the tranny.
anyone had this problem and or know of a solution , pls any advice would be great

how many bolts in the auto pan? i havnt done the flush myself, have you started it to see if it seals?

there is about 12 bolts all around the pan yeah?

if only 2 are broken you might get away with it, but i wouldnt suggest it.

your going to need a small easy-out and the right size drill bit.

sux when that happens ay

12 bolts, just the 1 snapped, and no havent filled up the tranny to see if it seals.didnt want to if i could fix the bolt first,so not to spray tranny fluid everywhere. i do have a tap and die set but

ive dethreaded a couple of bolts underneath the car :S not good at all, but there is plenty of support there (so i tell myself), but i still got frowned on by my mechanic. Ah well. Also I'm not sure how to use those easy out type things, i had a reverse thread screw bit, but when i used it (on another thing) to get a broken bolt it snapped the reverse thing in half! Perhaps i used the wrong size

Turbo_Charade is spot on, you need an easy out and the right size drill. If you do it right the thread will be fine.
If youre not that flash with tools get someone else to do it for you or you'll jest get in deeper. :hand:
It should seal OK with 1 bolt missing but dont just forget about it, get her fixed.

It looks a bit like a tapered drill bit wilh the turns going backwards (left hand thread). The idea is you drill a pilot hole in the broken bolt and fit the easy out in the hole. Then as you try to undo the bolt with the easy out the tapered LH thread bites into the hole and undoes the bolt.

Supacheap (or is it supercheap), bunnings or any decent size hardware shop should have them. Take in an unbroken bolt or the head of the one you broke and they should be able to sell you the easy out and drill you need. Should only cost a few bucks each. Make sure you drill your hole as close to centre as you can. If you can, file the broken end as flat as ya can to stop the drill wandering.

just make sure the set has a m4 size bit as those pan bolts are tiny..

for further reference, you shouldnt use anything with big leverage on small bolts, just nip them all up wrist tight and make sure you do every bolt 3 times round and you will be right :D

Great news. Last time I had a similar problem (engine sump) easy outs didnt work - it was jammed that tight the easy outs broke!

Try using a welder, mig best put drops of weld on broken stud then weld washer on the weld and on that, a bolt or nut also the heat seems free things up
