After last week's debacle with my car on the hills, I've bitten the bullet and am looking for some new tyres since 6 year old Goodyear touring tyres are really dangerous on a bendy road.

Currently I am eyeing on a set of Bridgestone Grid III's. Anyone have had any experience with them on a Magna?

I'm looking for a performance oriented tyre with good wet weather traction since it will be my daily driver. I'm not worried about tyre noise, my NVH levels since upgrading the suspension has already gone sky high, I can't see how tyre noise will make it any worse (Thinking about changing springs to ones with a lesser spring rate even).

A while back I was looking at the Falken ST-115's but after seeing the thread design in real life, I really didn't feel safe at all driving in the wet.

There are Plenty of Tyres that will do the job, either the same or better then the GIII's for the price you are about to pay !

Have a look at some Hankook K104's.

i reccomend them personally.

Apart from all the legal aspects, I have 235/45/17 Toyo TPGs and very happy with them. On the wet, on higher speeds tend to slide a bit, but that's to be expected from a 235 being so wide. I had same size Falken A 26 (?) before, and I reckon these are tad better.
So, what happened at the hills....?
I honestly cannot believe that only ( :bowrofl: ) 6 yr old tyres could be rock hard, totally lacking any sort of grip :bowrofl:
Ahm, sorry.

TecoDaN, the grid III comes std with AWD's I can't wait to wear them out and change them.

They are very noisy tyres ... and they humm all sorts of tunes. I've done 25000 km on them and they are 1/2 worn - that's pretty quick for me as my tyres normally go to 100,000km.
Grip is good, that's all about what thats going for them.

Legally, after 5 years tyres cannot be sold on a 2nd hand car irrespective of the amount of tyre tread on them. I presume this applies to not keeping tyres for longer than that on any car.

l went with the grid III about 4 months ago.... had a little trouble b 4 them as the guys fitted sumotomos first.. But after research found that insurance wouldnt cover me due to the decrease in load rate but with no tyres and 200km from home had to go the gird III. If l had more time to shop l wouldve gone another option.

Ahh yeah, silly me I should have use the Search facility. I even had the same title as yours, do'h. But I'm looking for a performance tyre, you're looking for a long lasting tyre :D

The tyres I am replacing didn't actually come with the car, I bought the rims with rubber 2 years ago for my old car and have replaced two of them with cheapy Toyo stuff, but two still have the OEM rubber (rear tyres), and have recently swapped it over to my 3rd gen.

The F1 GS-D3's were in my book, but they don't have a size I want. Need 215/60/16's or 215/55/16's since the rims can only take a max 215 width and I want to stay legal.

Also have heard good stories on the Yokohama A539's

Any particular reason why you don't like them? Grip/traction problems or just noisy?

i highly recommend the Hankook Ventus Sport K104..... wear quite well, and great performance, decent price too...... around about $300 per, but that was for 19"

dont even think about Nankang Sport (i've got them on my car now - i hate them) terrible tyres.

I've also used Kumho Ecsta Supra's..... not too bad, but could be grippier..... cheapish tyre.

just seem noisier than even the sumotomos and a little harder ride.. and seeing that the sumos are about half the price it tells me there must be some smoother tyres for the price of grid III . As for traction cant fault them. stick in all weather

Highly recommend Hankook Ventus sport K104. Gr8 wet grip, gr8 gry grip, low noise, very sticky , but if driven hard they wont last over 30,000 k's.
Have tried Hankooks other tyre(Kingstar 106) and found them to be hard wearing but they dont hold the road well ( I lost it 3 times now since using Kingstar's).
Ventus 104 in 245/40/18 are about $245 each

thanks for the comments guys. Looks like i'll be doing a bit more research, so many tyres out there.

Those who have AWD's, I thought they come standard with Grid II's not the newer Grid III's, last I checked were on the TL AWD range.

Actually Bridgestone are trying to get rid of the Grid II tyre range, its so very tempting because its as cheap as chips at the moment, well for the size I want. But I'll definitely be searching on the other stuff mentioned.

Bridgestone Pontenza G3s keep getting rated as the best wet weather touring tyre around.

TecoDan is right, the AWD Magna came with the lesser GII's not the GIII's.

I have a TH Sports with 215/60/16 tyres and recently put on new Bridgestone GIII's, replacing GII's.

I have been very pleased with the new tyres, there is a really noticeable difference. The GIII's are a bigger leap in improvement over the GII's than the GII's were over the Turanza ER30's that came standard.

Noise levels are not much, if any, worse than with the GII's but grip is much improved, especially in the wet. Wet weather traction when making a fast start at the lights is vastly improved - i can now actually use more than half throttle.

Don't be tempted by the discounted prices on the discontinued GII's, the little extra money for the GIII's will be the best money you have spent on the car yet!

the yokohama A539's are an excellent tyre, as i have them on my sports atm, but if anything, they wear a little quickly for my liking (they are a soft compound tyre)

excellent wet whether grip, but alas, they dont make them any more.

the replacement is a tyre called the C-Drive - these are as good, if not better than the 539. tread pattern is different, but no where near as noise, and offer just as much grip in the wet, and slightly more in teh dry.

i recommend that you add these tyres to your list.

Strange, my AWD came with GIII. Definitely confirm about the noice. it's driving me mad.

Very strange - the Grid II was definitely the factory tyre for both TJ & TL AWD's, not the Potenza GIII

I had GII's on my AWD. Awfully noisy.
Changed to 17" rims and Falken Avensis.
They have the correct load rating.

Much quieter and even more grip.

4 tyres cost $800 as part of a wheel and tyre deal in Sydney.
