I'd be worried if a 2.6 didnt rattle when it first started.
When it gets too bad theres a little cover plate on the timing cover. (Thats on the opposite end of the block to the water pump.)
Its held by 2 small bolts. You take that off (with the engine turned off) and under it will be a metal pin poking out and a bolt. You loosen the bolt and press the pin down with your finger (not a screwdriver etc). While your holding it down you tighten the bolt back up. Put a bit of silastic on the gasket and replace the cover. Careful its bolted into alloy so you dont put a heap of torque on the cover bolts, just firm is fine.

yer its not a worrying sound for now but if it gets louder ill do that, thanks for the advive :D
There are two chains in there, the one your hearing is the timing chain rattle, and that is normal to hear at start up while the oil pressure rises to tension up the timing chain. if the rattle remains after start up, it either means the tensioner has worn down, requiring you to replace the chains and guides, or the balence chain guide needs adjustment, if on adjusting it you find it wont go any further, your either pushing the wrong way, or the guide has worn down to metal, and thus the chains and guides also need to be replaced. The balence chain sound is a little diffrent from the timing chain sound in that it sounds more like someone battering the bottom of a saucepan with a wooden spoon when it wears down to metal.

you will find its not your timing chain but your balance chain is streched & the guides are worn i didnt think mine was bad but when they changed it the machanic remove the chain without touching the tensioners thats how loose it was, no rattle now at all with low oil presure on start up its soo nice

I am thinking of leaving the balance shafts out of my new engine as I am sick of damn balance shaft chain rattles. I just dont know how it would go in a Magna.

Give us a yell on how that goes, I'm building up the block in my avatar and I'm not sure which way to go with those balance shafts. I've seen kits for $40

I have that block's brother. Bought it off of eBay :)
Rob @ Ringwood Auto Parts says he can do a BSEK for $25.00. I dont know if that includes the blocks that go in where the balance shafts go.

Now all I need is a head (leave it alone you guys) lol
Funny you should mention Rob, he has an Ebay site that I found last nite. ("ringwood auto parts" as well) good prices.
I watched 2 guys bidding on a timing chain set (no brand name, no gears) and they went to $170 including post. :bowrofl: :bowrofl: Rods price for "ACL brand" same set $79 +post

Actually, it could be one of three (or maybe only two) things, seeing as the sound subsides soon after starting.
The timing chain employs an hydraulic tensioner, IIRC. These need to prime. If the balance chains are set up the same (hydraulic tensioners), then same rule applies.
Also, the tappetts (at least in our TP) are hydraulic. These also need to prime (and are more likely to be dry, and thus noisier, during your first start of the day).
We had the same noise. Fixed it with the correct oil - in this instance, Penrite HPR15 semi synthetic (as engine has done 150,000km) ;-)

I shoulda made it clearer - it's not changing the oil that fixed it, but using the *correct* oil. The last oil change we did failed to rectify the problem. This time, we used the *correct* oil, and the noise hasn't surfaced since :-)
