ok so why does my car use more petrol on a straight stretch of road at 115kph in 5th than it does flying thru the hills in mostly 2nd gear at 80kph?

its a tj 03 vrx and uses more on the highway than my 97 verada but in the hills has great economy.... any ideas?

does it mean its running rich at low revs like 3000 in 5th?
the wind wasnt affecting it cos it happened on the way to whyalla and on the way back with different wind conditions.

cheers
chris

because its a straight road, even pressure on accelerator etc, it drops teh gauge evenly

mine does the same thing

in the hills, it appears your not using SFA, BUT your fuel gauge will drop heaps once your driving sanely again :D

so im just stuck with homo fuel economy?

or should i drive everywhere in 2nd? :P

lol yeah... that would work well

dont watch teh gauge, look at the ECU fuel economy... you will notice it then.. analogue gauges are infamous for innaccuracy

mine says im using 10.8lts per 100kms no matter how i drive. not accurate either

thats your average... probably reasonably accurate :D

have a look at your instant fuel readouts, that will give you the best reading

under load, will be about 44-50Lp100, but when your cruising home down main north, will prolly be around 7-9Lp100

nah thats the instant fuel readout. 10.8 and the average is the same

My guess its to a certain speed on a straight road is considered fuel economy. Travelling fast does not mean you eat fuel less. Its kind of fuel ratio, and you were hoping that the theory was that faster I go the more ground you cover which is not exactly the case.
Fuel economy speeds are at 60-80 kmh as indicated when travelling faster maybe at just 110 or 100 you could see a difference? As the revs are higher at higher speeds its normally eating more fuel than expected if especially at short distances where you travel 100kmh.

Well i went away for the weekend and i did 821kms on one tank of fuel and still had some petrol left. :D
Averaged 8.2lts per 100kms (by the trip computer) cruising at 115km/h on cruise control with the aircon on as well as a bit of town cruising around. So i cant complain about my fuel consumption. :P

What petrol are you using, and typr of Engine oil etc....

I have to use ultimate 98 or equivalant 98octane fuel cos of my 10.1 compression and aggressive ECU tune/program.
I use fully synthetic shell helix or mobil 1, 5w-40 oil.
But even when my car was brand new and stock as a rock i got really good economy.

do you reset the average fuel economy thing very often?

Do you do a reset of the average fuel reading, after filling a tank? I think with the TJ's from Series II on... you have to do a hard reset of avg fuel, not just the kilometers travelled. On my TH, you basically held your finger down on the reset for about 3 secs and it reset everything.

On my TJ.. I have to reset the trip meter, the avg fuel separately. :)

So, your average fuel reading will not change that much if you never reset it. The longer you leave it, the less the avg figure will change after you hammer the car (in 2nd gear/ 80ks) and/or cruise for 600k's on the hwy.

Doh!... I see RJL is asking the same question.

i held down the button to reset it. but the instant fuel reading is 10.8 all the time too, not just avg fuel.
i used normal unleaded on the way there and then tried premium on the way back and it was the same result.... exact same fuel consumtion

Hey Chris if your instantenous is reading 10.8l all the time then it is not working properly it should rise and fall as you accelerate and decellerate and show just dashes when you come to a standstill at the lights.Mine works ok but i do get better fuel economy on a straight steady drive than i do through the hills.Sounds like something is up the sh!t !!! :D

P.S as others have said if you dont reset your average when you fill up ,it wont vary much.Your avg that is!! :D

it does the dashes on idle, but the rest of the time it reads 10.8 with an exception of once it went on 9.2 for about 5seconds
